      I think this version you mention is a dead end. I think we should distinguish between endings and dead ends. One ending that I haven't heard so far, is when the game doesn't get released at all due to Stephan being arrested. This may be the 5th ending that BrainPilot haven't discovered yet.

A simple twitter story the first episode is some how supposed to turn into being able to share conscious on the cloud. It’s ruined it for me I’d personally love the entire thing to be separate. I like little hints like the forks from white bear and now into bandersnatch but Charlie brooker forcing the inevitability of the coming together moment will forever leave a bad taste in my mouth.

    I felt like the ending where he got on the train with his mother and died both in the past and in present day was related to the idea of the your soul making the decisions as mentioned by Colin in his home. The idea that Stefan's soul goes back in past and dies with his mother on the train like he always felt he should have, leaving his body in present time empty (dead) in the counselling session. Which in my opinion influences the fact that counselling never helped him, it was his dads decision and it wasn't working which ultimately lead to his death during one of his sessions because the only way he felt he could make up for his mothers death, was to actually go back and die with her.

    Although this form of media isn't really a new thing, bandersnatch did it better than everyone who tried before. They introduced this concept to the mainstream media and it only shows the potential it has as a subgenre of movies. I agree that Netflix is the technology in the episode but we definitely are not in control. The paths you can chose are varied but limiting and its like what Stephan himself says in the movie; he took out parts of his game to streamline it and give the player illusion of control. There could have been far more endings and paths but they chose not to, some of the choices feel like they push you down a specific path and in the end; always lead you to the same place, the true ending where the game is rebooted by Netflix, you can fight back but this is the only path that automatically rolls the end credits rather than you manually starting them at a "Go back" screen. You, as the viewer, are being controlled by none other than Netflix.
    As always: Black Mirror is deep, exploring the human mind and psychology behind it all.

    SPOILERS, obviously lol
    (tl;dr I found 6 endings, getting the last one after seeing all the others shows an extra scene)
    So, all of the more "concrete" and "definitive" endings I've gotten so far are:
    1- Stefan goes to jail after killing his dad. This itself has a few variations depending on how you handle dad's body. Bandersnatch will either get 2.5 stars or 5 stars if Stefan managed to complete the game in time after killing dad or someone, Colin or Mr. Thakur, will show up at Stefan's house. Also, Tuckersoft will either go into administration or be liquidated.
    2- Instead of going to see Dr. Haynes with his dad, Stefan will follow Colin and ask for help. He goes to Colin's home and meets his girfriend, Kitty, and baby daughter, Pearl. They both take LSD no matter what you choose and discuss the idea of time, parallel dimensions and PACS, Program and Control system. I feel it's important to take both options of who jumps here because one leads to a direct ending where Bandersnatch is abruptly finished and isn't given a rating, and another choice leads further down the rabbit hole but with Colin missing.
    3- One ending where Stefan is aware he is in a Netflix program and has a fight with Dr. Haynes and his dad, leading to him being dragged out of the clinic aware of his "friend from the future", i.e. us as the watchers/players.
    4- Another ending where Stefan is still aware of being in a Netflix show and tries to leap out the window as Dr. Haynes is about to fight him, but the 4th wall breaks and we see the filming crew try to snap Stefan/Mike out of it.
    5- Leading from one variation of the the first ending I listed, Stefan managed to complete Bandersnatch after killing his dad and it gets 5 stars and high accolades, but we're shown a modern day news report about the discovery of Stefan murdering his father, Bandersnatch being pulled off shelved and him going to jail. We see an adult Pearl following her father's footsteps in game design recreating Bandersnatch as the Netflix show we're experiencing, but also that she is falling victim to it's same power it had over Stefan. Credits roll throughout this ending but it goes back to the decision point screen instead of Netflix popping out to load the next episode of Black Mirror, which was for me, ironically, Metalhead lol
    6- After experiencing all of the other endings, Stefan steps through the mirror as young Stefan and becomes aware of where his dad kept his Rabbit. He unlocks the safe using TOY and places the Rabbit back under his bed. He finds it before his mother leaves and goes with her on the train, both of them dying as it derails, causing adult Stefan to die in Dr. Hayne's office.
    The first time I got ending 6 after my first "playthrough" the credits started playing and Netflix popped out to play the next video. BUT, after my third run to try to experience as many other endings as I could see, there's a scene after doing ending 6 last where Stefan is back on the bus going to Tuckersoft but instead listens to the Bandersnatch demo tape rather than music. The whole scene of him on the bus plays but with old internet dial up beeping playing instead.

    You failed to mention that after accepting the job offer and getting a 0 out of 5 stars review, he tells his dad that he'll just "try again". We get flashbacks of what we just saw from the beginning of the movie(which Collin refers to as invitations to the past to make another decision). Everything is the same up until he meets Collin at Tuckersoft and Collin asks "We've met before?" Stephan says no, but is able to identify that Collin's game Nosedyve(Which is an easter egg of a Black Mirror Episode Nosedive) has a buffer error due to the sprites eyeballs overloading the video memory. Collin is surprised and asks how he knew that. Stephan says "I just did." THIS is huge because we as the viewer realize that not only did we as the viewer go back in time, so did Stephan. Now we must differentiate what we saw as fact or just flashback from another universe. For example, Stephan remembers that Collin jumped out of the window when Kitty(Collin's wife) asks him if he's seen him. The weird thing is Kitty was there but has no memory of ever meeting Stephan. Deep shit.

    There's a small subtheme about free will (or the illusion thereof) which I found to be super interesting! There are some decisions that you can make while watching - which are important - that have the same outcome no matter which you choose. For example when you either accept or deny the LSD, either way Stefan takes it and proceeds to the suicide scene. I found it interesting that Brooker introduces the illusion of free will to the viewer, but you can only find out after multiple viewings.

    The ending where Stefan descends into paranoid schizophrenia (entering PAC into the safe) was amazing in the way the conspiracy all made sense and seemed real to him, formed a consistent set of facts that with a little rewriting of his memories turned his dad and doctor into monsters. Also if you chose Netflix, then to jump out the window, and wonder what's happened to his actor.. is that really Stefan or is Bandersnatch just a memetic-hazard in general :D

This whole thing was like a weird fictionalised flashback for me.

  • @Top-Lip
    @Top-Lip Před 5 lety

    This is my favourite black mirror story so far, I love how even though we get to make choices, the narrative fucks with us and shows us how little control even we have. White Christmas had a masterful plot twist, San junipero had an excellent juxtaposition on the value of life vs superficial immortality, but I don't think there's a single episode that matches the depth in this episode, and the foreshadowing of the dog digging up the dead dad, at the start was brilliant. This episode really reminds me of Donnie Darko.

  • @TheKetamineConnoisseur

    The story evolves even after each ending, the option to go back and change events continues and further develops new options. The idea of choice being but a idea the user believes in but doesn’t actually have meaning in the long run, to achieve, in my opinion, the final ending where he gets on the train, as your prompted to do, has no more options left and rolls the credits.

  • @EverywhereNYC

  • @LucasRodrigues-wc6xg
    @LucasRodrigues-wc6xg Před 5 lety +2

    I think that the idea of the “episode” was that you (as much as the character) wasn’t in control. Did anyone wonder the reason of the timer that appears when you got to “make” a choice? When it first appeared, I was like “what will happens if I let it go down without doing anything”? And the answer was that it made a choice by itself. So I thought that, maybe, my intervention was just an illusion to keep me think that I was in control. So I decide to make no decision at all. The results was: (i) I saw playing every possible outcome, but in the end the plot had just one “satisfactory” (mostly for the character) result, he dies in the psychologist's office after decided, in that pass, to go with his mother in the train trip, which crashed killing him and his mother as the other passengers. So, I think that the viewer intervention is just an illusion. The options only gives you the feeling that your choices is relevant but in the end it isn’t. About that, is important to say that this idea was explicit point out in the “episode”. First, when Stefan watches that VHS documentary, an old woman always says that destiny is unchangeable; and in the version of the finale when Stefan makes a top notch game, he tells his employer that the secret of the success was, not how much possible outcome the choices the player made could give (so he did not need to make a bunch of storylines), but that the “choices” given was in fact an illusion, the end was always, invariantly, the same.

    i remember seeing a theory that the recurrence of the white bear symbol was supposed to signify that this episode is stefan's torture (like victoria's from the white bear episode), especially since every time he woke up he gasped in that exact way that victoria did. in this theory, then, /we're/ the audience from white bear, and we're taking enjoyment in his torture, since every choice leads to a bad ending for stefan.

    main endings/endings that let you go to the credits (spoilers):
    1) the fight with the psychologist and his dad dragging him out
    2) the fight with the psychologist and stefan finding that he's in a movie/film set
    3) PAC ending where stefan finds out (or imagines) that his father was controlling him in an experiment.
    4) 5/5 ending where you kill and cut up the dad and stefan gets imprisoned. colin's daughter works on a netflix adaption of it in the future.

    @Incubookie Před 5 lety

    Youre supposed to keep going and get every ending possible, each time you start over or make different options, it carries over and stefan remembers certain things collin said from the previous time, ultimately resulting in stefan calling a phone number that was hidden in certain sentences throughout the story
