First Drive In 30+ Years!? OFCOURSE IT GOES BAD... 1955 Chevy Nomad Gasser

- The moment we've all been waiting for. Finally time to take this bucket bolts 1955 Chevy Nomad out on its first test drive. I have been meticulous with all the wiring and plumbing of fuel and brake lines.
So after all the countless hours over the gears it was time to go for a test drive. Can you guess how it went? Exactly! not well! This car did go the furthest its gone in many many years. Lots of tuning is still needed but we'll figure it out on the next one.
What do you guys think is wrong with it?

Hahaha its alright curly ur blond you can get away with it 😂😂

@@DDSpeedShop 😂😂😂
Better than your pile (of a 55).
I was waiting for Uncle Tony to let you have it for putting this Holly stuff in it.
Nothing to do with the problems you're having, but that headliner is driving me crazy! Lol 😂
Yea, I keep expecting to see a mouse head appear inside there at any time. 😊
If you had carburetors, you'd be home now 😊
Exactly!!! Technology has done nothing but screw-up the automotive world. He's building a 55 gasser.....Go Old School all the way.
My mother always told me if frogs had wings it wouldn't bump its ass every time it hopped
lol, a pair of Carrter quads will fix that!
I didn't read the instructions ... why does this not work? lol this sure is entertaining
I want to know more about these “brownies”. Dan was VERY happy after he had them.
Very happy 😁
😂same
The good brownies, mmmmmmm.
Special ingredients ha ha
Gave him more munchies.
The Holley absolutely requires it's own dedicated power! No splicing.
Dierectly to the battery
Best bet would to get home, open up the manual and go step by step to the end double checking all wiring connections.
From where it came from to where it is now is simply Amazing !!! Got to see it on the road finally. 😃 When you get the bugs worked out that car will be amazing. I still think you are a legend for bringing the Nomad back from the grave,😃
🎉 🎉 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 🎉 🎉
👍🗿
Thats why all my cars have carbs & points
Agreed Wayne
I appreciate that you show all the struggles. You’ll get it figured out and it will rip.
DD Speed Shop ???
Check for vacuum leaks. That efi setup should be looked at a tuner. I think you guys did a great job this far!!! The learn feature only gets so close. A good tuner will help iron out all the bugs. But I call it a win. DD speed shop
My favorite part of this video? The removal of the horn ring and the checking of the steering wheel nut by hand. 😅
And yes we've all been there🎉
Check your headliner… there might be a hole somewhere causing the problem
I love that your channel is plastered down the side for everyone to see hear and laugh ha ha
1 single 750 holley and down the road we go LOL!!! You guys make me laugh like crazy LOL!! I love your show
Anyone that gives you any grief over this car just doesn't get your style. Trust me. There's a ton of us that don't comment very often that do. Pretty much why we keep coming back. I can tell just by the looks on your face that set up surprised even you. That car is gonna be sick when you figure it all out. Be cool if VGG stopped by. He's run this set up and could probably help you get it to sing, That being said I myself have a place my heart for these Nomads. I don't think there is another car that has the same ominous stance and look to it without being an actual hearse. And still look like it has a pack of non filters rolled up in the sleeve. Peg sent me.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.. probably something simple you'll figure it out
I had a sniper, and never got it to work right. I even sent it back to Holley, and they gave it a clean bill of health. After 2 months of struggle I gave up and went back to carb. Couldn't be happier, and I'll never get stranded.
Hallelujah brother, amen!!
Just FYI, put your EFI trigger (switched hot) on a relay to isolate it.. Snipers in particular are sensitive to electrical interference, and isolating its power from the rest of the car’s electrical system will help.
more grounds the better, power MUST be clean on separate circuit without nothing else. Fuel pressure is critical must be within the range in in manual. Make sure to save data in steps in the manual.
more grounds the better..plus shielding electrically all data signal wires will help
Dan, wrongway here !!! Been watchin "future Dan " work on the brick you were gifted by VGG!!! P.S. you get this Nomadd figured
out !!!
Your mags look a lot better! They fit the look of the NOMAD.
needs cragars.
Go back to Carbs and simple like uncle Tony said. Keep it simple. Love your channel 😊
I think you’re 80% there, you and Danny.
You folks will sort it out shortly but get it aligned first.
You have to teach it who the boss is by giving it the old dulcich bang shift treatment 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Haha its coming
@@DDSpeedShop I would expect no less sir
Good job maintaining your cool in such a challenging situation!! You'll get it all figured out.
I've done several of those sniper systems, all worked well except for one, tour getting EMI interference. That coil being mounted by wiring can cause it, you have to be very careful running any of the snipers by noisy components, alternator, distributor, coil, power wires etc...hope that helps 😀
I agree, it’s likely “noise” from the coil or plug wires running across or near the Holley wiring.
This I agree with
Had a similar problem with Sniper EFI on a 396" L-78 in my 150 utility sedan..got it tuned and distributor walked and backfired through the carb..after retiming was pinging like crazy..now have a blown headgasket..I originally built the engine in1979 for a 10:90 57 chev..never replaced the rear main and am now looking forwardt o pulling the engine to replace the seal..no one said it would be easy.
Your having alot of the common problems I've seen with the holley sniper system. I'd take the time and go over the instructions and learn system again. I'm sure you'll get it straighten out and then you guys will have a awesome time enjoying your hotrod!!
I feel your pain. Some times everything feels good but you just end up heading back home because things go south under the hood. You have done a great job with the nomad, keep working out the bugs.
Dan,
Always run the power for the Sniper computer directly to the battery using it's own wire. Never tie into the hot wire going to the coil.
Might want to use a switch on it.
"When you are pissing off the old lady, that means you have a hot rod"! Quote for the books!! LOL!! Love it!
Hang in there Dan I have no doubt you will figure it out. It’s new to you it will be a learning curve. 👍😎✌️
Dedicated constant hot and ground directly to the battery. Its shown in the diagram and written with words 😂 sweet rig brother!
I installed a Holley Sniper on my -71 Camaro SS 396 and did it EXACTLY according to Holley’s documentation and it works absolutely flawlessly
This is why I prefer old school one wire to the distributor , one wire to the alternator, one wire to the starter.
You'll figure it out! Don't sweat it and keep at it. I love your videos. So inspiring
It's so funny Dan, you complain about the smallest things that don't really matter, oh I was inconvenienced......uuuuggghh, like Charlie Brown. You have it so good that the slightest inconvenience then whine and scream like a roaster. Just be thankful that you have an amazing Father with good upbringing, no real problems to worry about, like dying in war. Once you go through war everything else is easy peezy. I may be harsh, but just relax and adapt. Thanks.
Put a elderbrock on it call it a day 😅
The ever illusive Rad Cap, I love it.
Besides the bugs ,it’s awesome seeing your hard work pay off.. enjoyed watching your journey..
Good morning from Athens Georgia!
Give urself a break Dan, like ya said technology! As it learns you will learn more and more as well! As you've already been doing! Keep on keeping on! Love ur channel!
I feel your pain. So glad to see you’re keeping it real.
As said by others, sniper wants clean switched power. Not on the coil. Also isolate the green and purple twisted pair from all other wires. I added some ferrite cores to most the inputs to get rid of the interference.
Only thing electronic I am going to have in my 55 that I am building is an HEI distributor. I'm sure the EFI system will be great once you get it figured out. Just not the system for me. Always enjoy seeing what you are working on. Keep Mobbin'.
Dan did you see what happened to Brent at halfass garage--Huge fire-everything total loss--VERY SAD !!!
Unbelievable. What a nice guy he is too.
What? When?
@@mrbill8542 yeah I saw I just went and watched it. Sucks
@@ogt92fromthe1step9 I wish we could start a go fund me for him
@@mrbill8542 there is a pinned link in the description of that video that is started for him
It went bad? Im shocked!!!
Right?
Love it. Works for five minutes, and we're good to go!
Hello again from New Brunswick!!!! Love seeing the Nomad!! Can't wait to see more on its r build up!!
The problem is that if you use bailing wire you also have to use chewing gum to attach something else. they work in conjunction with each other! This will be sorted in the end, neat car!
Bubble gum is an American thing. In Canada we use Duck tape for just about everything.
Duck tape????😁
Yes, "duck tape". Not to be confused with the inferior "duct tape". Made primarily from ground duck lips

😂 10-4 guess ya use babies to make baby oil.
@@kerrypierre9494 survives the cold
Luck is on your side brother finding that wrench proves it ps nice ride
Don’t know if this would be relevant to your problem but........
Years ago a friend put a computerized TPI on his Hotrod. It ran like a scalded dog until it hit operating temp, then would shutdown like he turned it off at the switch. It would not start until it cooled down a bit, then started and ran great, til the temp got up again. He couldn’t figure it out and finally got in touch with a local Chevy dealer mechanic who told him when wiring it up all the connections had to be SOLDERED CONNECTIONS. Seems typical wiring connectors was causing a degradation in the voltage from the heat, enough that the computer didn’t like the flux in voltage and would shutdown the engine. He took it apart, soldered all the wiring connections, and never had another problem after that.
Not saying it’s your problem but the computerized systems like you have can be finicky. Hope you figure it out! 👍😎
Great video man youll figure it out
Have a great Sunday y’all bad days good days just good to see y’all. Where is the convertible it’s not raining the other 55 is there. Just ride next week will be better
Go back to the spoke front wheels please
You need to wrap the engine wiring harnesses with RFI shielded braiding and double check all of your grounds within the whole system..... Check both of those & retry I will bet its going to help
Front tires are screaming for mercy.😂
As a mechanic you'll make a great carpenter one day
Hey Man I'm very impressed with your humility. I'm sure 99% other Utube builders edit out their blunders !!
Special brownies? 😊
hopfully you're not chasing gremlins for too long. Thats a sick build and i'd like to see you and the ole lady enjoy it.
Hang in there Dan you'll get it.
good job!
Congratulations Dan. It has been a long journey.
I wish I could go on Power Tour this year, I live almost dead center of the route they are taking (Charlotte area) but we had planned our vacation before the route was made public and we can't change our plans.
We did power tour in 2014. My wife enjoyed it which I did not expect.
Good luck on the trip.
Good job,Dan. 🤔maybe some more learning will work. 😳 another puzzle to solve. Yay!
I too, have long hair worn loose. I have found that getting it caught in the belt, while running, "tidys up" the engine area real quik. Even better if your gold chain goes in too. Rock on DD,,,K,,,
You'll get it
Dani I do the same thing with my wife. Sometimes it's just nice to not have the woman you love hear the things you say when you're Really mad or frustrated 😂😂 best for you gals that way
You got this!! It’s bad ass brother
Love it and you will get the bugs out I’m sure
Oh that's one badd Nomadd, nice work getting it done
Any issues I ever had with stand alones were battery, ground or voltage related. 5x's good luck buddy you've still come a long way with that car!!
It's awesome to see it out on the road. No experience with sniper so can't help but man it'll be sweet once ya get the kinks worked out
Everything I've seen involving these systems is like you've said it absolutely needs clean voltage! I have NO DOUBT you will get it sorted!
You'll get er figured out ... sure sounds mean awesome job Dan
IF i remember right holly has to have a clean 12v right to the batt not off the alt or any other source
Sounds good
Glad its driving...just work out the last few issues and your golden
Every new build has it's share of problems. The electronics will be interesting to sort out. Rock On, Dan & Dani.
part of the fun with old cars is they are analog. thumbs up
You are a patient man Dan! I would have torn the snipers off and bolted a Double pumper on it and been done with it after the first lap around the block! Then again, I haven't given up on my Hilborns yet either. You'll sort it out! BTW, those Real Deal Halibrands...Wow! Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing it all resolved soon! Take care!
i have always understood you get on the road and just drive for it to learn. not short spurts
It almost sounds like a timing or cross wire problem, or a vacuum leak, but it's great to it see on the road, just a few more adjustments, then it will be cruising time!👍😎
its probably all of these things. start with timing. work from there. could also try a known good ignition module and coil.
Love it wish it was mine
I went with the jegs bandit series and love it! Zero issues! First start was like it had been on for years.
Judging by that action I’m feeling you’ve got electrical interference.
Hope you get it figured out. Having the similar issues on my 55.
i felt your frustration on the test drive
I have faith in you Dan yall get it I am pretty sure you have to drive it for awhile and do not dis connect the battery I'm sure once you drive it more and it's fixed it will have all the information logged.
Clean power
sweet mate
Hello. Great videos. Check the fuel pressure. Good Luck. Glenn
sounds good when it runs
This things Mint, even hen being towed back!
Nothing like pole vaulting a car with the driveshaft! I saw that once many years ago lol. Hopefully you'll get all the bugs worked out quickly and the rest is smooth sailing! Such a cool car! Thanks for sharing! 😁👍
Thanks!
I'm with you. Give me a good carb and I'm happy
Was really looking forward to the opel build.....
Had a Sniper setup a few years back, dont regret going back to a carb.
Ok Dan, I’ve been thinking hard about what’s wrong with the Nomad. My many years of hot rodding has given me a vast knowledge of troubleshooting these quirky issues your having with the car and I’ve come to the conclusion that the nut behind the wheel is loose. Just fix that and you’re golden. 👌
Next time you hit the throne, take the instructions with you. Worst case scenario, use them to wipe.
Hello Dan
You’ll get it lined out I’m sure. Those front wheels are growin on me. Didn’t know about them at first but I like em.
