I think not all women are so lucky of have a husband who can support our projects, but still the idea is great!
Wow! I wish the same soothing music was what I hear when my hubby builds things. lol Great project!!
+Tam2 haha. It's not always soothing music during construction. ;-) But it generally is when it's all done. Thanks for watching.
Will Britten Thanks for letting me know you enjoy these videos. I picked up my DIY skills from a variety of places: both my Granddads, my Dad, reading, videos. I think it's more a mind set than anything else and once you start it sort of builds on itself.
House of Hacks
Yeah exactly it's a way of thinking... that not everyone has
Using what you have is something we all need to do. You have specialized skills that can be learned by anyone interested. I have been sewing for years and the machines I now have didn't come to me the first time I threaded a needle, however the interest in the craft created the desire to buy tools when they became available and my skill was advanced enough to use them.
KEEP INSPIRING US. IT IS ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE SOMEONE WALK THROUGH A PROCESS TO A SUCCESSFUL END RESULT.
+Reglindis Eckhardt Great point. We all have skills because we were interested in developing them. There's nothing keeping us from developing additional ones in the future as we desire. Thanks for commenting.
Showing this video to my husband as soon as he comes home from work!! Really like this table.
Just the Good Bits Good Tips for Life Awesome! I hope it inspires you to make something great you can use. Thanks for watching.
GREAT GREAT GREAT job on this video....i enjoyed how it "moved along" and didn't lag on and on....was fun to watch the fast motion parts LOL....What a great collection of fine tools to do all of the tasks in building this sewing station....a SUPER FINE usage / recycling materials....this was great...and both of you were great...enjoyed the bits of humor here and there....
GOOD JOB and THUMBS....I am a self taught quilter....but i use to build houses...and raised my family up to GROWN Grandkids now...almost all grown...
Happy New Year 2015
Ken from Orlando, Florida, USA
Thanks Ken! Glad you enjoyed it and Happy New Year's to you too!
No Oscars for the acting in this video but seeing how the table was made was fun and the actual table turned out beautiful.
That's a nice sewing space. Time for me to tackle a new sewing centre I think. Never occurred to me to use filing cabinets for part of the base. Duh!! Thank you.
Awesome video! You have some great tools (toys) to play with and made it look so simple. I loved the fact that you repurposed something you no longer needed to make something you did need. Our kids need someone like you to inspire them. Looking forward to your next video.
+Denise White Thank you for the great compliment.
beautiful job, I'm jealous😃 Gave me a idea for my sewing room. Thanks for sharing. Cute couple😃
Glad to be an inspiration for your own space. Peace.
Excellent job making that sewing table. You did inspire me, but I only wish I had the tools and know how to do it to your level of brillance. Thank you very much.
Thanks and glad you found it inspiring! Work at the level you're at and you'll get better over time. We were all less skilled at something last year than we are today and today are less skilled than we will be next year. Just keep at it. Cheers.
You make me want to transform the garage into a shop. Thanks for sharing!
Go for it!
This is sewing luxury! Wonderful, talented spouse made a sturdy treat for his blessed wife. Thanks for sharing!
Bonnie Konjevich Thanks for the kind words. Peace.
Bonnie Konjevich - As a former competent sewer, I can attest to the fact that if you can sew - you can do wood-work. Being able to read and follow directions is the key. I have spent the last 20 years renovating my home, yard, and furniture projects. Tools do cost a lot, as do sewing supplies - all of it is cheaper than a trip to the psychiatrist's couch. Making something tangible is good for the mind in this day when we get such limited access to such things. Have fun - biscuit cutters are great, and I WISH I had a kreg jig
I applaud you for re-purposing the wood! Bravo! Looks great :)
+Jennifer Lyons Yeah, I hate throwing things away. Thanks for watching.
Very creative, great job. I love to upcycle. This is wonderful!
Thanks. I hate throwing things away because I'm always thinking there's got to be a future use for it. Peace.
Great project! Well done!👌
This was awesome!!! He put a lot of love into the work!
Tonya Majette Thanks for watching!
Woooooooow that was beautiful. I sew as well and I can definitely appreciate a table as beautiful as that. Two thumbs up.
Thanks. It was a lot of fun to make and she's getting a lot of use out of it. Cheers.
I love watching husband and wife projects. I watched this video a couple of times even though I will never be making my sewing table. It was interesting to watch.
+Melatina77 Glad you liked it and thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it.
Loved the idea!! Great job
Elida Ramos Glad you liked it. Thanks for subscribing.
I had a great time watching this video. The project turned out awesome and you should be very proud. You editing skills are also excellent. I stayed glued to the screen from start to finish. Thanks for taking the time to make, edit and upload this awesome video.
+IRDeezlSmoke I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching. Peace.
Great table & video. I really like the music you chose (especially transition at circular saw part). Also liked the design of the shelves you repurposed. Thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, my wife made those shelves long before we met. Cool design but she didn't want them anymore. Peace.
Now i’m broke buying a new sewing machine upgrade from 1942 ....I had no idea how wonderful they really are!
Haha, yeah, much of that old equipment is really, really well made. It doesn't have all the fancy stuff new ones have, but for basic stitching, they just go and go and go. Are you familiar with Nani over at Seamstressed? She just bought and put into operational condition an 1800's model sewing machine: czcams.com/video/xjZaCqXMgxk/video.html
Really well made! Brilliant
Thank you!
Very creative and beautiful woodworking skills!!! what a great guy and is a keeper.
Thanks!
Great job Harley!!
+Cindy Happel Thanks Cindy!
Very nice! I enjoyed watching how you executed the Biscuit joinery.
Thank you! It'd be nice if it went that fast in real life. :-) Cheers.
Omg that's flippin' awesome!
Stephanie Heu Thanks! It's working well for my wife.
great, wow very creative.love the idea. we have lots and lots of kitchen cabinets out in the garage (from dad remodeling kitchens), and was always thinking about converting these into a sewing table station.
+alejandra pina Go for it! Get them out of the garage and doing something useful. :-)
great vision and reuse of materials, well done!
+Ryan Tsuruda Thanks!
You guys are great!
Thank you!
You are vey skilled! Great design and execution.
Thank you. Peace.
Wonderful innovating. That is one husband and wife that prove that working together CAN WORK!
+courag1 Thanks! It's taken awhile but I think we're getting better at it. Peace.
wow fancy coming over to the uk i really could do with a new sewing table but my other half cannot do diy to save his life. he passed out just from me plumbing the washing machine in. i bet your wife is really pleased with the table x
haha. Your other half may be up to the task, but sounds like you are! Yeah, my wife is enjoying her new table. Next project for her is to redo her cutting table. Cheers.
what a great idea for today's larger sewing machines
Thanks Carmen. It's working out really well for my wife. But you can't change just one part of the system. :-) One of the projects slated for this winter is to redo her cutting/work table.
fantastic work!!
+ella prevette Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching. Cheers.
Great video, love these builds! Fantastic looking workshop. How did you acquire your DIY skills was it through your 'employer' as you mentioned?
I have an old desk that I am using as my sewing table. It has a hutch above it. But now I can see that hutch coming apart and extending my table. Our office has just emptied some old cabinets that were used to store mechanical and electrical drawings. I wonder what they are going to do with those? HMMM can you say thread, ribbon, and other notions drawers?
I'm still here. Nice project.
JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!
Thank you! Peace.
That is fabulous!
Thank you!
omg I love it .Great job
MsVision4 Glad you liked it. Thanks!
Awesome idea...I will be getting a new embroidery machine and will need a new table as I am using a fold up buffet table...its definitely not sturdy enough for a embroidery machine...thanks for the idea...it looks sturdy enough !
+Gail Laviolette Congratulations on the new machine! Yeah, one thing this table is is sturdy. I had to move it the other day; it's heavy and solid! Thanks for watching. Peace.
Question do you think the old style wood sewing table can be converted to fit the new one inside? I seen some I like but not sure how it works
...........that was terrific...and I've just added this same machine to my arsenal of machines...
+Howard Goldstein Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you like your new machine. My wife really loves her's. Thanks for watching.
Great job! I am a firm believer in repurposing as much as possible. Less in the landfills.
Same here!
smart and creative carpenter...very professional
Thank you!
Amazing! I'd like to see the cutting area a tad bigger but this was simply amazing to watch!
Thank you! My wife doesn't do any cutting on this. It's only for use with the sewing machine. But we are working on a cutting table for her.
Awesome! I love it!?
well done...it's amazing what you can build when you have over $ 1000. in tools..but the tools don't work on their own..nice work..
Good
Yes... Tools are the key... By Great job!
You could do an almost identical build with a drill, skill saw, and a few clamps. It wouldn't look as nice or be quite as strong, but there are other options that could be substituted for the tools he uses. The planer is only necessary because he is reusing wood.
That is a great idea!
Thanks, glad you liked it. Hope you find it useful.
Wow!...very,very!..great job!
Lidia Contreras Thanks!
Great vide showcasing your use of tools and genius talent for thinking outside the box to create/repurpose items and give them new life with a purpose! I would love to work with the tools as you did to create a sewing table. Just one of my dreams to make one for myself, one day. You have shown us all, one does not need a fancy workbench in order to create something spectacular. Great use of tossed out items with little out of pocket money spent to complete! Gotta love that ;-)
+Vanessa Monteith Thanks! If you don't have the tools yourself but want to work on a project, you might look around your area. Some school districts have adult ed/continuing ed programs (check both high schools and colleges) with courses that allow access to shop environments. Some larger metropolitan areas also have privately run co-op workshop spaces you can join; search for "makerspace + your city". Cheers.
Wow Awesome! You are SOO Talented!
Keep up the Great work!
I enjoyed watching you build; and the Music was Perfect! =D
~Add Love!™
beautiful!!!
+Beverly Williams Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
wow that is very beautiful
Thank you. Peace.
Thanks ah goor. Yeah, tools that work on their own cost a lot more. :-)
Really, a nice work congrat...
Pedro Gabriel Mezerhane Picon Thank you!
I am IN LOVE with your work shop and I wish my husband had one, sigh and if I'm honest I really love your wife's sewing machine. Great video on what you can make with a great work shop and imagination. Ask your wife if I can borrow you for a few weeks and I can loan her mine who is good at tile and electrical? hehehe
+LesMess Bucilova Haha. My wife said to feel free to stop by next time you're in Utah. Thanks for watching.
House of Hacks LOL LOL.. very kind wife.. but I thought only Eskimos lend their wives.. so I was told. . Or is that some old wives tale? Excuse the pun LOL. Yes I too would have you on loan...
😍😍 i wish! 👍 your very talented.
Love this sewing table, you both did a Great job. I like the indention where the machine sits, can you put an extension table on your machine in this space?
Yes, my wife has a SewSteady she uses. That space was specifically sized so that extension table fills all the space, giving her a smooth, continuous surface for the material.
Did you see this video where I made a matching cutting table? It has a similar cutout for her serger. czcams.com/video/e8fzthMmZ1M/video.html
very cool!
Lmao yall put on a lil show 👍🔥👏👏yall should release the vhs soon! This truly is the feature presentation.😂
haha. Thanks for watching.
Your welcome I just subbed 👍
Thanks! Be seeing you around!
Very Creative with your recycled materials. I wish i had those tools available to me.
+Bill Hofeldt Thanks! I hope you can take inspiration from this and do what you can with what you have. Cheers.
I like the way they read the lines this mean we all graduate this year
Thanks for the comment.
Hi pls I want to cut a hole to put a sewing machine recessed n a little bit of round corner cut pls can u show me some ting how to cut corners. Using a router machine pls
Nice project, well done! I wish I had all those tools you have,I could make everything I want 😀
Thank you! Don't let not having fancy tools stop you. Lots of cool stuff has been made with just simple hand tools.
@@HouseOfHacks thanks. Yesterday I drew a project for my sewing table. I do have some tools but not professional ones. In the end,all I need is some nails and a hammer if I don't have anything else. Nothing is stopping me. Thanks
These weirdos are perfect in every way. I'm glad in here.
***** Good to see you again! Thanks!
oh ok then it's "crystal" thanks for letting me know. you did a great job!
Very nice!
Thanks! Peace.
very nice table.
Thank you! Peace.
Beautiful awsome
hope she gets up and makes you coffee in the morning
haha, she's a great wife!
just kiddin around a litttle peace! thank you for nice video
Yep, understood. :-) You're welcome. Peace!
Good job guys :)
Thanks +Lesley Gilbert!
Nice work!!! Wondered where you were going to go with the offset height at first...! On a different note, I would like to see a vid sometime on how you set up your dust extraction. Would that be possible please? Are you happy with your setup or is there a tweak that you think you could make? Not suggesting that you go the whole changeover to a new system but what adjustments would help where? I've seen many of your other vids and they suggest that a reasoned approach to many workshop issues could be tackled with a tad of ingenuity. Reason why I am asking you specifically is that I like the scientific demonstrable verifiable manner that you've approached other issues on your CZcams channel. Cheers.
+cognitor900 Thanks for the comments.
On the dust extraction request, I've done a couple videos. Did you see czcams.com/video/XQGOusi5x3E/video.html and czcams.com/video/UbLElnfZmno/video.html ?
If you have seen these, what other details would you be interested in?
I have an improved hose connector port design that I'll be posting a video about soon and sometime later this year I'm going to be covering some of the details of the remote switch and possible improvements to it. At some point I want to add a cyclone dust extractor to the system too.
Cheers.
Harley GREAT VIDEO!!! now I have a question for you. is it possible to make a video of a cabinet that would be similar to those ones that hide a bed, but instead when you pull it you have a sewing machine hidden inside that folds open into a small table like but with enough table left over to put your cloth material that you are going to sew?
rafivan39 Thanks! That's an interesting idea. By "cabinet that would be similar to those ones that hide a bed" I assume you mean like a Murphy bed? (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murphy_bed) That could be a fun project to work on, unfortunately I probably won't have a chance to do anything with this idea in the foreseeable future. Here are some images for inspiration, although none of them are what I really have in mind, although they'd be simpler to do: www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1230&bih=695&q=drop+down+sewing+table&oq=drop+down+sewing+table&gs_l=img.3..0.3998.6901.0.7054.22.10.0.12.12.0.118.797.8j1.9.0....0...1ac.1.64.img..1.21.820.EoQM1c4EBko
correct, thanks for the links they are wonderful
rafivan39 You're welcome.
how are you going to make quilts in that small area? Or did I misunderstand something you said in the beginning? Good carpentry job! Fun to watch.
No, no misunderstanding. Yes, she uses her machine for quilting. The table is sized appropriately for the machine. Individual squares don't require much room and quilting smaller items (like baby quilts and decorator items) have plenty of room. Quilting larger items (like for an adult's bed) are too big for the machine so, making the table larger wouldn't really help. For those large quilts, once she has things pieced, she rents time on a big, room sized quilting machine.
That said, we have been talking about some ways of making handling larger pieces easier. We may even have a video about that at some point in the future. :-)
Thanks for watching.
I wish I had saws and drills that quiet!!! Please tell me where I can get these! lol Great sewing table--your wife should be very happy!
Haha, yeah, wish they were that quiet in real life. :-) Thanks, she's pretty happy with it.
Nice!
Thanks!
Hi! Nice video. My question is this, do you draw up plans or do you just have an idea in your head and wing it?
+Luke Waxer It sort of depends on the complexity of the project. Easy things I just do up out of my head. This one I made a couple rough sketches, not a scale drawing, but just something to help me and my wife make sure we were communicating about what she wanted. Thanks for asking. Cheers.
Thanks!
Bravo!
Thanks!
I Do enjoy your videos! .btw, any tips tips on how to make a piano stool with storage in the seat area? Thanks 😓
The easiest would be to find some legs with the tapers pre-cut, nice looking wood for the sides that works with the legs, some thin plywood for the bottom and thicker plywood for the top/seat. In the wood that goes between the legs vertically, cut a rabbit wide enough for the bottom plywood and then cut it to length. I'd use pocket screws to screw the sides to the legs, sliding the bottom in after three sides are put together. The bottom will need to be notched in the corners for the legs. Once all that's assembled, the top can be attached with a couple hinges and upholstered. Hope that helps. Cheers.
House of Hacks thank you very much for your quick response! Much appreciated..will certainly put this into action soon. In the meantime, I'll keep watching and getting inspired, Cheers!
You're welcome! See you around.
o my my i just think what yo do with my old cabinet and some pillé of bed pièces hahaha you guys rock I have similar items have hammer paint brush and hand sew sanding paper and lot 9th determination ...man on this ovation will be great help but I need make it without him hahaha for what we have B&Q cutting services hahaha. you make me inspired and actually I will need now drag my cabinet up the stairs haha what I took down last week haha haha my friends will have this crazy faces again. ......woman and them changeable minds hahahaha
You can do this. Like you said, it just takes determination. As they say: where there's a will, there's a way. Go for it!
Great job!!! I am going to do one but it probably won't look as good as yours!
My recent hack: Turn a used swamp cooler into a chili roaster. Take motor out. Bolt squirrel cage to top. Use wire mesh on one side make a pivoting gate on the other side (where the air goes in) use the wheel where the belt was hooked up to to spin. Roast by using your ditch burner (small one). You shoot the flames onto the chilies where the air went out of the squirrel cage.
Free and fun for the guys to watch over some beers. DONT BURN YOURSELF!!!
Thanks!
That sounds like a cool idea for the roaster. Do you have any pictures of it posted anywhere?
Peace.
Can you do one about the combines
Sorry, not sure what you mean by "the combines." If you can elaborate a bit more, I'll see what I can do. Cheers.
Wow! It's really beautiful. Wish someone could make me one!
Thanks. You could be that someone. :-) Cheers.
I like the overall flow of the work, your different angles, etc. And NO to people wishing diagrams and plans. Every machine is unique, as is the sewer. Measuring tools and graph paper are what you need. An insert that goes around the machine to flush it to the table would be needed. I just need the kreg jig.
Susan Sawarin Yeah, for a project like this where most of it is repurposed materials, plans wouldn't be terribly effective. Perhaps I should have shown some of the design/planning stage; something for me to consider in the future. And, yes, this was desinged to use with an insert; I neglected to show it in the closing shot. Thanks for watching and commenting. Peace.
Awesome
Glad you liked it!
WOW!! can you teach my husband how to do that??? Great video!!
Great job, this is what I would love to have, but I want my machine to be inserted into the table that way it will be flush with the table and make it so easy to sew on with big quilts. But I love that you make things for your wife. She is a very lucky lady. Kudo's to you both.
markay vintageformeforever Thanks for commenting. We didn't show it in this video, but my wife has a plastic extension table that fits between the wood and the machine in the cutout with the curve. With that in place she does have a continuous flat surface with the bonus of easy access to the bobbin without having to move the machine.
House of Hacks She sure is one lucky gal. I would love to have a big table to house my machine, and also have the ability to have an ironing surface on one side and cutting on the other. Now that is a dream table. I bet you will come up with one of those sometime in the future. :) Thanks for sharing.
markay vintageformeforever Haha. Funny you should mention that. I'm in the process of making her a cutting table, we're still working out the details, but it'll probably have an ironing surface built into it.
LOL!! that is funny. Again I say, she is a very lucky lady. But a happy wife equals happy life. You both seem to have that. Happy sawing and sewing to both of you. Please share when you get it finished. Thanks
Thanks!!!
You're welcome!
Salud!
Recessed down in the table instead of sitting on top, that way the work surfaces are coplanar.
Fabulous job😁😁😁. How does that song go again? If I were a Lady and you were a Carpenter.. LOL
Thanks! Yes it goes something like that: czcams.com/video/gIYF_OttHls/video.html :-) Peace.
Subscribed :-)
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the content!
this is like watching an episode of Sheldon and Amy's Fun with flags, very creative though, wish I had all that equipment to work with
Haha, thanks. It's nice to have the equipment, but don't let not having it stop you. You just have to be creative with what you do have. Cheers.
That was amazing!! Also that it only took you only 9:56!! LOL!!😀😀📧📦📪📐📐📐📐
+Lsu2012Bama lol. Thanks!
Wow- Building at the speed of light. If we had not already watched the New Yankee Workshop, we would have had NO IDEA what you were doing. Do you have an option to watch it slower with instructions? And I am wondering about the sewing machine not fitting right into a "well" so the sewing surface is flush with the tabletop. It seems awkward the way it is. But I love the design element of it sitting on top of the file cabinets but I had no idea what you were doing there either. It was massively confusing. I guess you are more geared for the accomplished woodworker. OH well.
Thanks for your feedback. It's a balance between giving enough information and not too much. In videos like this, what I try to do is give ideas, overviews and inspiration, not a step-by-step guide, since, when repurposing materials, what I have and what other will have won't be exactly the same.
Regarding how the sewing machine fits, I'm not sure why it seems awkward to you. The sewing machine in-feed is at the same height as the rest of the table. There's a clear plastic extension that fills the gap between the sewing machine and the wood. So, there's a single level across the entire surface for material to rest on.
Peace!
Ummm.... I want the plans for the 2x8 shelves. Love them.
+Joe Froehlich ha ha, sorry, I don't have those. My wife made them before we met.
