- All sounds were created using feedback on vintage equipment as shown in this video: • Between Silence and Ch... It's the same ambient as there at the end, but here it's the full version.
So glad you're back. I can't remember seeing anybody use an SU700 for anything but the odd vintage gear demo in the CZcams era. You wield it like a weapon.
Thanks! I'm doing a full track on SU700 now for 2048 subscribers special.. don't miss it! It's capable but very limited machine at the same time.
Let along sample using 8bit
8 bits sound surprisingly good on this machine..
@@SkinnyVampiress I know I run samples thru the su700 sampling using 8bit I love the sound of this I even sample full finished songs in 8bit on it really nice
@@jamesjr2550 yeah! The weak point of 8 bit is noise, unless if you actually want it (: I usually normalize to 100% or even to 110% or more if it still sounds good. And then truncate it to 8 bits. Combining this with artificial release (around 102-105 or so) so you don't hear as much noisy tails of a sample, and some reverb on top... and 8 bit sounds almost as good as 16. slight hi freq roll-off is also helpful.
Now that was a satisfying listen! The only thing that would’ve made it better would be some dirty drums coming in to transform this to Trip Hop!
Thanks! I agree, I just don't have enough sound sources to sample some decent drums.. And I don't want to use just some samples from the internet. But I always wanted to create some interesting drums, it is on my roadmap in the future.
This is Killer. Amazing jam/edit! My Fav and only bit of gear. 700 is a total chalkboard... You can go absolutely anywhere with it... Did you get usb drive or flying on floppies? Much love ✌️💎
Thank you! I still use floppies and kind of hate them because they are so unreliable, but for now this is all I have :)
Almost a love letter to the su700.
Great worked out clip.
Thank you :) I love su700, it is limited but very special anyway
What an incredible piece of gear. I love how it sounds. And you nailed it, great video and great track!
Thanks!^^
This sounds rather spooky, it's amazing.
cool! thank you 🎶
Just found via a random SU700 Search.
This is great!
Thank you! :)
I really adore this. It’s incredible.
Can I get a permission to use this in my (non-commercial) game? I will give proper credits to your work.
of course, why not :) what game are you making?
@@SkinnyVampiressGTA 6
@@saren6538 sure, cool =)
this is pretty cool... didnt listen very closely, but what I am hearing, given the device, is intriguing...
thanks!
I like the dark touch of this composition.... well done, very blade runnerish ;-)
Thank you so much 🎶💾 I love bladerunner ^^
WTF is this black magic? 🔥🔥🔥
Really awesome work!!! WOuld like to own one of these machines some day.
Thank you!! I wish they had a normal sequencer. But you can only sequence one pattern, only one! wtf Yamaha? This is what killed this machine. So think twice before buying :) Anyway, I love this unit, even with all it's limitations.
@@SkinnyVampiress Well thats weird. You can sequence it with some other device i think so?
@@breiskapenthouston9674 yeah but it will not play chromatically, you can only sequence 16 samples (because 16 midi channels) and they will trigger as one-shots. If you want to play a melody for example, then you need to send Pitch CC information but it is not enough, you also need to send pitch correction for every other note. So it requires complicated sequencing. And even then samples will be only monophonic. Add very crappy floppy disk as storage media - and you get the reason why SU700 is not very popular.. SCSI adapter with something like scsi2sd will make it much better, but adapter boards are rare and expensive.
@@SkinnyVampiress Thats sad to hear cos this is such a cool machine. Maybe best looking samplergroovebox that i know.
@@breiskapenthouston9674 exactly! It also sounds really good. Very pleasant and sweet, not like modern samplers. I also like how everything is designed here - almost no menu diving. And big VFD screen is so cool and retro-futuristic. But I had to add brightness control because by default it is too bright if you like to make music at night.
If someone could make alternative firmware and add decent sequencer - it will be an MPC killer. Sadly Yamaha crippled this unit, but they learned the lesson and released RS7000 then, with very powerful seq.
really happy to see someone doing something different with this machine! What's going on with that calculator at 7:55 ?
thannks! it is actually not a calculator anymore (: I'm using it as a 'midi keyboard' in this video, but it is DIY sequencer for su700 and other stuff. I don't use any of it's functionality here other than midi kb with midi note to pitch CC conversion so I can play samples chromatically.
@@SkinnyVampiress woah, that's awesome - you got any more details on that? Sounds like a fun hack!
@@paulcarboneNY I'll make a video about it in the future.. but if you interested in how to make SU700 play notes - you need to send midiCC for "pitch" control instead of just note numbers. This will allow you to play +\- 2 octaves. But this will work only for every even notes, odd notes will be slightly off. If you control pitch with midi, it can only set +4 or +6, and you need +5 for example (or +15 and so on). To make it work you can set LFO to square, speed to zero and apply lfo->pitch to +3 for these notes. It will rise the pitch to make these notes in tune.
Very nice!!! 👏
Thanks :)

I love how Stranger Things has helped bring back appreciation of dark 80's Synth sounds and songs👍
You've got a whole new audience waiting to discover your music now !
Vangelis would love this track 😆
As always your camerawork is perfection 😆🍺👍
Thanks! But I don't think Stranger Things audience will discover my music any time soon.. because it is completely different niches, YT algorithms work based on products mostly (at least for small youtubers), and so 99,9% of my viewers and subscribers are synth guys 😀
It is a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. For example, if I like more "dark" stuff in music, especially distorted instruments or inharmonic content - most musicians don't actually like it. But people who like and potentially would enjoy this kind of music will never ever find my channel. They need to discover me somehow, but I don't see how it can happen when everything is product-driven.. they don't google "volca keys" or "korg m1" for example..
This is why I am trying to do "tutorial" kind of videos now, to get more potential audience, because YT don't give a **** about music - they even trying to move the music away from youtube.. they created "artist topics" where albums are uploaded automatically, and you can not even comment on them. And you can listen to them through special site, not on youtube. With no comments, no channels, no live people or conversation... Clearly youtube have something against music now, haha 😁
But.... anyways this is how everything works now. So we have to adapt to new reality and do what we can.
Великолепно, как и всегда. Не останавливайтесь. 🙏

I got one of the su700 25 years ago or so, and its been gathering dust the last 20... I keep it cause I think that someday I can use to do something interesting, maybe like this.... or not.
su700 is cool but very limited, and people usually say they don't use it much. I still need to finish my sequencer to control this thing, (modified calculator you can see on the right) with clever midi control su700 can become somewhat powerful device.
@@SkinnyVampiress I didnt see videos on your DIY sequencer? why does it look familiar to me? could the firmware of the su700 be hacked to open it up? I think the rs7000 has the same sampler, and it can play samples chromatically....
on the other hand, I see how the manufactures instead of perfecting one device, release new instruments to keep us buying their stuff...🙄
@@xisotopex I will make a video about my sequencer in the future, for now I need to finish hardware (maybe add another display to show more information). And the sequencing code is not complete yet.
The firmware of the su700 could be hacked, but I don't know much about it. The whole hacking and disassembly with learning specific CPU assembly language is weeks and weeks of work, if not years.
It is also not user friendly for many people because the firmware stored on the big parallel EPROM, which should be UV-erased. So you need specific programmer to flash it, it is hard to find parallel programmer these days, for example I had to built one myself... But if somebody will add sequencing capability to su700 it could become an MPC killer for sure :)
@@SkinnyVampiress yamaha should release the code for the firmware...
@@xisotopex it would be cool, but in reality it will never happen... manufacturers want to sell new stuff as always. By the way, I think if they release updated version with SD card for samples and a decent sequencer - it could become very cool sampler. But they need to keep old a/d d/a converters for sound, and this custom vfd display - not trivial task for 2022 but can be done.
would like to know the workflow... was this done using the component pieces and then assembled in the DAW? whats doing what, to whom, here?
Well... it was done in real time with su700, no DAW or editing. 9 samples (8 on the first bank, and 1 on the second). the sample on the second bank is a bass line, and it plays all the time. So I never switch to the second bank. On the first bank I have some random sampled feedbacks from no-input mixer, mics and guitar pedals. And I just play them manually and change some parameters like pitch and cutoff sometimes.
And there is also a piano-like sample, which is somewhere on second bank too, I never change any parameters on it while playing (because it's on bank 2 page). I play this sample with midi, using DIY sequencer (on the right) as a midi keyboard. It translates note numbers to midi CC, because by default su700 can't play chromatically. The sample itself is a short piece of a guitar feedback actually.
Everything is live improvisation.. All samples are in 8/11.025 and they fit on single floppy, I used about 1,2 mb.
@@SkinnyVampiress I really like the composition... what is that DIY sequencer? the form factor looks very familiar.
I still have the su700.... playing samples on it chromatically, I suppose you would have to re sample over the pads to get some semblance of a scale since it wont play chromatically? I wish they would release the firmware publicly, some genius could do something pretty cool... same with the RS7000
@@xisotopex you can play chromatically with sample pitch, but it is somewhat tricky... so if you remember pitch can go from -127 to 127, slightly more than 4 octaves. But when you send midi CC to pitch, it can only increment in 2 steps at a time. So what I did - not only I translated note value to midi CC pitch information, but I also set LFO to square and speed to 0, so LFO now act as a constant level. With lfo->pitch I can now fine-tune the pitch of the note. Even note numbers don't need this adjustment, but odd notes should be tuned. This is what my sequencer does for su700. It is still limited - monophonic, no LFO and only 2 octaves up and down, but it works..
