    I spent many weekends while in college exploring the Wichitas. Now both of my sons spend their college weekends exploring those same mountains. Thank you for this video.

      That's awesome! I do miss the Wichita Mountains. It will always hold a special place in my heart because that's where my love for backpacking and hiking was born.

      It's a pretty cool place! The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge has more to offer that the video shows and you can stop in Meers for a great burger when you're done.

    I haven't been there in so long. I had forgotten how beautiful it is.

      I used to go about twice a year, but I moved to Michigan and haven't been down there in a couple years. I do miss it.

      One of my favorites, too. I've been going there once or twice a year since a hiking and backpacking class trip at OSU in 2001.

    Where did you camp and did you need to get a permit?

    • @scottpope9105
      @scottpope9105  Před 2 lety

      I camped at Doris Campground on this trip. I have camped in the backcountry with a permit before, but this time it was at the developed campground.

    Looks so much drier than the Arbuckle mountains just East of there

      There are lakes and creeks, but in the middle of the summer all the granite makes things pretty warm and dry. Only a couple small waterfalls, nothing like Turner Falls!

    Were you using a backcountry permit, or were you camping at a fortified camping pad?

    • @scottpope9105
      @scottpope9105  Před 5 lety +1

      I was camping at Doris Campground and the sites there do have a pad along with a picnic table and a grill. There are some cool spots in the backcountry where I have camped in the past (with a permit, of course), but this time I was just at Doris Campground.

      @drright10 That is unfortunate. I just looked at the Refuge website and it says you can make reservations online, but I guess that's only for RV's. You can still backpack into the Charon's Garden Wilderness Area, though. I have moved to Michigan since I made this video, but I do miss the Wichita's.
