  • A joint statement by NATO's 32 members says that Ukraine is on a quote 'irreversible' path to membership. At the alliance's 75th anniversary summit, they also pledged 40 billion euros of aid to Kyiv next year. But most of that aid is set to come from the bloc's largest member, the US. And with NATO-sceptic Donald Trump challenging President Biden in November's election, there's no assurance of long-term funding.
For more on this, we cross over to Brussels and speak with Ian Lesser. He's a Distinguished Fellow at the German Marshall Fund and his areas of expertise include US foreign policy and NATO.
We also talk to Gustav Gressel, Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, he joins us from Berlin.

F16 this, F16 that. Unless NATO provides pilots, the F16 will simply be targets for the Russians. Teaching a pilot to effectively operate a complex weapon system like the F16 takes years. Then, there is the issue of where will Ukraine operate the F16’s from. We are NOT talking about a Gripen that can operate from austere distributed fields. The F16 NEEDS secure bases to operate from, and teams of dedicated service personnel! Up to now, Ukraine has been flying from one base, landing at another, then moving the aircraft to another base, just to hide the aircraft from the Russians.
Also, there is the issue of weapons for the F16. How many of them can even deploy AIM120C? Never mind where the Ukrainians will find those missiles. Sorry…. F16 will not be effective for a long time to come.

As Russia is an enormously large country going all the way to the Pacific, it would cause some more damage in Russia, but nothing fatal. However, it would certainly make the Russian people even more rally 'round the flag, thereby strengthening Putin's standing and the war effort, and it would trigger even more massive devastating retaliatory strikes on Ukraine, which would make it even more difficult for Ukraine to get through the next winter. In a nutshell, it would be counterproductive.

The Ukrainian conflict was predicted by US academics, politicians and other experts, based on Western behaviour and policy. A predictable war is also an avoidable war. The war was not avoided and here we are. My issue is with Western behaviour and policy since the beginning of the conflict. Ukraine wanted both aircraft and tanks early on in the conflict. How did the West react to Ukraine's request? Dithering and vacillating. Early on in the conflict Poland wanted to give Leopard tanks to Ukraine but Germany disallowed the move. The West was full of sanctimonious lectures aimed at India and China for buying Russian oil while the West was still buying fossil fuel and nuclear fuel. The West has always been oblivious to its duplicity, hypocrisy and double standards. Despite not paying heed to their own sanctions, the West dragged its feet on applying sanctions. Only recently, the EU rolled out its thirteenth sanction package after two years of war. Why not apply all sanctions from day one of the conflict. This piecemeal application of sanctions allowed Russia time to adjust to said sanctions. It gets even better. The West gives Ukraine missiles, but with a list of limitations. Endless dithering and vacillating regarding the range of these missiles. Restrictions as to how and where these missiles can be used. NATO would never fight a war with such restrictions. The West waited too long to provide tanks and only recently Ukraine may see F16s. This equipment would have been better leveraged by Ukraine's professional soldiers early in the conflict, while Russia was suffering losses and facing defeat in the field. Now that the West is finally providing this kit, Ukraine's professional soldiers are either dead, tired or dead. Impeccable timing. Even though more kit is making it to Ukraine, it still comes with limitations as to its use, especially regarding missiles. Personally, I find it amazing that Ukraine's allies can impose such limitations while Ukrainians are grieving the victims of the hospital that was attacked by the Russians. Remember this was predictable. If the West was not ready or willing to assure a Ukrainian victory, Istanbul may have been, albeit unsavory, a good idea. I want Ukraine to win, but the West's dithering and vacillating is affecting tactics and strategy adversely, contributing to Ukrainians dying with limited prospects of victory. Some argue that we have to be watchful of the possibility of nuclear war. Very true. In such a case, perhaps you should have avoided the war that you predicted. Perhaps the fact that Russia is a nuclear power escaped those involved. So the strategy is to not directly engage Russia, while supplying Ukraine to fight Russia, while limiting Ukraine's tactical and strategic flexibility. What is the end game? A weakened Russia perhaps? Small comfort for the dead and dying Ukrainians.
