Bloody marvelous man, what cracking Railways we had, and such a terrible loss.

Thank You for this compilation. As someone who was born in the 80's in Griffithstown/Pontypool its fascinating to see what my area looked like in the past. Amazing to see the engineering and the complex transport system in place.

So much that was once so great has now been forever lost, and certainly not in the name of progress.... truly heart breaking to think that the UK had such a comprehensive railway system and we lost it to the bureaucrats cooking the books about their inefficiency...... this line alone was supposedly so inefficient and so unnecessary and so unwanted that a dual carriageway has now been built over it...... and at huge cost to the public…… Truly a heart breaking video seeing what was built to last for hundreds of years now all gone forever well before its time.

Its the breathtaking audacity of the Victorians that always amazes me! The Crumlin Viaduct is just...well....just the sheer imagination and guts they had: There's a gap we need filled for our trains; "Build a Viaduct!!" and they bloody Did!! lol.

As the narrative said ' this could never be recreated on a preserved railway' ! A great video informative and atmospheric thanks for posting.

I used to attend Crumlin College in the 1960`s. I used to look out for the 10.00 pm train crossing the viaduct as I walked to catch the bus home from the bus stop near the bridge It was a sight that many would love to see today. it shame it was pulled down as it would have loads of people visiting from all over the world the firm that pulled it down was called "Birds"

Thanks for these memories of the glory days of the industrial valleys and the link that was the railways before industry was centralised around the cities and the M4. As a valley's boy, needless to say, I love all things valleys and despise all things cities ( and Llanelli )

Great to see the Blaenavon bottom line to Pontypool. NB at 17:27, it's Pontnewynydd (between Abersychan Low Level and Waunfelin), not Pontnewydd (which is approx. 5miles further south).
Have you got anything of the Blaenavon top line? Someone posted a vid of a passenger special just before the line closed, but the vid has since disappeared.

That's what I'd love to see, Blaenavon down past Varteg, over the viaduct and on to Pontypool.

Great clips :-) Does anyone know what year this was filmed? My Grandfather was a shunter at Llanelli and Pantiffynon and worked for GWR from 1920 until he retired in 1970!
