They all shred but it's always good to see what happens when Guthrie gets going. I still listen to Joe and he's one of my favorites but Guthrie is just so exciting to watch because he is just so insanely good.
My thought was the exact opposite. All technical no feel. Can play a bunch of styles but no unique voice of his own. As much as I love Vai I wish he wasn't always interrupting the G who improvs before him.
He was holding back, he's extremely modest (or shy if you will) in this kind of situations, but he's actually amazingly talented, I would prefer to have his knowledge above the other 2.
Guthrie is about the fairest person I've ever known. We were at a jam in the Bassment in Chelmsford about 2003 and I had a guitar playing friend with me. He asked Guthrie questions about various guitarists. G3? After a bit Guthrie said, "I am aware of your Satrianis and Vais and so on. Listen to Jeff Beck." That clinched something for me: a good, kind guy, makes excellent coffee, a cracking cup of tea, chops galore if and if he feels they might be important, but - and shouldn't be surprised really - a music lover first. If he rekts these guys, that's a judgment call for you. He'll listen to drums for hours. Djembe for example. "You Had It Coming" confined him to his headset for days.

I think he can, It's just that Guthrie has a different feel while executing that kind of tapping arpeggios and sounds more impressive. Also his right hand technique is different, he uses way more picking than Vai who is a more legatto guitar player ... so as a result Guthries notes sound more percussive and faster. I love and respect these 3 guys, but to my ears Guthrie style sounds more fresh and dynamic with all of those chromatic scales and percussive picking in his style.
Vai isn't "jealous". This isn't a competition. Satch and Vai invite all these guys because they want to share good music - not see who can play "the best". These guys ALL have their place and they are all VERY, VERY good players. Who could sit there and play the fastest 64th note runs at 150 BPM with some crazy pattern? Mayabe Govan. Maybe whoever practiced the most. I have respect for all of these guys.

Yo, if you like that type of shredding you should definitely check out Fredrik Thordendal from Meshuggah, hes usually chugging a crazy polyrhythm but when the dude solos its magical. His solos are a lot like Allan Holdsworth. Check the song Dancers to a Discordant System by Meshuggah, one of my favorite solos ever starts at the 6:27 mark in that song. That was such brilliant musicianship. I usually can't handle Vai, but that just really worked. Govan might just be the best electric guitar player ever. How can you be so fluent in so many styles and techniques and shuffle them on the fly? Just amazing
The same as all great improvisers...Because he doesn't look it as being fluent in all these different styles but only being fluent and trying his best to master his own style, drawing his inspirations and influences from other genres with ultimate goal in mind to further expand and refine his own style ;)
That's why Vai and Satriani haven't really progressed for decades. They perfected their own unique sound and they've just been banking on it for years, but somebody is gonna expose your flaws at some point. Same with Eddie Van Halen and Kirk Hammet.
Everytime I see Guthrie play it just reminds me how important it is to know everything there is to know about your guitar, he's the only guitar player I've seen that's made it his mission to learn everything possible about the guitar as an instrument, he's just on another level.

Three amazing guitarists having an absolute blast playing together with more talent in their respective pinkies than 99% of the chart garbage that pollutes the airwaves,and surprise,surprise!!! the trolls are out comparing one guitarist against another and calling them dickheads and douche bags. Joe and Steve have done more to promote guitar music in their 40+ years in the business than any other guitarist,and totally deserve all the accolades they've received. Guthrie is the new kid on the block and probably grew up listening to those two,secretly hoping that one day he would have the pleasure of sharing a stage with them. He is a fantastic talent with an uncanny ability to play in the style of many of the guitar greats. Why can't we all learn to enjoy these rare gatherings of virtuoso musicians,and drop the" he's the best" shit that plagues the comments section of these clips?
They are 3 excellent musicians but the premise of this gig, based on the audience it attracts, means they create an awful racket for a bit over 11 minutes. I'm sure all 3 of them much prefer when they get the opportunity to play music.

I've seen Guthrie play and as a guitar player since 13 he has really upped the game. His ability to flow from one style and technique to the next is bar none! Joe and Steve are extremely great and are really the founders of shred guitar playing, but Guthrie has taking it to a whole new level! I love them all! But Guthrie, man that's a whole lot of bet you can't play this and be humble about it the whole time:)

Vai seems insecure next to Govan. It must be strange to be a long-acknowledged guitar god and be confronted with someone who is on a whole other level from you. This really isn't a knock on Vai who is an incredible guitarist, as it is praise for Govan, whose mastery of the instrument is total.

Kurt loved plenty of bands that shred just as much as these guys. I feel like he was just one of those people who disparaged accomplished guitarists and arrogant to cover up his lack of any real skill; the argument has been used tenfold.
orion681 Nirvana was a step of the ladder for me becoming a fan of these guys, but Kurt was a huge cunt at times. He thought he was some sort of independent artist from a local scene when instead he was just as big as the big hair metal guys and still proceeded to start shit with them. He was a great songwriter, and i still enjoy nirvana's music but as a person i don't necessarily agree with even 25%of the shit he said or did outside the music

If you have ever read and seen interviews about what these concerts are about, the concerts are not just for you, or us, it is for them too! They like to have fun, and they sat around and decided to do this song, so f'n what? don't like it? move on, they are not losing sleep over it:) They share licks and just have the best time they feel like having. Yo, if you like that type of shredding you should definitely check out Fredrik Thordendal from Meshuggah, hes usually chugging a crazy polyrhythm but when the dude solos its magical. His solos are a lot like Allan Holdsworth. Check the song Dancers to a Discordant System by Meshuggah, one of my favorite solos ever starts at the 6:27 mark in that song.

That was such brilliant musicianship. I usually can't handle Vai, but that just really worked. Govan might just be the best electric guitar player ever. How can you be so fluent in so many styles and techniques and shuffle them on the fly? Just amazing
The same as all great improvisers...Because he doesn't look it as being fluent in all these different styles but only being fluent and trying his best to master his own style, drawing his inspirations and influences from other genres with ultimate goal in mind to further expand and refine his own style ;)
That's why Vai and Satriani haven't really progressed for decades. They perfected their own unique sound and they've just been banking on it for years, but somebody is gonna expose your flaws at some point. Same with Eddie Van Halen and Kirk Hammet.
Having your own style is not a flaw but the most important thing a player should be striving for !

Everytime I see Guthrie play it just reminds me how important it is to know everything there is to know about your guitar, he's the only guitar player I've seen that's made it his mission to learn everything possible about the guitar as an instrument, he's just on another level.

Three amazing guitarists having an absolute blast playing together with more talent in their respective pinkies than 99% of the chart garbage that pollutes the airwaves,and surprise,surprise!!! the trolls are out comparing one guitarist against another and calling them dickheads and douche bags. Joe and Steve have done more to promote guitar music in their 40+ years in the business than any other guitarist,and totally deserve all the accolades they've received. Guthrie is the new kid on the block and probably grew up listening to those two,secretly hoping that one day he would have the pleasure of sharing a stage with them. He is a fantastic talent with an uncanny ability to play in the style of many of the guitar greats. Why can't we all learn to enjoy these rare gatherings of virtuoso musicians,and drop the" he's the best" shit that plagues the comments section of these clips?

They are 3 excellent musicians but the premise of this gig, based on the audience it attracts, means they create an awful racket for a bit over 11 minutes. I'm sure all 3 of them much prefer when they get the opportunity to play music.

I've seen Guthrie play and as a guitar player since 13 he has really upped the game. His ability to flow from one style and technique to the next is bar none! Joe and Steve are extremely great and are really the founders of shred guitar playing, but Guthrie has taking it to a whole new level! I love them all! But Guthrie, man that's a whole lot of bet you can't play this and be humble about it the whole time:)

Vai seems insecure next to Govan. It must be strange to be a long-acknowledged guitar god and be confronted with someone who is on a whole other level from you. This really isn't a knock on Vai who is an incredible guitarist, as it is praise for Govan, whose mastery of the instrument is total.

orion681 Nirvana was a step of the ladder for me becoming a fan of these guys, but Kurt was a huge cunt at times. He thought he was some sort of independent artist from a local scene when instead he was just as big as the big hair metal guys and still proceeded to start shit with them. He was a great songwriter, and i still enjoy nirvana's music but as a person i don't necessarily agree with even 25%of the shit he said or did outside the music

Weird how Satch took complete joy in GG's playing, but Vai barely even acknowledged his presence. Wonder if it was like this backstage, as well.
Noticed that too. If vai isn’t the center of attention he seems lost. Satch on the other hand knows how good GG is and most likely I think they all believe he is better then they are, but satch is ok with that. Satch made his mark long ago and was a pioneer of the guitar industry.

If you have ever read and seen interviews about what these concerts are about, the concerts are not just for you, or us, it is for them too! They like to have fun, and they sat around and decided to do this song, so f'n what? don't like it? move on, they are not losing sleep over it:) They share licks and just have the best time they feel like having. Of course like most things, music is subjective, these jams are about exploring and obviously don't please everyone, don't you think if any of them didn't want to be there, would they stand for a full concert and play? lighten up folks....or not.....
