Replacing the fuel pump in a 2004-2012 Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon

  • I've got a 2009 GMC Canyon and needed to replace the fuel pump. I thought I'd make a quick video showing how to do it. Here's a link to the pump I got, it came with the O-ring and seemed identical to the OEM one: amzn.to/3lnpGG7
    And the lock ring: amzn.to/3trwXaI
    I get a small cut if you use my links above. Hope they help!

      Man I did this job less then a year ago on my truck. Don't skimp and get a lesser pump. I got one that was 140 dollars off Rock auto and the pump works great but the fuel level sensor is throwing codes which causes the truck to have hard start issues and the fuel gauge to report empty at all times. I just spent 200 to get the Delphi. Your would think I would learn, if it is a hard job splurge for the good parts from the start. LOL

      @@bradenremillard7228 Not even sure what you mean, I never noticed rubber feet on any of them, go figure. I can tell you that the replacement Delphi solved all the issues. My aftermarket slightly cheaper unit lasted all of 9 months before throwing engine codes for electrical issues from the fuel sender.

    • @adamdport
      @adamdport  Před 3 lety

      @@bradenremillard7228 I don't recall seeing any rubber feet on mine. The bottom of the pump has a castle-like pattern that needs to press against the bottom of the tank to filter out large particles. I can't see what purpose rubber feet would serve, seems like they could even cause a problem if they prevented the above.

    When you stuck the magnet into the tank to clear some of the debris my brain nearly exploded. Been trying to figure out how to get that stuff out needing to do the job on a partially full tank myself. Pretty obvious and simple solution but it had eluded me. Appreciate the tip.

    Know this is an older video, BUT....
    Just wanted to leave an FIY for anyone else watching and you Adam. At the 4 min mark, where your removing the fuel lines and the tool didn't work.... That blue part on the connector. Push both sides together with your fingers and pull the lines off. The blue SHOULD remain on the lines, and be removed AFTER the fittings off (has 2 hidden tabs made visible when the fittings removed, to get it off the line. This is essentially the "lock" holding the lines in-place and at the correct depth for the O-ring in the fitting to seal around the metal tube.
    Slightly different and the slightly the same as the second, larger one.
    Glad it didn't leak or break and worked out, but your VERY lucky it didn't go horribly wrong and needing a nylon line repair kit.
    That said, nice video and well documented.

    @MG-bp8kj Před 2 lety +1

    I just completed this job on my 2010 Canyon Extended Cab. First of all the video is excellent and I referred to it multiple times during the repair. Here are the issues I had. 1st issue was the gas fill. It is a T30 torx bit. My screws were rusted in the fastner / clip and when they spun the clip that they were threaded into it destroyed the plastic portion of the gas fill. If there is any question of the screws not coming out, drill them out and replace them. 2nd issue was the electric connectors. In Adam’s video they popped right out but mine were stuck in there. On the connector on the drivers side of the pump, you need to stick a small screw driver into the forward side of the connector which should release the clip. I did not know this and I broke the piece of the clip that holds it to to the fuel pump. The 3rd issue was the bed was a-lot heavier than I thought. Start to finish it was about four hours. Also, I bought the removal tool for the ring that secures the fuel pump to the tank. I think it was worth it, but I still needed a hammer to assist it breaking it free. Thanks Adam for the great video!

    Hey Adam I have a question what is easier dropping the tank or removing the truck bed?

    • @adamdport
      @adamdport  Před 2 lety +1

      With the bed off you can work really comfortably and take your time, can address any rust issues on the top of your frame and under the bed, etc. If you drop the tank, you'll be flexing your fuel lines and will have to work on the ground a lot, and you might have 100lbs of fuel in your tank, but you could probably clean the tank out better than I could. If you end up dropping the tank could you leave another comment letting the next guy know which way you'd recommend?

  • @mark97213
    @mark97213 Před rokem

    Is it really easier than just dropping the fuel tank? Seems dropping the fuel tank would be easier that you can do yourself and you won't have to worry about scratching up the back of the cab or the box. Just curious.

    • @adamdport
      @adamdport  Před rokem

      Hard to say! Removing the bed gives you better access to the top of the frame and bottom of the bed for rust treatment. Dropping the tank might be faster if the hardware holding it up is in decent shape. I had a second vehicle and all the time in the world, and also didn't have a CZcams video to watch to show me what I was getting into. If you end up dropping the tank, could you reply again with your thoughts to help out the next guy?

    So I’ve taken the bed off the trunk and ready to go ahead and do the rest the only thing I’m concerned about is any particles of rust getting in the fuel line. I’ve seen another video where they drop the tank and then clean the tank out very well. In my case I would have to sphion the fuel out. I guess I’m asking should I be concerned about any particles in terms of delivery from the fuel to the engine.

    • @adamdport
      @adamdport  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes you should definitely be concerned. If anything gets in that line it could turn into a major headache. That being said I'm less concerned about stuff in the tank since there's a filter/strainer built into the fuel pump. But you should definitely be careful when removing the output line from the pump and make sure there's no debris in there before sliding it onto the new one. If you have the time/means/patience to drop the tank and clean/rinse it then it certainly can't hurt.
