  • Building My First Cutting Board.
This week I’m trying my hand at a face grain cutting board out of Bird's Eye Maple, Wenge and Purple Heart. This is my first cutting board so I wanted to keep it kind of simple. That's the reason I'm going face Grain. A face grain is the easiest to make, but also the least durable.
This is a great project for the DIY beginner. Come check out this easy step by step build with me.
    Cheers

Just found your channel really dig the videos man. So much more natural feeling over other wood working CZcams channels that have everything dialed to a t. You go about it how I feel most average weekend warrior wood worker

Mmm TX Bourbon. A friend and I went to their launch event and got to meet the owners and head distiller. Buy a bottle and get it signed. Oh, cool board too! 😂😄

It looks awesome! I like the pattern you chose too. It's a work of art. I kinda think making these are addictive because the figure in the wood makes every one of them unique and beautiful. Every one I sell I get the same comment, "I could never use this as a cutting board". To which I say... Call it a charcuterie board and actually use it!
    Anyway ... great job!

Found your videos the other day and have been binge watching, lol. Love the comedy and down to earth nature, mistakes and all. That's how we all learn. Anyway, just wanted to share a couple of glue up tips I use. Firstly, put a sheet of kitchen wax paper under your clamps to catch any drips. Secondly, save your clamps by putting packing tape, or similar, onto your clamps. Glue doesn't stick to it and saves clean up time.

I agree with the flipping of the colors, it looks really great, though. I have been trying to get up the nerve to make a cutting board. Seeing you do it for the first time gives me the confidence to get out there and just do it.

Nice job. I've made a ton of cutting boards, and you did very well for your first. I've had to use epoxy/CA to fill some small voids like that, as well. One of my favorite things to do is cut a bunch of strips and figure out the variation for multiple boards at once. Congrats!

I’ve seen people make a jig to hold pieces vertical so you can pass them through your planer to act a jointer. Maybe this is something you can craft up or you already have

    • @BuildDadBuild

I did that for the top. I was horrified (since those clamps are so long) to try to flip it over before the glue was dry.
