I hate that prior to Pete Davison, both John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy, were the last 2 men to have rested their hands on the sheer material covering its lower back, while a woman was wearing it. I hate that the only known photo of Marilyn Monroe with JFK & RFK was taken that night, wearing that dress….I hate that it was her last public appearance before her death. And I *REALLY* hate that so many people don’t understand why that’s such a huge deal, because we’ve pushed society to the brink of ambivalence where history is concerned if it means having the flashiest, most expensive, rarest spotlight in the world for 4 minutes and 27 seconds. That dress was sacred & should have remained that way. *HOWEVER,* the dress doesn’t belong to the Smithsonian, it belongs to Ripley’s Believe it or Not, and they paid $4.8 million for the privilege of being able to lend it to a Kardashian if they want to. It pisses me off, but I mean…here we are.
That being said (mainly to drive home the degree to which I dislike Kim Kardashian, and I hate that she thought she deserved to wear the dress) neither dress was ruined by Kim. The dress was like that when Ripley’s bought it. Marilyn only wore it the one time, but she wore it all night long & she’d been literally sewn into it, so when she had to use the restroom, she had to wrestle it up…when she sat down in cars, or on chairs, (and there was a sit down dinner that night) she then had to stand up again in a skin tight dress. She was filming a movie at the time in LA, so she flew to NY to attend the DNC event, was sewn into the dress, driven to Madison Square Garden, (late, also…she was very late, lol) and immediately went on stage. She flew back to LA following the gala, wearing the dress because she couldn’t get out of it. She even slept in it before she was able to get someone to her house to help her get out of it the following day. It was created from marquisette fabric, which is very fragile & tears easily even when you’re being super cautious, & there were 2500 - 6000 crystals hand stitched into the fabric by way of metal settings. The sharp points on those settings can easily snag and/or tear fabric. The dress was in the exact condition when Ripley’s bought it, as it was when Marilyn was finally able to shed it. There was damage. The damage is specifically outlined, including a hand drawn diagram pointing out the placement of each imperfection, in the documentation included with the dress when it was auctioned off to Ripley’s. Ripley’s has released several in depth statements disputing rumors that Kim damaged the dress, and have included evidence to back it up. If you look closely at the “before and after” photos floating around, it’s obvious that they were taken under very different lighting conditions. The “before” photo was taken of the dress on a custom mannequin designed for it, & under lighting designed to hide imperfections (like how strip clubs use black lights everywhere so that you can’t see the C-section scars, cellulite, and bruises on the dancers - even when they’re on your lap.) The “after” photo was taken on a different mannequin, to keep
It from being folded in a box as much as possible, and it was being inventoried & inspected by Ripley’s insurance adjuster to make sure there was no additional damage exclusively as a result of Kim wearing it, which might change the value of the policy. It was purposely under harsh lighting for the inspection. Under those lights it’s very easy to see the existing damage, which doesn’t seem present in the first photo, under the lighting designed to hide it. Both Ripley’s & the insurance adjuster are on official record confirming that.
As far as I’m concerned, the dress was ruined when Kim squeezed herself into it. Perhaps not physically, but ruined nonetheless. Any tiny part of Marilyn that may have lingered inside that dress all these years was replaced by Kardashian in those 4 minutes 27 seconds. I wouldn’t care who wore that dress, I’d still be pissed about it. But somehow it pisses me off just a little more that it was a Kardashian, because i have no idea why they’re famous.

That photo of the dress being “damaged” was before she walked on the red carpet. The Ripleys confirmed they got the dress back just the way it was before. Nothing about the dress was altered. There’s an article in 2017 showing the damages are already there. She wore the replica for majority of the event. The real dress was only worn for pictures. In conclusion, you’re whining over nothing.

As far as things go, if you have money, power, and status you can do anything you want. Sickening isn't it?? I have never understood the fascination people have with this family. I do adore Marilyn Monroe who had actual talent. But, nothing in society is sacrosanct anymore. Some poster from another country was furious with me for posting my view that this wasn't such a great idea. I laughed and wished her happiness, love, and peace. I am entitled to my opinion and she is too--- though I wish her no ill will, but she didnt reciprocate my positive response to her. Instead I was told to shut and that brain hurt or some such thought. I don't hate this person, I feel sorry for her. People are so out of touch and can't take someone disagreeing with their icons. Did she think that was an appropriate thing to say or how to behave when you disagree with someon? Sad is all I could think. I wish no person ill will. It's more my surprise and dismay that this is what people do or how they react to anyone with an oppinion that doesnt agree with theirs. Has the human race sunk so low? We've reached a point where everyone is so damn afraid of offending another person that we don't communicare anymore. And it's asinine and disrespectful to me that the rich and entitled are fine with taking others' art or work for a sound byte to sell their product or grow their brand. Like when Pink Floyd was contacted to sell the rights to FB for one of their iconic songs. The band was so disgusted that FB wanted to offer them an insane amount of money, to own their song to sell people on FB. The recording artist told FB to shove it. His art and music is not for sale. Kim is in position to do a lot of good and I have heard she has done some. That's great. If I were in her position I would use all my influence to help young women get their civil rights back (Roe) and do everything to stop Humam trafficking. This whole business with a dress is just about her brand. Five minutes from now it will be another celebrity. It was Paris Hilton years ago. The faces change, but message is same. A few folks have all the power and money to make a real difference, but it becomes about a brand. It would be great to see them donate all of their money to real world problems. Then I'd be thrilled. But, the cycle doesn't change. And intention matters. I wish all the folks out there love and peace. We have a very short life and spend it making world a better place. Creature comforts are nice, but at the end of the day they are just things. It's the love and empathy we share with others that changes things.

The one who deserved a bulk of the blame is the people who were supposed to keep the dress. THEY were the ones to give permission for them to wear it. They could’ve said no and stuck to it.
