    Don't worry about video length. Bell hopper goes for 6-8 hours at a time lol. That was one of the best explanations I've heard yet from anyone about transfers and porting. Note if you could just reach us how to crunch numbers on then to get the degrees needed for it to run with all the beans that would be awesome.

    The key to the primary angle on the exhaust side like our man here was saying….. IT’S ALL ABOUT CYLINDER FILL!!! that’s why I also use a flow bench/smoke
    You are a great critical thinker! You have to be able to see it in your mind like it’s a cad or blueprint.
    You are a great mind!
    I live in SW Virginia right on there line with Kingsport TN. I’m the only person for 200 miles with a snowmobile. Grabbed it to swap the engine into a Shifter Kart!
    The bikes have range like a mothuh! Also the power valve is huge for hp!

    an important thing in tuning two strokes as well as four stroke that lot of people do wrong is knife edging transfers and other parts of the engine.
    air dont want to flow round sharp bends and sharp edges, look at an airplane wing it dont got the sharp edge twards the incoming air.

    This is the best thing about videoing yourself, it's a year later. I'm back to watch it again for the 10th time. You thought Tinman quite well I'd say it's pretty apparent he took alot of goodies from you. And I'm gonna tell ya what. Between the 2 of you It won't be long and I'll be able to build a tinhorse saw. Or would it be an ironman saw . Im probably exaggerating a lot, but seriously you have thought me a lot. Thank you

    That's not doing horrible things Harvey, you can do some crazy things with those ;). I raced a 600 in ice ovals and did some very naughty things to those engines. Should have seen the naughty things I did to a yamaha 292gp cylinder to get it to fit a kawasaki 292 crankcase lol it was a nasty engine ;). Love ya Ironhorse👍

    I use to use full synthetic Klotz KL300 but the smell just got to me. I use VP full synthetic oil now. $8 at TSC. It is JASO FD rated. I also recommend any full synthetic for a Dirt Bike at 50:1. Stay away from most TCW rated oils for boat motors, they have more detergents and are meant for lower RPM engines to keep them clean. Polaris had lots of problems years ago with trying to use one oil for everything. I also add 1oz of Motorkote to my gallon of 2 cycle mix. I have never had a engine failure.

    I'm from Montana. I've been running sleds for 37 years and I've had some wild ones. 2 cylinders will run 10k. I've had a couple 3 cylinders running 195-200+hp (760-809cc) that'll turn 9200. That's my experience. And the 3 cylinders are the king

    Idk man, too much compression will eventually hold back rpms. Moderate comp and loose squish has been a reliable setup for many, many dirt bikes. Also, just saw a set of crankcases with long trenches leading to the bearing oil holes. Next time I put a rod kit in my 500, I think I’ll add some trenches/catch basins leading to the oil holes.

  • @jczaher

    XLT motor! 8000 rpm stocker. Could run up to 9500-10500 with a set of pipes ( decker, slp, aaen ) and your porting. 12,500 and your probably cooking the bearings, and the rings might not hold up without the 4 line mikuni oil pump from the later model. Bought some parts to put one of these together, just haven't had the time or money.
    www.wheatfarm.com/snowmobile/ used to have some good info on these motors if you can find it
    And thank you for doing what your doing showing us guys how to do things the right way. I've been waiting to see someone do this. can't wait to see it done and spanking everybody on the lake ; )

    Been digging through your videos. I have never done port work. Our port guy left the shop so im learning. Wish id have paid more attention but nobody has ever explained how to decide what kinda port timing you want. Do you have a video showing how to find target port timing? I seen alot about how to change it which i grasp that concept but not how to map out a target port timing.

    • @johnw5242
      @johnw5242 Před 2 lety

      I hope your shop is not only thriving, but also always in a position to take on more work.
      I knkw it's been a coue years since you commented here, but so much the better, really, because, at days end, people generally do give a hoot how our friends, includimg the one's we've never met before, are doing. So, how are things? Have you started working on a "Junk Saw Pile" to hone some porting skills of your own?
      If you already have just about ANY rotary tool and a few deceent burrs, all you need to add to that is a degree wheel, some JB Weld (warning: The "fast set" is NOT what you want for this type of work), and a willingness to only work on this aspect of "mechanicing" when your head is clear, and your not feeling rushed in ANY way.
      There are often WAY more people in the community pulling for us than we even know. Think about THAT!

    So from what I gather on a snowmobile you don't want your squish any tighter than 60 thou. Ha an xlt, not a super heavily built motor, but I am excited to see this engine build. One thing about xlt's is there are alot of them around and there cheap. Stock they will run probably around 8000 rpm. They will rev more but you want to set your clutches up so you are running around 8000 or a little better. hah 1200 rpms!! Man I want to see this thing RIP!! Hah yes I ive spent alot of time and effort rebuilding snowmobile engines in my days, You are right they are made of glass. I am working on a long track 680 ultra now with triple psi pipes it is going to be sweet!

    I dont understand the difference between the cylinders with transfer walls and the ones that are open into the bore for their whole length. Ive added jbweld to the exhaust sides of my cylinders' transfers to increase the angle towards the intake side and increase velocity,( it has worked great!) but I'm not sure how to translate that to the new ones I e been getting where the transfers are all open with a divider down the length.

    • @frankcrawford416
      @frankcrawford416 Před 3 lety

      Having open walls probably cheaper to make and probably allow more flow instead of having a wall take up some of the runner volume the Piston acts as the wall so it probably works just as good as standard ones you find in motorcycles that have a completely closed wall. That's just my guess I've only ported a Yamaha 400 once. another thing I just thought of in order to have the same size tunnels with a closed cylinder wall they would have to make the cylinder wider thus the whole package of the saw being wider..the rear wall of the cylinder really takes the thrust load from the Piston so having the side walls open probably does not affect piston as far as rocking and other things obviously
