EXTENSIVE COMMENTARY FOLLOWING... ↴↴↴
Like the Dao De Jing, this is deep wisdom to ponder and meditate on, not mere text to consume.
And the world is always in great need of wisdom like this.
I hope I'm not playing into the hands of intellectual laziness by giving my view on things here. It's just that so many people cannot see the real thing without something artificial pointing the way. I guess it's skillful to apply that approach in very difficult cases, but it is always a tradeoff, taking away deeper understanding by doing some of the walking for the student.
Then again... there's always plenty more lessons to be learned. Big leaps aren't always feasible.
Some aspects are difficult to convey accurately, but I'll just approximate. After all, these words are just a help for gaining insight. There's no inherent truth in the words themselves.
- The student there makes the mistake of trying to perform a move, a kick. That is just the means to an end and indicates why Bruce Lee developed his Jeet Kune Do, his no-technique approach. Technique can distract from the aim and make inflexible. (And also eventually limit our full potential.)
- When he talks about emotional content, not anger, you might be confused, since anger is an emotion. But that emotion is not appropriate for achieving the goal in that exercise. (It is also further portrayal, form, not authentic. It should rather be called "aggression" there.) Bruce Lee is teaching about an emotional connection to people and things you interact with and to let that define a driving intention; to put the focus on the envisioned result and then make yourself a tool for its manifestation. Ideas and concepts about how to bring that about can become a distraction and make the path to the goal less than optimal. Lack of realization of this wisdom leads to martial arts students neglecting the philosophy side of the art ... about when to fight and why.
(How do you strike an opponent? ...By intending to.)
- The concentrating-on-the-finger theme is at least in part about the confusion of means and ends and turning the means into ends, which happens oh so often, especially in people who are more pragmatically than idealistically inclined. It's a huge topic with numerous types of manifestation in our society; far too complex to talk about in great detail here.
Let's just say that many people yearn for that heavenly glory but keep digging deeper into the finger trying to find it. Then things get more complex, when the real deal is quite simple. But logic cannot see emotion, and when the fear-based rational mind with its confusion schemes is in control, the world of pure emotion is unfathomable. Many people can only experience it by keeping it neatly separated from the rational world view, and external attempts to soften up that barrier and bring both worlds together will be met with resistance.
The courageous person will seek to face fears whenever they feel strong enough, while the fearful person will avoid this even when given plenty of help and shy away from the smallest of challenges as long as facing them doesn't become unavoidable.
We're all acting one way or the other depending on the situation. Remember your moments of courage and be inspired by them. With more people showing courage, it becomes easier for the fearful to find their courage, too. (Except maybe for those enslaved by convenience's allure.)
At least start the journey somewhere!
When you are fixating on the finger, you know your fear is in control of you.
( I have come to this conclusion: Perfection is 50% control. )
Message to everybody: Beware of taking on challenges that are too great and beware of shying away from challenges that are tiny. Be wise enough to see the difference. The mere act of asking yourself these questions in sincere pursuit of your personal truth helps you gain insight.
Whatever you do, you become better at it. (So choose your actions well.)
Life is a game about overcoming fears. And you are never alone in this game! Fear separates, love unites. Let's work together! (Or we will perish alone.)
P.S.: I recently heard a Bruce Lee quote that I can relate to a lot:
"A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a fool can learn from a wise answer."

What Bruce Lee teaches is not just martial arts, but Self Mastery
Beyond that is the transcendence of the self.
Eastern martial arts is still martial arts, and it can affirm a spiritual imbalance where the individual is overemphasized and seen as the foundation of providing common good, kinda like how capitalism claims that selfish motivation benefits the whole.
Another indication of this easy risk of imbalance is that Bruce Lee, who pushed the concept of eastern (=philosophical) martial arts to its limits, killed himself with it. So even though he helped promote some good things, we should also learn from his ultimate failure. His great ambitions in a self/idol-worshipping industry (movies) became his doom, and in a particularly ugly but telling way because he used (medical) drugs to cope with the obstacles in the path of his ambition.
True learners embrace this sacrifical lesson, too. We could say it was the last thing that Bruce Lee taught the world, and it put all his other teachings into a more enlightening context.

Yeah, they all had plenty of cross-pollination, so to speak. It's because of the Eastern philosophy. You could say the extreme philosophical antithesis to Eastern martial arts is Israeli krav maga. It doesn't get more 'Wild-Western' than that.
P.S.: I wrote a commentary on this years ago: dowlphinblog.wordpress.com/2015/08/15/krav-maga-breeding-the-worlds-most-deadly-cowards/
@@Dowlphin I agree. The concept of Martial Arts in the "Fight" within one's self on itself is a broader spectrum than just kick, punch, twist or break. It's a self awareness of one's own capabilities, to manage the physical, mental, emotional and there I say spiritual. Hence it is not just an art but a science, and a study of human Co-existence with one self and with everything else.

0:05 "Don't take your eyes off your opponent, even when you bow."
- Nice attention to detail.
Yep, although probably also because the master doesn't bow nearly as low as the student. In other situations he did bow blindly to an opponent, but a master knows when going against his teachings is alright. The student first has to learn the basics.
@@Dowlphin i wouldn't even say it's going against his teachings. It about understanding the principle behind a teaching, knowing WHY we shouldn't take our eyes off our opponent. When we understand the principle behind things, it frees us to make decisions rather than blindly following orders, blindly following technique.

"Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory." - Bruce Lee
That's the first thing which came to my mind after I started playing video games on my 4K TV.😂
Student: *Breathes
Bruce Lee: I’m fluent in over 6 millions forms of slapping your head
Ah, so THIS is why masters keep telling their students to focus on their breath! 😆
“What was that? An Exhibition? We need emotional content. Now try again!”
What did Bruce Lee mean by “Emotional Content?” He was describing the feeling of being totally present in your body and connected to your own life force. A spiritual life force that is the energy of creation. This force helps you become a human being from moment to moment. When you are creating emotional content, you are creating in awareness, openness and receptivity to everything around you. You are in a state of relating to your surroundings. You are not in isolation-you are connected.
“Don’t think, FEEL.”
Don’t pull yourself out of a real moment by thinking and intellectualizing. Stay in the moment and be totally present for the total experience.
Emotional content is also about the creation of art. Art is the communication of authentic feelings. We are all artists of our own lives. Bruce Lee believed that art is the work of enlightenment. And the origin of enlightenment comes from understating your own heart and living whole-heartedly.
Action step for this week: release yourself to spontaneous action when you’re inspired by your own spiritual life force.
Thank you so much for this! Awesome explanation

When he says that "you will miss out on all the glory", it reminded me of how people experience everything nowadays. Through the lens of their camera in their phone. Every time I go on holiday I just enjoy the present directly instead of watching it through a screen.
The Chinese are particularly deeply into this sad state, in part due to the culture, in part due to their very 'mental' education system. Vacation to them means seeking out good settings for shooting photos and then moving on. Can be stressful. Many photos need to be shot and shared on social media to show others how happy you are.
I did the same years ago. Went to Hawai'i for three months. Could have brought my camera/camcorder. Decided against it because it would be too distracting from the valuable experience to look for photo opportunities all the time. Plus carrying that thing around, keeping batteries charged, having to guard against theft. - It was supposed to be a spiritual journey, so no camera. And later, brief and appropriate opportunities to still make some enjoyable, creative photos offered themselves naturally.
@@Dowlphin True although I think there is a difference between snapshots and more contemplative photography. With the latter I remember locations very clearly since I would take the time to listen, look and feel what a location says to me before setting up a tripod and camera. Look at how the student kicks for the two times. His kicks are linear and too forward as well as very direct. Then the third kick is more fluid and natural, timed just perfectly but the kick itself isnt aiming at its target because as soon as the student thinks he needs too land his kick in the right spot he messes up. That goes for everything in the real world. Anyone ever had those moments when their doing something but then automatically start too think what exactly their doing in that moment and then they mess up? I think bruce was meaning to not think but in that moment just go with the flow and let whatever it is that your doing be done by itself without you having to think or worry about it because the work will be done with more easy timing, more fluidity, more easy feeling but when you start too think about what it is that your set out too do your movements become stiff, linear, straightforward, obvious, etc. So if your doing something dont worry about whether if your going to finish it perfectly or are going to get their rather feel that what your doing will be done all by itself by you going along with it.
The principle in an analogy: Imagine you got $1000 in your handbag and someone grabs it and tries to run with it. All your actions in that moment will be focused on the heavenly glory, not on the finger. xD
So basically ultra instinct haha!

Bruce was a extraordinary man. His philosophy is incredible!!! A genius!!!
Eh, he studied and learned from the best. How much he actually put those teachings into own practice might be hard to say. Some principles were very useful for his Jeet Kune Do, which took a lot from Wing Chun and such, but he is also the guy who couldn't find a proper work-life balance and killed himself through seeking external remedies to maintain his extreme path. - We could call it the inevitable business entanglements of being a big movie star. In the end that defeated him and 'capped his philsophy', thereby kinda implying retroactively that his style/system/approach wasn't sustainable.
Good thing it was a two minute lesson. At the going rate, kid would've been slapped a thousand times in a one hour session.
No 90 times

@@namuh5799 Totally unnecessary. Did you really think I was being literal when I said a thousand times?
What I really like about Mr. Lee was the fact even though he was so serious about his craft, he still had a great sense of humor.
Thanks for subtitle
It's weird I have known Bruce Lee for so many years but this is one of the few times I heard him speak.
Yeah, I think the first time I heard him speak was a voice bit from this scene in a WoW video compilation, and back then I wasn't even aware that was Bruce Lee.
"Don't concentrate on the finger
or you will miss all that heavenly glory "👏👏👏👏
When the student kick
bruce lee: emotional content
he kicks again
Bruce lee : emotional content not anger
He kicks again
Bruce lee: yes
Bruce lee : how did it feel
Student: let me think
Slap his head
Bruce lee: dont think feel
Whats his trying to teach us
U dont have time to think in a fight u have to feel ur opponent instead
Bruce lee: a finger pointing to the moon dont only look at the figer or u will miss all of the glory
Student : bows
Bruce lee : never take ur eyes of ur opponent even if ur bowing
The meaning is when u kick dont look at ur leg (finger) look at ur opponent (moon) or u will miss the kick or get punch and since u focused on ur leg instead of the opponenet
Never lay ur eyes off ur opponent
@brucelee
Thank you
