That strategy for doing Sonic 2 Special Stages is to jump a second early before you hit a bomb, since Tails jumps about a second after you do

@@waltercomunello121 On the re-released versions, it's a great strategy. For those that played the original on the Genesis, Tails was practically necessary because of the terrible hit boxes on the rings. Playing Sonic alone, you would struggle to get enough rings even if you didn't get hit because he would only get a couple of rings going through a grouping of 5-10 if they weren't in a straight line. Also of note is the fact that your rings would be reset to zero at the end of the special stage.
If you plugged in the Sonic and Knuckles cart, it seems like the developers actually acknowledged this, because he goes through the same special stages, but his ring requirement for each section of a special stage was about 10 rings lower than usual.
I love in this game, you can just constantly hear the "blun" sad note that means Tails just died. Really adds to the score.

Yeah, Tails' pathfinding was really fucked up for some reason, but according to other comments it was apparently fixed very recently. I think I remember a twitter thread saying that it had to do with something like Tails trying to input a Drop Dash when you do, even though he obviously can't do that or something? Just really weird fuckups in Origins
I laughed so hard when Choc saw grounder and with such a childlike happiness said “Hey it’s Grounder!” and Tails speeds by and merks him without warning 🤣

When I was younger, I straight up said no to the chaos emeralds and just did the bad ending run each time. Don't think I've ever got the good ending yet, I guess I'll try with some time on the mobile version. 🤷♂️

Technically you can get Super Sonic by the end of Emerald Hill Zone Act 2 if you use every checkpoint in the first and second act. Probably how speedrunners would do an all-emerald run as well, but I wouldn't know XD
It's called Emerald Hill for a reason ;)
Actually, you only need to use 7 of the 8 checkpoints in Emerald Hill, giving you that extra checkpoint if you fail one

Sonic 2 is definitely a good one. Felt so satisfying beating the game for the first time especially with the Choas emeralds.

Sonic 2 was the first video game I ever played, it holds a special place in my heart. My cousins introduced it to me, I was immediately hooked, and my mother was immediately horrified.

Another hedgehog was there 50 years ago. (Or is it 46 years ago at this point? Sonic CD’s manual says Amy is 8 and she is 12 by the time of Sonic Adventure, but Sonic has always been 15 even in the classic games. Time is weird in Sonic.)
If I remember correctly, Amy turned 12 because of some time magic spell. Not sure tho, I just heard about this once some time ago

Yeah, Choc demonstrated the reason I don't have Tails tag along when playing as Sonic. He makes the Special Stages so much more difficult by constantly running into bombs!

That put sooo much nostalgia through me. Sonic 2 is one of the greatest games of all time, period. For real for real, Sonic was in his prime with this one. I have yet to beat it, though. Once I get Sonic Origins for myself, I'll hopefully be redeemed. Sonic 2 was tough for me, though. Chemical Plant Zone in particular. Ugh.

A bit late, but the whole Super Sonic transformation thing is a new addition by Origins, you need to press a button *different* from the one you use to jump, unlike the original where you just double tap.
Weird, but it allows you to keep Super Sonic safely instead of accidentally wasting it by spamming jump.

The little fire ball guys in Hill Top zone always put me about when playing Sonic as a kid. So when I first played Pokémon Yellow at like age 10 I refused to ever catch a voltorb as it reminded me so much of those pesky things.

For the original versions, double tapping jump makes you go Super Sonic. But for Origins, the button to make you go Super Sonic is the same as the Sonic games, like Generations, which is square in the air.
They did this because you see, Knuckles and Tails can also go Super, and they're kind of inconvenienced by the fact.
OG Sonic 2 was just jump with 50 rings.

@Choc, Sonic 1 had six chaos emeralds, Sonic 2 was the game that introduced the seventh and the ability to go super. If you want to get into headcanon plot weeds, that explains why there's no super form in the original, because Sonic could never get them all and thus never unlocked the power. :V
(we don't talk about super emeralds in 3&K.)

I'm pretty sure the death egg in the ending cutscene fell to angel island. Explaining why eggman was there in Sonic 3

tip: Super Sonic is kinda like a bullet. if you practice enough, you can direct him anywhere almost straight across a couple screens. that allows you to skip wide gaps with a single jump. if you manage to get Super Sonic in Emerald Hill you can go so fast in certain parts of Chemical Plant that you can escape the camera.
if you havent allready read another comment telling you this theres a secret zone if you take the bottom path of mystic cave act 2 and fall down a certain pit you get taken to a zone that was cut in sonic 2 but added for the 2013 mobile release (origins uses the same port) the zone was originally intended as a place to go when you get all the chaos emeralds as a test before you unlock super sonic but its just a fun secret now
