Magnesium Metalshop Fire!

What happens when hot chips from a Bridgeport land into an open bin with oily rags and magnesium? Here we see what happened, and how a Class D fire extinguisher can be used to put out the fire. We also cover the steps that have been taken to make sure this doesn't happen again.

I go into 1000 machine shops and 95% wont even bid on a magnesium job, some insurance co have a rider (no hazardous materials)

He was pushing the wheel as if there was no tomorrow. However, The stupidest thing was to hold that bin so close to the machine, so why do you still keep that bin so close to a potential source of hot chips?

Yup the right kind of fire equipment tools or Long Way magnesium can burn so hot it will melt right through One of those cans in probably and then some. We threw a old Volkswagen transmission in the fire one night at a party and we were all sitting around with welding helmets on It burn bright white until it was done

Wouldve been funny it they high fived and then looked back at it for a second and it violently erupted in flames again

I used to machine magnesium hubs. Was told the ally content was quite high so this wouldnt be a problem
Years later im not so sure 😂
