- Hello my friends! It's been so long since the last video.. I'm glad that i'm finally back.
As you can noticed on my instagram profile, last time i was working on a few strike block planes. With every new plane my first strike block was getting uglier, so there was only one way - refreshing!
During the process i've changed the iron for longer and a little bit wider.
For the new wedge and mouth closer i've used a piece of pear wood.
As you can see in the video i've used new solution - vacuum chamber. I'm gonna soak my planes with boiled linseed oil before finishing - that will reduce the tendency to moisture absorbing.
You can ask - reduce to what extent? This is to be checked - let me know if you will like to watch that kind of video, with different kind of woods.
For the finish i've used two coats of osmo 3032 and rubbing with steel wool after each coat.
If you got any questions feel free to wrtie a comment.
Oh, one important thing - i decided to change my daily job for fulltime planemaking.
I'll start since 01 november :)
Thank you for your time!
Stavros
BTW. Usually i don't take orders for my planes.
The most sure way to get some of them is take a part in giveaways for my supporters.

That sounds very exciting! I hope you have great succes with your fulltime planemaking. Would love to see a video with your testings. Thanks for sharing!
All the best with your new job !!
Hope you'll get the success you deserve 😊
Thanks for sharing !!
You may be able to get away with using either linseed oil or polymerized linseed oil with the vacuum method. The residual air plus the solvent (e.g. turpentine, acetone, mineral spirits, xylene) in boiled linseed oil are likely causing the excessive bubbling over.
Might look into something called the "London finish": mix varnish with paint thinner 50/50, put in a layer let it dry, next layer wet sand with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, next 2-3 layers wet sand with 600 grit wet/dry, sand with the 600 grit and clean before applying a final layer. The slurry from the wet sanding blocks up the wood pores. I use this on tool handles and IME it's a tough, sweat-proof finish.
Next time i will do the vacuum in stages, not all at once. It should reduce bubblings
So pleased you're back on YT with your stunning craftmanship. You've been missed by many I'm sure. Future plans sound very exciting, all the very best of luck, you deserve it.
Thank you!
So happy you’re back! And congrats on going full time with plane making!
Thank you Andre!
BTW - very happy you’re back
Yesss! Youre back!! I barely survived the withdrawls. 😁
The tool you created is a work of art.

Beautiful work and the plane cuts amazing well. Watching this was like an apprenticeship.
Thanks a lot!
Super post showing your methods. Outstanding craftsmanship. A lot to learn from this, thanks.
I thought I had watched this before, but don't remember the router sled jig for making the iron wedge. Very clever!
It is great to see a new clip from you. It has been a long time. I have missed your work.
Thank you Roger!
Glad you're back. Love your hand work with chisels on all the edges. My favorite part of your builds. Wish you the best of luck. You are very talented and have a wonderful eye for quality.
Thanks a lot!
More beautiful work, beautifully done. A pleasure to watch, as always.
Hey Lynn :)
I love the sandpaper on the chisel blade idea….
I’ve said it before. Every time you start a project I think I have an idea of where you are going with it. Not a chance. You pull out a gouge scraper! Freakin genius! Absolute masterclass in finishing hardwood and fine details!
Thanks Adam :)
I'd be happy to watch videos on oil soaking and moisture absorption.
I dont even own a plane or do wood working..but i love watching you making plane and the finish product is amazing..glad you upload a new video and hope everything is well for you..cheers

Thank you for masterful expostion and especially well done on this vacuum chamber for boiled linseed oil. It sounds like an excellent methods of preserving wood. I hope you will be able to show us the results with the types of wood used in toolmaking.
Golden hands!!! Bravo!!!
Another masterpiece! I watched with a fading heart. Thank you maestro!

Content de vous revoir.
Magnifique travail et magnifique rabot.

Hey James 🤟
Que maravilla de trabajo, eres un genio, te felicito 👏👏👏
It's been way too long Stavros, good to have you back!
Glad to see your work again.
Hey Berl :)
Super. W końcu znalazł Pan czas. Pozdrawiam.
Absolutely fantastic
I liked the color contrast of the old wedges, but the more even tones of the new pear ones mixing with the color of the body but still maintaining a gentler contrast after the oil is super attractive too!
Great work as usual. One thing that you should do is a video of how you prepare (how to sharpen them) and use a chisel scraper. This is subject rarely discussed or seen on the web.
Thanks! Please check "Blunt chisel technique" video's by Bill Carter.
We've missed your skills as a craftsman and film maker very much. Your 'visual explanations' hold so many details to re watch, note and try to master!
Always an inspiration to attempt more.
Thank you Jamie!
Pura arte...Pure art
It is a privilege to watch your precision at work. Keep it comin.

So so nice! I learned a few new techniques today. Not sure why that karate chop and finger snapping technique doesn't work for me. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Tim :)
Huge fan. Glad you’re back!

We missed you Stavros 😁
Gloria in excelsis Deo! Welcome back.
Hello Dalibor :)
Yikes! Looks like you raised your plane making skills to another level or two. Your video skills have gone up a notch or two also.
I've seen the vacuum method for epoxy and solid rocket fuels, not once did I ever consider it for oiling tools. Wow! Worth the wait sir!
Thanks a lot :)
Just beautiful !!!! Your plane making makes me want to try.
You should try 👍

Seeing you back has made my day. lol
P.S. Oh, forgot to ask you: what exactly is a block strike plane?
Thanks a lot :) Strike block plane is purposed to striking/shooting the end grain surface of the boards 👍

wow, stunning work as usual! I wish you the best of luck with going full time into plane making! You definitely have the passion and skills to pull that off.
Full Time plane maker! I hope you succeed beyond your wildest dreams. No body makes more beautiful planes than you. Glad you are back making CZcamss, they are so inspirational. (I’ve made three planes myself now, the latest one is a keeper).
Yes, I would watch comparisons. I have surprised just how much wood moves with changes in humidity. My shop is unheated and only has a 200W solar system for light.
Thank you William :)
Einfach nur genial!!
Thank you Stavros for this excellent video. We all know that editing and posting takes up a fair amount of time so we do understand why it has taken so long.
Beautiful work as to expected.
As for me I haven’t been out to my shop for over two months. I have been busy taking care of ailing friends and such. Not to mention my own health has taken a hit twice this summer.
Greetings from the high plains of Texas.
Hey Ryan! Cheers 🍻
