    It's interesting to look at it like this, because while FAB has more choices, it streamlines a lot of the more intimidating things from Magic (for me, deckbuilding, interaction) and gives a lot more player agency. Commander is a fun board game, but FAB is just the evolution of 1v1 tcgs. (and UPF is still fun too)

    I find FAB to be more stressful from turn 1. At least with MTG, I have a couple turns to establish lands and chill. Both brilliant games but so different.

      Very much agree! Amazing games in their own rights though of course

    Flesh And Blood is a new name. Learned about its existence a few days back. Going to look more into it. Not to buy or get into the card game, though.
    I'm making my own trading collectable card game so I'm doing as much research as I can on all card games that pique my interest and FAB is one of them.
    Magic: The Gathering will always remain king. Without it, FAB and all the others would cease to exist. I know a lot of people hate to hear this, but it's true.
    Also interesting to note, is WotC had a patent on MTG and even a lot of its gameplay and terminology like "tap." Tap if used by another card game could result in that company getting into some serious legal hot water with Wizards. Which in my opinion, is kind of dumb. If you look at the MTG patent it's pretty crazy.
    Thankfully it has long time expired otherwise, FAB and all these others before it would've been sued. Too many card designs look too similar.
    Yugi-Oh! Which came out a bit after Magic: The Gathering, got in trouble by calling the cards, "magic cards." Which is understandable on MTG's behalf. Even though the cards look nothing like each other, there could be customer confusion in just the name itself.
    That being said, wish you went more in depth with how Flesh and Blood is played VS how Magic The Gathering is played.

    Sure I agree with your point here, but to be honest this is not enough to convince most people. I do think that FAB is more difficult then MTG so you could discuss more about other complicated things like pitchstacking, blocking taking into consideration reactions (which is in my opinion deeper then mtg combat tricks and counterspells). Also the fact that almost every deck in FAB plays COMPLETELY differently, like different card games almost. I only started playing fab two months ago and i am still learning every matchup. Game strategies also change with matchups sometimes, which I dont really see in mtg. Control is control against burn and against tron, in FAB Dromai against agro decks tries to race them, against Bravo it can switch to a defencive strategy. Also there are few cards that would lock out your deck like blood moon against tron or grave hate against grave decks in mtg, so counterplaying takes more skill then luck in fab. You could say much more than since you are much more experienced then I am in both games, but giving only one arguement is just not enough.

    Would have talked a bit about match structure too, mtg having bo3 with sideboarding and a strong array of silver bullets is very different from the considerations you make preboarding for a bo1 game where you only know your opponent's hero

    • @WeMakeBest
      @WeMakeBest  Před 8 měsíci +1

      AHHH, this is a REALLY good point! This brings flexible heroes in FAB to a whole nother level with the bo1 format for sure

    I think an element you're leaving out is MTG having much more complicated board states due to the number of permanents that actually stay around. This leads certain late games of MTG to be way more complicated than basically any other card game. That being said I think FAB is more consistently complex due to how it works. I think its really a draw in terms of which game is harder.

    • @WeMakeBest
      @WeMakeBest  Před 8 měsíci

      Yep this is a perfect description of why I think MTG has the edge late game in stalled out board states!

  • @lifitcg
    @lifitcg Před 8 měsíci

    I think your two line graphs capture the fundamental difference quite well. The earlygame in MTG can often feel quite on-rails with straightforward or forced decisions, and the complexity generally expands each turn as players accumulate more resources to interact or combine in different ways. With FAB you can have meaningful decisions to make from turn 0, but the way that resources generally do not build up over time and the fact that cards are heavily rate-limited by the constraints of the game (4 cards a turn, established power/cost ratio of attacks, etc) means that the "complexity ceiling" in FAB feels lower. I wouldn't declare one game as being overall more difficult than the other because the degree to which this generalisation is true (i.e. the "exact" gradient and intercept of the lines on your charts) changes a lot for both games depending on the exact cardpool/format available at any given time.

    I dont want to scare people away from the game. FaB can be a very easy to play on a surface level, which is perfectly fine to start or even stay with. Yes, it can get as complex as you want from the very start. Imo MTG starts slower but can be very complex in the mid to late game but can also be very straightforward depending in the deck you play. FaB having no resource flooding or screwing (for the most part) is a hugh appeal.

    Ive been with FaB since aria, but so many of my favorite decks are banned... also, I cant find ppl to play with. For me, the question is, how much longer will FaB last? I havent bought any cards since everfest, I just peek around to see how the game is evolving

    • @larvatar2387
      @larvatar2387 Před 8 měsíci +4

      The game seems to be holding very *very* well, the Living Legebd system is working as intended, and new sets are actually trying to dial back the overall power level. FaB is just a hard game to keep up with if you don't put the time in, so I'd just try to shill it to as many people as possible at your locals. Game's made it this far, and is not showing signs of slowing down.

      Sounds like your local scene needs some people. My local scene got started through a couple of people that were basically ambassadors for the game and fostered that community into so much more.

      @@yucatansuckaman5726Agree with this, in Sydney it's been the ambassadors/advocates that have been encouraging more numbers. I'd seek those groups out or look to continue to be one yourself 😁

    I am sorry but FAB is the most UNFRIENDLY for new players. Simply just flustrating to lose on the turn 2-3-4. Some heroes like bravo can paralize for rounds, so I have heard the balance about the game but where is it? I have HUGE problems with nowadays magic as well, but at least it has some fun before turns flustrating. But FAB from a beginner perspective is TOO MUCH. Not even fun for even a turn.
    Its a reverse magic, you need to know all combos of you to make normal moves so theoretically more balanced, while in magic there is basically anything can be done, you can do anything you want. In FAB its not true, pretty limited what you can do, and yeah it makes the game more hardcore but thats why I left it forever.
    PS I dont play magic either. My main card game is another one.

    • @edchan9667
      @edchan9667 Před 4 měsíci

      I agree, I don't think it's helpful to say FaB is harder than everything (and only good players play FaB mentality/impression) i wouldn't say I'm a good player but if I'm playing beginners there's no way I'm using a deck to beat them in turn 2-3-4. I'm wanting them to learn and enjoy it.
