    You have repeatedly proven to me that speakers and cabinets are such huge part of any amplifiers sound. Makes picking a speaker/cab even more daunting.

      I've found the pairing makes all the difference. I generally hate G12T75s, I tried them with a 50 watt JCM 900 SL-X head, an Ampeg VL1002, Bugera 1990 and even a JCM900 High Gain Dual Reverb and never liked them. However, when I plugged a JCM2000 DSL head into them, I really liked them (so I kept the head). It's really not an easy task!!!

      Nemo Alicunde that can be very difficult when time and money is an issue. I'm about to build my cabinet out of my old combo, so not much choice in cab per day, but speakers... so many choices.

    • @odgeUK
      @odgeUK Před 7 lety +9

      I've been down the speaker wormhole, don't do it. You will find something you like about EVERY speaker you try, whether it's the low end of the G12-75 or the agressive mids of the Greenbacks, or the clarity of the G12H or the sweetness of the G12-65. It's impossible to choose a cab that covers it all, and who can store eight 4x12s! I'm currently running 2x G12-65 in a 2x12 Marshall cab and although I know what other speakers have to offer, I have to just build my rig around that cab and EQ accordingly. Having said that, I do have another 2x12 with Greenbacks in, for when the mood takes me! lol

      The JCM900 to me is one of the most underrated Marshalls. I love it and the only thing you should pay attention to is a proper treble adjustment. It has a lot treble. One second point is that this amp is made to sound good in a band context rather than in your living room. It is a fantastic live amp.

    great demo Johan, I have a 2203 & 4100 and G12m65's in my 1960A cab & G12T75's in the B cab. The 900 loves both especially at high volume however for low volume the G12M65's are a little nicer.
    The problem with most people that dislike the 900 is they play them with the master vol low with full gain, these amps need to be turned up to get the power section working....they become a different animal then

    I normally put your videos on in the background while I clean or exercise. I was cleaning and I sprinted back to the TV when I heard the tone at 1:58. Sometimes I think I like the JMP just because they're semi-rare here in America, but even when I don't realize what I'm hearing I think "oh my god, that tone is amazing", then find out later it was a JMP.

    I just bought a JCM900 model 4100 dual reverb, partly because of you and partly because it was cheap - around $380. I had a JCM900 of some kind many years ago,
    which I didn´t like at all, but now I try again. It has loads of opamps inside, and some of them sits directly in the preamp signal path, but then again a lot of the good
    overdrive pedals have them too. It is the FET based TL07x series, which sounds good in pedals. It will be used with a 4x12" Chinese V30 loaded Harley Benton cab,
    bought second hand for around $230. A system that has been quite easy on the wallet :-) Those cabs are pretty well made, with no particle board and with metal
    handles, and they are cheaper than buying the speakers chassis only. Bonusinfo: They can also be had as 2x12", and the size fits a large Marshall head. Downsides are:
    A lot less attitude and street credit, and the Tolex is more sensible.

    I remember being so excited when i bought my brand new 900 single 12 combo. Until I got home and plugged it in. Thin and raspy sounding overdrive. Then I put my well broken in Vintage 30. There it was. Thick rich overdrive. I sold that amp and bought an 800 later and never regretted it. The 900 was always more of a one trick pony for me, where the 800 just always seemed to sound good no matter what the settings. Thanks again for the comparison and keep up the good work.

    At any rate, I came across an old mail order catalog the other day from the late '70s. JMP 50 watt heads were $449 US (100 watt heads were $499 US), 1960 cabinets were about the same ($450US) and 1982 cabinets a little more. I still kick myself for not buying a 50 watt half-stack back then!

    I acquired a JCM 900 4100 a couple of months ago. I plugged straight in and tried channel B (the one with extra distortion via solid state clipping) and was fairly disappointed. Then I tried channel A and got things dialed in - ahhhhh ... there's that vintage Marshall tone. I run channel A with a somewhat clean tone (gain around 6.2) and use it as a pedal platform into a Marshall 1965a 4x10. Sounds great at gigs so quite happy with it. Just makes the B channel, reverb, and effects loop circuitry that I don't use overkill. Will probably build a plexi clone one day that matches the dimensions of my 4x10, mostly just for fun and to keep things simpler circuit-wise - not convinced it will actually sound better than the 900.

Only thing that freaked me out is how much lighter it was than my older Marshalls. I'm guessing transformer weight??? Not 100% sure, but heavier must be better, right? I would be interested if you can answer a question. Can you get about the same level of distortion using a circa 1974 50W head with two channels as with a 1977 JMP that has a master vol and pre-amp? The 1974 has no preamp and I am interested in achieving about the same level of distortion at Volume set at about 3 or so, certainly not more than 5.
