  • S3 Archery - Shooting Tip: "The Crouch"
Joe from S3 Archery goes over one of the most asked about components of Joe's shot sequence - the crouch before Joe starts his draw.
Joe discusses the advantages of "the crouch":
    - Concentration
    - Shot Process Consistency
    - Spine Angle Consistency
    - Balance
    - Shoulder Consistency

I like having a little bit of a crouch in my stance when I shoot, but I have also noticed that I like to have a little bit if a forward lean towards the target. This really helps me focus in on the target just that much more.

Thanks a lot for the video Joe.
I think your next on shoud be a series about proper shot sequence, going through all of the steps in detail, from concentration to follow through.
BTW, I think concentration is a bit overlooked. anyone just say "focus on one spot" but how do I focus correctly?

I have much less of a couch than joe does but find that the type of shooting I do it helps. I am all instinctive and stumping/hunting is my preferred end-game playground. I like the idea of feelings able to shoot most things in my comfort zone without knowing any distance and without having to position my body in a target archery stance. Every archer needs to do a little soul searching and decide how they want put arrows down range and at what distance. Some techniques make you more Accurate in ideal conditions but I rarely find myself there. Mine is often crouched over in too small of a blind with too big of a bow :)

Excellent tips Joe. I'd like to interview you for an episode of a weekly Traditional Archery podcast that I do. My idea for the show would be to talk with you about S3 Archery, how you started shooting Traditional and what the S3 Archery channel is all about. Also I would like to discuss maybe a few of the educational tips you discuss in this video. Hopefully we could bring some added exposure to the S3 Archery channel and Twitter page by doing the interview. Thank Joe, let me know !

Hey if it works for cats then it’ll work for us. We hunt the best when we do it like the mountain lion hunts deer or other prey. The arrow launch is same as the cat’s dash to the unsuspecting prey animal, the closer the better.

i will try it , worried for those long shoots where i have to lean back to reach 40 or 50 mts…..

Basically it is somewhat of the 'Olympic Style' but with offered relief in the waist and knees to accommodate terrain... correct? But why do I see so many guys with these extreme cants to the bow? I feel more solid with the crouch myself but I have never been comfortable with a cant.

Nuttn Much Nuttn - This is correct. By bending at the waist, it allows perfect form (Olympic style, with minimal/no torque in the wrist or string hand), but still achieve a level of cant, which eliminates the need of judging lefts/rights from various distances.

Sorry , I dont buy the crouch. I find using form techniques I learned when being coached on Olympic Recurve give me reliable, repeatable performance. And having bad posture in no way enhances my concentration. ; ) I just finished watching Freds latest DVD and am currently reading his book. While I take issue with many of his tenets, I do appreciate his encouragement for archers to use what works for them ; ) I find Larry Yien to be more of a role model for me (Masters of the Barebow).

joe- once again great video,, food for thought,, I have a more up right stance than you,,using the hips as a pivot point, to maintain my spine angle,,, I believe there is a lot room for personal style in the world of archery,, if one throws enough arrows you find what works best for you,,,I think as group we should start referring to ourselves as intuitive not instinctive archers,, after the first arrow we build on pre-recorded data...yes?;;; talk with chad last he was gluing her up,,, maybe about wks more,,,will send pics when it arrives;;until then shoot straight-tmc

it arrived last week; will get some photos soon, shoot ability has always my first line when talking about a bow,, the goshawk for me,, draws very smoothly ( #50@28") medium grip seems to be sculpted for my hand, still finding my way with it,, but shoots were it is pointed and you are focusing,, flawless as to fit and finish/ lay up of the bow,,, worth ever penny and then some,( chad could be getting more them!),enjoyed your friend the grouse-tmc

I don't believe in the crouch. On of the benefits of traditional archery is you can take a shot at any angle. When you practice unless your working on pure form you should shooting from all different distances, can't angles, sitting, standing, kneeling. I only see the crouch beneficial for target archers but for hunting I wouldn't practice that.

Evo - to clarify, this technique should be used to obtain maximum accuracy. I agree that instinctive archery allows an archer to shoot from almost any position - this is just a technique that can be used to increase accuracy when needed. Thanks for watching!

The Crouch.... NOT for me! You look soooo off balance. BTW I've tried your Crouch and feels like to me that I'm way off balance and you could come up to me and push me over with 1 finger. If the Crouch is so good... why don't competition shooters do that??? But I'm sure lots of people will like it... it's just not for me. It just feels like a un natural position to me. Good Video

Hi William - thanks for the feedback and for trying the technique. If you feel off balance, you may be doing it wrong. Try getting into a position like a short stop in baseball, a person in a fight, a soccer goalie, or any sports analogy you'd like. It's called an "athletic position", and should add to your balance, not decrease it, which is why athletes do it. From a flat surface, this technique is inferior, but from ANY terrain that is uneven, you should have increased balance, and therefore better shooting. Thanks again for the feedback!
