15:00 onwards, Marx's quote, "The State is the Executive Committee of the Bourgeoisie", is indeed very prescient in current times. Like David said just prior to that, "we have the best democracy money can buy", so maybe the problem isn't the state (Ancaps and Libertarians take note) but that the state is used and abused by the moneyed class to further their interests at the expense of everyone else, the rest of humanity, all of us!!! Is the state not just a tool to be used by he who holds greatest influence over it? In current times none are more influential than those with the greatest wealth mixed with the greatest desire to consolidate and especially to expand that wealth? So is not the solution to this problem to a) remove money from politics, which then leaves us open to backdoor deals even more corrupt than we currently have or b) remove the temptation to use and abuse power, so effectively remove the ability for one to hold power over another. This cannot be done while there still exists a monetary economy and hierarchical social structures. Which leaves us with only one social system that can be of great benefit to humanity - Libertarian Socialism!

"we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender," -- Churchill.
When the state is externally threatened, polititians will either appease the the enemy, surrender to save their own skins, or will give inspiring speaches that call for courage, sacrifice, perseverance, duty, honor, and patriotism. When the state is threatened by its citizenry, the state creates enemies for the public to fear, real or imaginary, then panders to the cowardess they instill. Even when the American public has nothing to fear, isn't scared at all, and it's only the politicians claiming that people are scared, the avaricious class has never the less, been able to insidiously poison the populace with a police state.

What a difference 6 years make! The US empire's decline is so much more visible now, with US foreign plicy dominated by imperial microaggressions, it's economy as badly stagnating as it's infrastructure is collapsing (two dams breaking in Michigan today), and systematic mishandling of the COVID 19 as a result of the complete corruption of Congress. US wealth is dwindling faster than ever, being wasted on rentierism and kept out of circulation in rentiers' savings, doing nothing, and being wasted on the US military bases empire and wars, generating the fewest jobs per dollar of public spending of any possible usage of public funds, with the peak of Versailles-Ancien Regime style out of touch madness on the part of the American superrich being shown by the fact that while the US real economy disappears during the pandemic, Wall Street registers unprecedented price gains. It seems to me the next revolution is likely to be more like the French revolution than the Russia, and the next unstable banana republic with a corrupted, fake democracy to be riven by civil war and tyranny is the United States.

I don't know why Ali goes on about the "extreme centre"...there's nothing remotely centrist about it.

Isn't he referring to the fact that they are neither far right nor far left? The Neoliberals and the Neo Conservatives have exactly the same end goal, with slightly different emphasis on Public Relations and style of rhetoric. I'm not making an argument here, just seeing if I get what he means by "extreme center".

Yes, he means politics that is in the centre of the familiar 1D left/right spectrum but is extreme in its goals and affects on economies and ordinary people.

    • @patrickholt2270

Offical centrism, as labelled by the rightwing media (which is all of it), not the centre as defined by mode average of citizens' beliefs or popularity, which is vastly to the left of what the media calls centrism. But you watch the election results, parties running to the official "centre" are getting wiped out one after another, because there is no-one there.
