Disney's Sorcerer's Hat Demolition: Time-lapse music video from three views

- We visited the giant Sorcerer's Hat at Disney's Hollywood Studios almost every night between Dec 30, 2014 and Feb 25, 2015. Each night photos were taken from the right, left and in front of the hat, in order to make a time-lapse video of these three different views. Each view shows some aspect of the demolition better than the other two. For example, the left view shows how the hat's lining was steadily removed, leaving the ring.

Goodbye memories. Some people may have thought differently than me, but to me, the hat was the most iconic part of the park. Just because some thought of you as an eyesore or a bad idea, that doesn't mean it wasn't beloved by many. It may have not been there first, but it will still leave a gaping hole in my Disney shaped heart.
R.I.P, Sorcerer's hat. You will be remembered forever.
2001 - 2015 😔
McVeighM2K11 Well I'm sorry u feel this way, but u MAY feel better if u read my other comment up there😇
R.I.P Sorcerer's Hat
(2001-2015)
Made from memories :'(
Ugh it had a slow death too. Sorry but I loved the hat. I will miss it.
Same Here! I love the hat and will always miss it. :(
+Catelynn Marie Last time I was at Disney was in 1999, and I heard about the construction of the sorcerer’s hat and saw pictures of it and of course I liked it, but what I didn't know is that they planted the thing right in front of the beautiful facade of The Great Movie Ride. Rather stupid place to put it, if you ask me. Then they put the sound stage in front of that? It does have me wondering what the heck Disney was thinking. I always thought the sorcerer's hat was in another location of the park and the soundstage was BEHIND it.
+jukingeo yeah I definitely agree with you on the soundstage especially. The placement of the hat wasn't the greatest because it definitely made The Great Movie Ride seem almost hidden in the background if that even makes sense. However I really did love how the hat looked. I guess because the first time I ever went to WDW, the hat was in place and seeing this iconic symbol that glittered was very exciting and pleasing to look at. The soundstage was a complete mess though
Well, Now the park has no icon. :'(
I miss the Sorcerer's Hat so much... I'll never get to see it again... 😢
Nintendo Gamer Some one thinks it'll pop back up somewhere else.
Nintendo Gamer U get to see it on CZcams🙂
This made me wanna cry don't know why 😰
Katie Patchett Could be what played over it.
Since the Sorcerer’s Hat and Earffel Tower at Hollywood Studios were closed and demolished, the Sorcerer’s Hat was not replaced by anything and there is no icon for Hollywood Studios
Finally! So glad to get that eyesore out of there.
In Memory of Sorcerer's Hat
2001-2015
I miss the sorcerer's hat at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
VideoGameFan 1998 me too :(
I am a Disney fanatic and really won't miss it. It was nothing more than a souvenir shop and it was right in front of the Chinese Theater. I got used to it but I really wasn't thrilled when it was built. If it was already there when a person went to the Studios I could see missing it or if it were a ride or something.
I do accept though that it is something you all liked
We never liked it much !
+Michael A. Buccilli I was last in the park in 1999 and back then it was MGM Studios. When you walked down the main midway, you saw the Chinese Theater / Great Movie Ride in the distance. The facade of the building was a beautiful 'anchor' for the midway. I had heard about the construction of the Sorcerers Hat and then saw completed pictures and I liked it. But what I didn't know was that they planted it right in front of The Great Movie Ride. I always thought the hat was located in another area of the park. While I like the hat, I like the Chinese Theater more, so I certainly don't like the location. Then on top of everything, they put that sound stage in FRONT of it?!?! (I always thought it was BEHIND the hat). Well as they say what is in the past is in the past and at least the long midway view of the Chinese Theater is restored.
+jukingeo Yes, I too have seen the Chinese theater many times before the hat and and I do feel that being able to see the Chinese Theater is more important as an anchor to Disney Studios.
I’ve been to Disney like 10 times. And you know how animal kingdom has that tree, magic kingdom has Cinderella’s castle, this was what I thought of when I saw it. It was like the key thing that made me know that it was Hollywood studios
Had to watch it with the sound off, What a god awful song
Chewy I listen to it b'cuz it SOUNDS REALLY pretty!
So glad it's gone. There are such nice sight lines in that park that were blocked for so long because of that thing. This is a good thing.
glad to see it go! when they put it up i couldnt believe it. it distracted from the parks concept and hid the chinese theater.
Why di they remove this amazing and beautiful landmark?.
It will be missed.
NOT!!!
Lol xD I know right.
jasobres I missed it...
RIP Sorcerers Hat
2001 - 2015
I'm really going to miss the old Sorcerer's Hat. It has been one of the parks' famous icons. It will always be remembered.
I wonder will replace the Hat as the park's new icon now it's gone?
Um, how about the park's old, and worthy icon? Y'know, the one that makes sense? The one that was too long hidden right behind it?
I never got to experience it.
Aww, why must good things come to an end?!
I miss that hat 😞😞
Why they do that :'(
It's THE symbol of the Park, it's as if they destroyed the castle of Magic Kingdom.
No, the Chinese Theater is THE symbol of the park. God damn you kids. Do you think that thing was there in 1989?
Kairielise God damn you, SHUT UP.
I have a feeling that this isn't the last time we see the hat. They didn't demolish it they slowly and carefully took it down in a very organized manor. I think it's going to pop up again.
They cut it into pieces very haphazardly only to be able to take it out. No bolts were taken out it was just cut up
Yeah there done with the hat if you look on close up pictures you can see the jagged edges right above where the bolts were and also the hat was dry rotting
I always thought they should stick it in a field and put that ridiculous wand from Epcot next it. So it looked like they buried Mickey up to his forehead.
+Kairielise You forgot to add the ears from the Earful Tower. That would complete the picture.
Poor Mickey sorcerer hat will be missed
Great video! Took a lot of time and dedication. I appreciate it!
What's going to replace the beloved hat?
+Mr. Artsysmart Nothing, I hope (see my comment above). I am happy that the view of the Chinese Theater has been restored. While I do like the hat, I didn't like the location. I always thought it was in another area of the park.
Why play sad music during this? This should be upbeat happy music!!!
I know right. 🎶🎉🎊
That's the problem. When a site that a lot of people love is taken down for something new to attract new customers, it's not a happy event for everyone.
***** Wow. I never thought I'd get someone who agrees with me, but thanks a trillion!
Spinlok Why?? The destruction is apparently sad.
Why? 😭😭😭
The magic... Is gone😢
Why are people cutting onions around me right now!
So sad. What does the future hold for DHS?
I guess I'm too late to visit that big hat in Walt Disney World. It would have been a wonderful visit. Thanks for this beautiful moment, Attractions Magazine. #IWishIAmInWaltDisneyWorldNow By the way, what's the name of the song in the video?
What a pretty little sad song. Sad to see such an unforgettable monument go, but I'm sure they did it for some reason. Here's to a new and improved Hollywood Studios!
As a non-American citizen, this is the first time I've seen/heard of the hat being taken down. I remember when I was a lot younger and went to Disney, I would stand at a certain distance with my sister taking a photo to look like I was wearing the hat. Good memories
Never have I been so happy about something portrayed so sadly!
I have pictures of the Mickey hat
I think that the other reason that I wasn't happy about the Hat placement is that it wasn't anything but a souvenir kiosk.
Plot twist: The hat wasn’t removed, it was eaten by a giant invisible Mickey.
Hey, let's get rid of the Sorcerer's Hat,
wait.. we can't do that.. if we do, we might as well get rid of Splash Mountain...
oh..
I liked the idea of the hat but it served no real purpose so I'm glad the view of the great movie ride is now front and center
+The Bellcaptain Agreed, see my responses above.
Music is unique composition of licensed production music elements. Singer is Lokka. Considered doing right shot as Wreck it Ralph, left sad, and front happy farewell party but made video too busy and confused.
I was fortunate to go to disney before demolishing this hat. took up photo with him. I kept thinking "when you are 15, I will take a picture better than I took this year" (I am 13). and there they take the damn hat. did not understand that. for which reason they took the hat?
I remember standing under this thing while they were still building it.
Even tho I was not there to witness this this was my favorite park in Disney the was also my favorite landmark of Disney ever I liked it better then the castle at the magic kingdom and the tree of life but now it’s gone if you here me Disney please bring this back put however some people may disagree with me taking mickeys magic hat away will definitely leave a huge hole in my hart RIP Mickeys hat
Crystalbird3207: The 10 Saddest anime deaths
rip
That's so sad :(
So why they take it off?
What are they putting for the highlight of the park
Exactly what's supposed to be the highlight of the park, The Chinese Theater. Y'know, the icon that actually has something to do with classic Hollywood and movies, and isn't just a giant advertisement for a marketing promotion that ended 14 years ago?
Though i never been to Disney World to experience seeing that hat, Disneyland still has theirs intact, in which i hope they keep, for Mickey Mouse's sake. :3 :p
BYE FELICIA
I sense either a Frozen, Wreck It Ralph, or Big Hero 6 attraction.
There will be a Frozen attraction in Epcot.
More likely a permanent stage for events like star wars weekends and other events. The area is to small for an attraction plus the great movie ride has a new sponsor
Man, I want a Ralph or Big Hero 6 ride.
now I'm not sad because they demolished the hat! if you give me an attraction BH6, I die happy: ')
current rumors seem to indicate a stage will be built at some point. even the mpas are pointing to it
why t needed to demolition
Great song poor thing why?
why did it close in the fist place?
Why did it open in the first place?
I'm confused why are they taking it down?
The better question would be why did they put it up?
+Kairielise Agreed. Well, the hat was nice, but the location wasn't. I never knew the planted the thing right in front of the Chinese Theater blocking it's view from the entrance.
😭😭😭😭
Such a shame that they took away The Sorcerer’s Hat and all the other good Disney attractions. My childhood with Disney is ruined
Pouring out a 40 for you Sorcerer's Hat!!!!!
Was never a big fan of it !
First
Good riddance is what I say! That hat had no right to be there!
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Don't like this music. Too sad for something so happy.
This is not happy
+CoasterGuy how is this not happy? I've been waiting for this day since the first time I had the misfortune of walking into that park to see that eyesore blocking the view of the Chinese Theater. It felt like if they built a 300 foot yellow shoe in the hub right in front of Cinderellas Castle.
Kairielise This is not happy because the hat was not an eyesore. It was an icon. An icon that was removed.
+CoasterGuy No, parks don't build their Icons 12 years after they open. Cinderella's Castle? 1971 with the park. Spaceship Earth? 1983, with the park. The Tree of Life? 1998, with the park. Disney MGM opened in 1989 with the Chinese Theater as its Icon. The Icon was "officially" changed to the Earful Tower after an image usage dispute with the original Chinese Theater's owners. Ultimately Disney decided to kill two birds with one stone and build that monstrosity to advertise the 100 Years of Magic celebration in 2001. It intentionally blocked the beautiful sight lines to theTheater we had enjoyed for 12 years, resolving all disputes with the owners, though I'm sure what the owners really wanted was for Disney to pony up advertising rights rather than defacing the view as you entered the park. But after defacing Spaceship Earth the previous year with that stupid wand, that probably gave them the idea. I'm glad both are gone now and both parks original beauty is restored.
