Evening Routine of a Slow Living Minimalist

- This is my slow living evening routine.
I love the evening. Things quiet down as it slowly gets dark. Recently, I have adopted the slow living lifestyle. And as part of that, I’m trying to be more intentional with my evenings.
This calm evening routine is typical of how I would like to spend my free hours at night. I definitely have nights where I just binge Netflix. But, one step at a time, I try to mix in more mindful ways to quiet down and unwind after a busy day.
I like to stop working around 5pm, and then first do an intense cardio workout. I then jump into the shower and change into a fresh pair of clothes.
I love to cook. I find it very relaxing, a great way to get out of my head and just mess about. Tonight, I’m making spaghetti! With chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, and pesto alla Calabrese. Top it off with some grated parmesan cheese, parsley, and toasted pine nuts, and dinner is ready! As part of my intention to slow down and be more present, I decide to not do anything else during my meal. This way, I can really focus my attention on how the meal tastes, and it also helps in not eating too fast.
After dinner, I spent the rest of the night doing the dishes, making tea, playing guitar, and reading a novel. Around 10:30pm, I head to bed and listen to an episode of the 99% Invisible podcast.
Not every night looks like this, but these are some calming practices that help me to slow down and prepare for the much-needed rest ahead.

Well said

Before slow living was a thing, I thought I was just weird. Especially when I was a teen. Nowdays I actively seek ways to slow down every day and enjoy my time on earth. I even film slow living vlogs now. The most important thing is to have the intention to slow down. Everything else will come. Just don't expect change to come overnight. Take your time and adapt to a new lifestyle and see what works for you or not. Take care everyone ❤️ great video!
True words and great suggestions, thanks for sharing! 🙏🏻
❤️✅
I feel more relaxed just watching you slow live.
Thanks Tanya! 😀
We are very much alike, am an introvert too thank you so much for your patience and understanding. X
You are welcome, Ingenesia! 🙂
Slow living was calling to me for a longtime and I didn’t know that until now. Thank you 😊
You’re welcome 😊
What a great channel to demonstrate your way of living a more chosen existence. We are all trying to work towards being more intentional rather than reactive. Thanks!
Glad you enjoy the videos on the channel, Ed! 😉
Lovely! My type of evening. I had a corporate job (fast pace) and I always knew that what I was doing was going against my real nature. So happy now that I can design my own day and take time for myself. In addition to slowing down your heart beat, your slow evening is low budget. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed the video, Lucy! 😀
Looks very relaxing and similar to how I used to live. But now with a wife and 3 kids it’s hard to find quiet moments like this
That's indeed a big difference, Ralph. Hope your family is well and also that you'll still be able to find moments of peace and quiet here and there! ✨
Just 2 kids, a wife, a 4300 sq ft property and a business to run... There is like 3-4 evenings in a hole year, where I have this much time on an evening like the guys has here in this video.. Even when I am on vacation I will work in the evening, at least after the kids are in beds, or very early in the morning before my wife and kids wakes up. ;)
I really enjoyed the guitar music (and I'm not a music person usually)
Your video gave me a last push to sell my Playstation the next day and I don't regret. Thank you for your work!
That's a big decision, Phil! 🙌🏻 Good luck with exploring other activities now that you have freed up some time.
Pretty much like my routine, although I live in a van. Congratulations for choosing slow mindful living and sharing it with us. 🙏🏻
I would love to live in a van one day, Hieu! 🚐
@@IAmPeterCook I would love to play the guitar like you do, I’m still learning, but it brings me so much joy to fill up the silence with simple melodies…
Wonderful lifestyle. Outside time is a must though! Long walk in fresh air.
Yes, Marie, I agree! Love long hikes and fresh air as well. 😀
That was so relaxing! I am definitely going to try your recipe! My evening routine is similar unless I work an evening shift and come home late. I also set my clothes and accessories for the next day and check my schedule and calendar. I pay attention to lighting too. Realized that when lights are out and only have my salt lamp on,prepares my brain for sleeping earlier.thanks for sharing your routine.
Thank you! Glad to hear it inspired you ☺️. Dimmed lights is definitely helpful, unfortunately there's no on/off switch in our head, so that fall asleep quickly I find it really helps to slowly unwind in the last hour before going to bed 😴
Your evening ritual is very similar to mine. I don't own a TV either. It stopped working several years ago and I decided not to buy another one. I feel like not having a TV has freed up space in my head.
Glad to hear not having a TV works for you, too, Louisa! I'm not sure if I will never own a TV again, but for now I'm also enjoying the freed up space in both my living room and my head. 😉
I have a TV but only use it for Apple TV apps like Netflix, Hulu, HBOMax, CZcams… What’s the difference?
So happy to have found your channel your content is very soothing and informative thank you
Thanks, Sheila! 😉
That's 2 of your video's I've seen, both amazing! and so had to subscribe, thanks, look forward to watching many more!
I like the idea of listening to podcast at the end. Being able to close your eyes but still be entertained seems really good
Yes, it's great! 🎙
I watched this again today... Good reminders here.... Cooking goes hand in hand with minimalism. Camomile - good idea ! > Your videos have shelf life !
Thanks, Lachlan! 🙏🏻
This was so relaxing!!! Thank you! ☺️
Happy to hear that, Judy! 😀
New subscriber here- something you just said: you had trouble concentrating on reading at first… I can relate. I’m in the process of reprogramming myself. Despite living in a beautiful place I’ve let myself become waaay too busy. I think it’s a way of distracting myself from certain emotions. Trying to come back to myself. I love your videos. They are REAL-
This was so insightful and helped me consider ways to implement more mindfulness into my evening routines and days off work. Thank you for the tips 😊
You're welcome! ✨
I can't handle pure mindfulness sessions but I guess this could be an alternative. It doesn't have to be everything or nothing but something in between.
Thanks!
Glad you liked it, wartem! 🙌🏻
Thanks for sharing your routine. I've learned a few tips from you which will definitely help me. The pasta dish looked delicious!
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it. The pasta was delicious! 😀
For longest time I felt 'alone' in having the slower pace of life after 5:00. Being more on introvert - loner end of the spectrum I can easily amuse myself yet would question, is this weird? NOT! Being also a minimalist of many years also it all ties in together so well and my home front is full of peace very fulfilling, and nuturing. My TV (which I do have one) consists majority of the time Music Choice channels; Smooth Jazz, Sound Scapes genres. I incorporate some positive podcasts of sorts, either glass of red wine I'm trying to finish from my dinner or herbal tea. No better way to end one's day. And makes for a very restful night of sleep once I sit on edge of my bed and pay gratitude for the day and what I have and accomplished. Namaste!
I'm sure that many people think I'm weird, but I don't care. I'm happy & content. There's so much constant noise in world, I feel everyone needs still moments, even extroverts.
@@user-ky3ph9nw2d At the end of the day what matters is YOU and your own contentment. I so agree on the noise and being more on introvert end and minimalist I declutter so much noise and toxic enviroment.
More daily routines videos pls~~~enjoyed it!!!
Thanks Min Ji, I also love watching other people's routine videos 😉
A nice routine. You are blessed to be able to make these choices.
Loved your guitar song.
Happy to hear you enjoyed watching the video, Rho! 😀
Thank you, Peter. This was very helpful. Lovely guitar solo. 👍🏻
Thanks for the kind words, Stephanie! Happy to hear you enjoyed the video. 😀
I'm a recent subscriber to your channel and really enjoying it ! I recently quit a corporate job in my early fifties and am slowly settling into a life of early retirement. There are aspects of work that I miss, but on balance I'm much happier now... I love being able to live life at my own pace without deadlines or meetings etc. And no people to manage... bliss :) Have you ever talked in your videos about where you live ? Those mountain views are beautiful !
Thanks Chris! I'm glad to hear you're feeling happier now, in early retirement. 🙌🏻
Same. Thanks for sharing.
Goals…love it!
🙌🏻
That 99% is soooo amazing!!! Thanks for sharing
One of my fav podcasts! I always find their stories so relaxing after a hard day of work. Tip: check out their recent show on a $20 million rock paper scissors game between the two greatest auction houses in the world, Christie’s and Sotheby’s (99percentinvisible.org/episode/rock-paper-scissors-bus/). It's a great listen!
Thanks for this video 🥰🙏
This was absolutely fcking beautiful. Such a novel and simple approach to modern living almost seems subversive in its complete rebellion against the social media hyperconnectivity that the powers that be have led us all to believe is somehow essential to modern fulfillment. I too watch very little tv if any. I particularly loved the almost ritualized cooking/meal segment. You'd make an excellent life coach, Mr. Cook. I can't believe I just discovered your channel. 😊
Your voice is epic Peter! :)
I want you to narrate my day!
Oh wow, thanks Francesco! Been following your channel for quite some time, even did your Notion class on Skillshare. Thanks for taking the time to watch one of my videos and leave a comment! 😀
Very inspiring
Wow ! Beautiful video ! 🥰🥰❤️💕👍🏻👍🏻🙏🙏
I like how you integrated your books into your life. And glad it is not another booktuber. lol :)
Thank you! Recently I've gotten more into reading fiction. It's a great way to slow down, let the worries of the day for what they are, and expand my horizon 😊.
What a great video, very nice guitar jam 🎸 and that pasta meal looked so delicious 😋 very happy to have found your channel 🙂
That pasta was indeed delicious, Rosemary! 😉
Your video is great. I'll be back.
@@IAmPeterCook 🧄🧅🍝😋 I'm getting hungry again thinking about it!😅
A wonderful video, Peter. I was surprised by how many of things you do (during your day and evening) that match mine - it was uncanny. I knew there was a reason why i was drawn to your videos. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the kind words, Leslie, glad you liked the video! ✨
This was a great video. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! ✨
This is right for me.
love your vibes 💓
Thanks! 🙏🏻
Im also is a slow living minimalist and introvert. Happy to see someone like me. Hi
Hi 👋.
That cooking skill is what I have been looking for. I love cooking.
I love cooking, too! 😀
Thank you for the music 😊
You're welcome 😊
i like your narration voice reminds me of David attenborough, so calming and reassuring. I'm also trying to take things slow and focus on my self development. please make more vids like this.greetings from the Philippines!
That's quite the compliment, Leo, thank you! Good luck with taking things more slowly and working on your self-development, you got this 🙌🏻
I also don't watch TV...love your routine
Nice thank you oh and love the recipe definitely going to make it look yummy
Hope you will enjoy it! 🍽
Thank you for the wonderful video! Lots of useful tips. My nights are usually frantic😭
Thank you! Hopefully it inspires you to find some time - even if it's just once every week - to slow down and be idle.
Beautiful. I'm getting the hang of slow mornings, but I really need a slow evening routine. I work during the day, pick up my toddler from daycare at 5:30pm and things are hectic all night. Dinner usually gets on the table late, and my husband enjoys playing video games right before bed. I would prefer to sit in silence and read. I've started going to bed early and just reading my Kindle. Right now I'm reading "Why Buddhism is True" which is about Buddhist philosophy and how it aligns with principles of evolutionary psychology. It's fascinating. I love the podcast ideas. I can heartily recommend Reply All, investigative journalism about the Internet, always interesting and often funny. (Podcast recently ended, but the previous episodes are Gold.) I also enjoy Death, Sex and Money.
You have such a great voice. It’s like asmr and audiobook narrator combined.
And the whole video is amazing! :)
Thank you, Margarita! That's funny, to me my voice is just what it is. But happy to hear it sounds good to others 😊 .
Don’t think twice it’s alright!
🎶
Peter, this is eerily similar to my evenings. Lol, love it
Thanks, glad you liked it. And interesting to hear your evenings are similar. 😉
Nice video, Peter. Thanks
Glad you liked it, Jesse! 😉
Great shutdown routine, thanks for share.
Thanks for watching, Sergio! ✨
Great video Peter
Thanks 😊
I did'nt think I was going to enjoy this video as much as I did
Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Way to go Peter, way to go 👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏
Thanks, Daniel!
I love evenings too, and I can relate to a lot you said. But I must admit that you are better guitar player than me ;)
Glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately, I don't play guitar often enough, so if you practice regularly I'm sure you can catch up 😉.
Your guitar sharing was amazing? Real talent
Thanks Julie! 🎸
Great video hello from
New Orleans 👍🏽
Thanks, Terry!
Gee, you certainly gave an idea for my tomatoes at my frying pan!
Balance our life while we are young and slow down our life when we are old.
Well said, Natalie 🙌🏻
Only one thing is missing here: a fluffy cat
Yes, that would have been even better Eugene, haha! 🐈
Interesting. Thanks
✨ Glad to hear you found it interesting!
This is harder then.being a monk.....and added the totally challenging guitar music.....the couch is extraordinary inviting...not a herbal.schnaps in side.....this is truly living well....
Yessss, I also living a slow life.
We are so much alike. I like to sing or play my digital piano.
Other than running my own business. Still working on reading book…
Good luck with reading more books, Suzanne! 📖
That was a nice jam session ✨
Thanks, Naomie! 😉
I'm with you. Speed kills on the road or at home.
Indeed, Jane 😀
cool... love your videos ;)
Thanks! 😃
Wonderful routines and your voice is so calming. While listening … I thought it’s really “Little Finger” from GoT who was speaking. :)
Thanks Sarah! 😉
New subscriber here. I love your videos. We nave very similar lifestyles
I’m ready for bed now ✌🏻
😴 💤 🛏 😉
Even for an introvert like myself, this lifestyle is way too solitary and isolated. I would go crazy.
Lovely video Peter ❤ what a lovely man you are ❤❤ your lifestyle completely matches mine 👍👍
Happy to hear you enjoyed the video! 😀
Great inspirational video! Tips for lower cost, sunflower seeds works really great roasted as an alternative to pine nuts (that are quite expensive)...
Thanks for the tip, JFN! 🙌🏻
@@IAmPeterCook You lost a bit of credibility not having an inkling about cost.
@@patriciageary2803 he never said he didn’t have an idea about the cost of stuff or that he doesn’t use sunflower seeds, he merely said that it was a great idea to use sunflower seeds and being a minimalist, he can, fortunately, afford to do without any of your credibility that you want to bestow upon him so I think he’ll survive another day and maybe you can go and search for some other videos where you can bestow your full credibility onto
@@autumn5852 well, I was thinking since he is an avowed minimalist that he was also budget wise, too. Totally wrong assumption on my response. Probably prefers saffron threads over turmeric, ha ha
bestowing is my soul reason to exist.
If you could do this with kids I’d be impressed. Great guitar playing 🤘
Fair point, Josh, I appreciate that this type of evening routine is probably impossible with kids. Even without kids, I don't get to be this intentional about what I do at night a lot of the time because of work, or other things that come up. So in a way, making this video was in a way aspirational for me, like a subtle reminder to be more intentional about how I spend my evenings.
Nice one 👍
I’ve always felt like I was odd because I like to also spend my time like you show in your video, I’m quite introverted and like quiet and my own company most of the time- seeing your values reflected in mine was really great and makes you realise you’re not the only one trying to lead a more meaningful and rewarding life - I’m so glad I found your channel Peter and the videos are insightful and very professional!
Don’t stop making them and you deserve more subscribers, they will come…
Omg I love the Body Project team too! I've done this exact video. Subscribing to your channel... Like minds etc.
Their videos are great! I did a cardio one earlier today 🏃🏻♂️
Fantastic 🏃! I'm now binging your videos. Not very minimalist, I know, but I am watching them mindfully. Glad I discovered you. Enjoy your day 🤗
Unfortunately most of us cant afford the luxury of slow living!
Peter, I love the way you live. So clean and tranquil. May I ask where do you live? Looks like it's an apartment but where I live (US), the apartment has many dogs. Dogs everywhere on the sidewalk as well. So it is never quiet. I wish you the best. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks 😀 I live in Bulgaria, in an apartment. It's not always quiet here either, like in your case there are also barking dogs in the area. Bit of a challenge at times, but it's doable.
Hey, Peter, I know this is a long way in the past, but I wanted to mention that I got a pillow speaker from Amazon and on my kindle there is a sleep timer so I set the timer for 45 minutes or whatever and drift off to sleep from the sound of the voice reading . . . never know the plot, though!
That sounds like a wonderful way to slowly drift off to sleep, Jennifer! 😴
Hey 👋 from Greece,!
👋
Nice video!
Thanks, Colin! 🙌🏻
Really enjoyed this. Couple of questions please sir, what is that song you're playing on guitar and what did was that orange sauce you added to your tomatoes and chicken?
God bless
Hey Bert, the orange sauce you asked about is pesto alla calabrese. And the guitar song I was playing was just a little jam I came up with myself. But I did take inspiration for it from Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." 🎶
...for some of us, being older, seniors, retired, life just naturally gets slower. The last 3 years has accentuated that of course, but quite often I am not sure of the day or date. I like that. I used to teach, where I lived by the clock. I have not been anywhere "away", since Jan 2020, when we flew home after a holiday. I have had various health things going on this year too, which has altered what I do. I have chosen to not visit with people in groups unless outside, so for 6 months of the year, I choose to only socialize with family members. I think life has slowed down for other people in a variety of ways- for instance, my daughter has worked from home since March, 2020. No more super early showers, make up, dressing up, driving.....this has been a huge benefit to her and her family. My son also has largely worked from his home over the last few years. People's homes have become more of a centre and a comfort. We have learned to constantly enjoy the little pleasures. I think that since 2020, the world has changed and will likely stay this way to a certain extent.
Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Andrea!
You are the first person I've ever seen that slow lives but speaks fast :)
Lol I guess it's subjective, others say I speak too slow!
Minimalist, good cook (with perfect Italian accent), musician and Mac user(extra bonus). Are you open for marriage, Peter?🤣🤣
Ok, jokes aside, your channel is quite relaxing and I can relate to most of your routines. I’ve started to practice mindfulness into my day recently and its benefits are remarkable and, for me, unexpected.
Sorry, taken! 😂 Happy to hear you're experiencing remarkable benefits from practicing mindfulness and living more slowly. 🙌🏻
Team Body Project 👍👍👍
They're the best! 🏃🏻♂️
What song is that you played on the guitar? Lovely.
It's just some jam I came up with myself inspired by Bob Dylan's "Don't think twice its all right" 😉
So many distractions and the need to keeping it simple, one step at a time.
I do challenge the slow living in one regard, these videos seems to cater or promote SELF and less so to the greater purposes of why we are on this planet.
I am a believer in Jesus Christ, and I can take away from this slow living concept because we can get easily distracted and sometimes we just need to take a step back from "rush hour."
But what I have found is the life God would have us live is so much more than about ourselves, and what we seek aside from a bit of solitude and order etc, is our purpose in life. Whom am I , what am I here for, surely there is something greater outside myself. Some will give there lives doing good for other people and it fulfills them to a point. And this is good, but what is needed is a relationoship with the one that is in heaven, the one that is in the place we desperately seek called paradise. That peace only comes when we, yes, sinners accept what Christ has done, paying your debt of sinfulness, so that we may be united to a God that has His arms open wide to receive and love us. Love is what I have found and peace. Slow living is a way to give ourselves boundaries from the chaotic world we live in, and I am for it. But God can carry us through the chaos and help us move forward in the direction we are meant to go, overcoming the obstacles and unfortunate events in life, and also to celebrate the good things that happen. It is God that opens our eyes where everything becomes new, because I relationship in Christ, makes us new in every sense. God bless. Thanks for the video.
I am a total intravert, and do this as well.
Is it wrong to watch this at 1.5x speed?
Curious what you do for work? I’m struggling to finish my work early and leave it behind. Since it’s mentally draining, it takes a while for my brain to be open to any type of new information at night
I hear you, I have days like that as well! This video is my ideal evening routine, but I don't always have the headspace for reading. Especially if I had a mentally draining day at work. But listening to podcasts is something I always enjoy, regardless of how my day was. Because I can close my eyes and be completely absorbed by the story. I then pick a show that has nothing to do with business, and everything with people + storytelling. That takes me out of whatever was on my mind at work that day, it feels like it expands my horizon, puts things in perspective. ✨
This is avantgarde
I have 2 kids, a wife, a 4300 sq ft property and a business to run... There is like 3 evenings in a hole year, where I have this much time on an evening like the guys has here in this video.. Even when I am on vacation I will work in the evening, at least after the kids are in beds, or very early in the morning before my wife and kids wakes up. ;)
I can imagine it must be difficult finding time to unwind with those responsibilities, Anders. I hope you are still able to find brief moments here and there to slow down. Wishing you all the best! 😀
Lovely, thanks for sharing. What was the piece you played on guitar?
Thanks! What I played on the guitar is a little jam I came up with on my own. If it reminds you of anything, it might me the little wink on the G7 chord to Bob Dylan's _'Don't Think Twice, It's Alright.'_ 😉
@@IAmPeterCook you inspired me to give guitar a try. Played a little bass when much younger.

Hi Peter, you would be this perfect human being if you asked yourself the question "what is a sentient being" when you are preparing your dinner. Please think of chicken plant-based alternatives. Have mercy for the chickens, you are a pioneer of empathy and promoting well-being. I believe you can take it to the next level with the most ethical diet there is - a fully plant-based one.
Nice life
Thanks Peter! Great name 😉
Hi,
A recent convert to your videos which I enjoy very much. However, this seems to apply to single people living alone. For me, (married with children) when my work finishes my second job (home life) begins and I can only dream of eating uninterrupted and listening to a podcast without the latest drama. Perhaps we can have a frazzled parent version soon please?
I hear you, Eugene, you're totally right. I don't have kids, so I can't make a frazzled parent version. And while I was alone this evening, many nights I'm not. Or I have to work, for example. And then my evening routine is not as calm and culture focused as this. So in a way, this video is also aspiration for myself. I hope you are able to find small moments in your busy life to slow down, perhaps when the kids are in bed. Little bits of quality time can go a long way in making a difference. 🙏🏻 Good luck, Eugene!
What spices do you use for the chicken?
I like to add curry spices to the chicken for flavor. 🌶
