Are Earasaids a Fashion Statement? Can you wear an Earasaid modernly?

  • Would YOU wear an earasaid outside of a renaissance fair or history event?
    The earasaid is starting to enjoy a revival in street fashion; just as the Great Kilt is. Rocky and Erik go over the trend as USA Kilts is seeing it unfold.
    From our website:
    What is an earasaid?
    A traditional draped garment found in women's’ highland dress. Typically consisting of two to four yards of tartan material wrapped around the waist and/or shoulders, with some left loose for covering the head. The Earasaid was typically pleated around the waist and held in place with a belt, just like a man's great kilt. Often it was also pinned by a brooch at the chest.
    This utilitarian yet elegant garment came into being in the late 1500's and stayed relatively mainstream until the late 1740's. It emerged from the leine and brat (cloak) that was worn by highland women from the 1300's to 1500's. It was during the early 1500's that the feile mhor (great kilt) or feile breacan (belted plaid) began to emerge and gain popularity among Scottish men. This led to Scottish Highland women designing their own style of belted plaid ... the Earasaid.
    Now the earasaid is enjoying a revival in street fashion. Rocky and Erik go over the trend as USA Kilts is seeing it unfold.

    I think this is part of a bigger niche trend called historybounding. Incorporating historical or historically inspired clothing into regular street wear. Edwardian, medieval, whatever. I think cottagecore is sort of a variation on this.

      @christinajackson2662 Před 2 lety +6

      Yay, another historybounder 👋! I was coming here to say this, and I also think there’s a movement towards being more comfortable in daily wear as a result of so many working from home and being liberated from the more defined rules of professional attire. I myself gave up pants and now wear long wool skirts with a slip or chemise under even on office days. I actually look even more put together than before, am more comfortable, and happier to feel I can express myself more than ever.
      I’ll have to look into earasaids, they sound like a great addition to my wardrobe!

    Inquiring minds would love to see a video of options of how to wear an erasaid... and not just static pictures but sort of... how-to type tutorial? I watched Fandabi Dozi's video of where he showed how to use/wear a great kilt in various ways and it was really cool.. but I feel like there are other ways women could wear the earasaid. And I totally get that there aren't really any rules but some starting ideas or how-to bits for those of us who need a guideline for what we want to achieve would be really great. Bonus points if you can have women of different body sizes at least model? I think an erasaid would be a really fun and unique accessory but as a plus sized person, I am always afraid to make the investment without getting some sort of idea of how it might work for me.

    The show Outlander is also creating a large fan base of people into traditional Scottish dress. They have large festivals and conventions just like the reenactors have their renaissance fairs.

    Last Christmas, my husband got me one from you guys in Buchanan Hunting and I wear it ALL the time on cool winter days here in San Diego. I alternate it with my Buchanan Antique Ruana. Looks awesome belted with jeans and a turtleneck or with a skirt or dress. I love it! It's really warm and unique. I also love the powerful and primitive (as you said) way I feel linked to something ancient --my ancestors and culture. I agree. I get sick of a lot of modern fashion, etc. LOVE the Earsaid! Merry Christmas!!

  • @drrd4127
    @drrd4127 Před 2 lety +2

    I think Ruana's are more common in Scotland. You can get a Tartan Ruana from the shops easy in Scotland. Lots of woman wear Ruana's for their weddings too. But I do love Earasaids and would love for it to come back!
    The Scottish winters are brutal and sometimes modern Jackets just aren't that warm, wool wrappings are great.

    As a Scottish person it's so frustrating that here's a USA company giving more info on the earasaid than any other youtube channel. Especially since I've never heard a Scottish person say the word and I have no idea how Americanized your pronunciation is.

    Been watching Fandabi Dozi, who said he got one of his plaids for the equivalent of $54. For five meters. Granted, it was 11 oz and had to have lanolin added, but still, that was the single most Scottish thing I've ever heard in the modern era. My dad really wants a great kilt to add to his survival gear, but we cannot find a plaid in the width we need, except on websites like yours for multiple hundreds of dollars. So I'm afraid that in the end, we won't be able to be as Scottish-ly frugal as we would like, and will probably have to spring for a nice great kilt in one of our tartans (I wish you guys had MacKenzie weathered in 16 oz). And if my dad finally manages to bag himself a great kilt, I'm totally saving up to invest in an earasaid for myself.

    I would definitely wear an Earasaid down as an overskirt, perfect over ankle length skirts. Downside, in my country there's only a couple of businesses who sell great kilts, and they don't sell Earasaids. They can't cut it down to women's size apparently, and the fabric weight mighr need to be different, but they're only vendors, not kiltmakers.

  • @saotomesakura8648
    @saotomesakura8648 Před rokem +1

    you mentioned, that the earasaid has different yardage... so it's different size from great kilt? do I, as a woman, have to look for an earasaid, or can i get a great kilt (because there are much more information for kilts and more options to buy) and wear it as an earasaid(below knee with skirt or pants underneath) ir is that a no no? Will that be weirdly propotioned because it is different size?

  • @blackthumbedq

    I have (I think from you guys) a length of Army tartan. How should I finish it (by hand) - I'm looking at it as the long rectangular arisaid with no stitching but on the edges.
    (To wear in lots of different ways/places: Grandfather Mtn, The Viking Experience, renaissance faires, various Celtic events, Albannach concerts, some vets groups....)
    Thanks.
