THE hole in Mystic Cave Zone Act 2 - Sonic 2

- We all know what it is. It's THAT hole.
The only reason I uploaded this simple clip was because there wasn't anything like it on the Internet. And seeing as I was recording something like it, I could might as well use Admiral Ackbar's famous line.
Also, slight ear rape at 0:21.
For those who don't understand it:
Once Sonic collects all 7 Chaos Emeralds (and 50 rings), he can turn into Super Sonic, which is invulnerable to damage. Spikes hurt Sonic, but not Super Sonic. There is a pit in this act that has spikes on the bottom, and there is no way out. If you're regular Sonic, you'll hit the spikes, lose all rings, die and continue with the game. If you're Super Sonic, however, you won't get hurt to begin with, so you need to wait for your rings to run out (one per second) until you're vulnerable again.

The fact that the mobile version removed the spikes and turned the pit into a secret level is great.
The secret zone is a removed level of the original sonic 2

I was thinking there would be a hidden path to get out that pit. I have the game on my phone and I have fallen down that hole which is the Hidden Palace. This could be to make the game enjoyable.

No, that pit was the entrance to Hidden Palace, but you might know, that Hidden Palace didn't finished, because there was not enough MB ob the Modules. In Android and iOS there is the entrance.

You should've let the video play at normal speed the whole way, just so everyone can get the full effect. The hopelessness. The despair. All you can do is watch those rings count down.
And that is why I always would take the high route.

Only one way to escape the pit is use debug mode

That is probably why that hole is now a Hidden Palace. That is a secret zone and another way to complete the level.

The developers simply ported the mobile versions of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to Sonic Origins

That first pit was supposed to lead you to Hidden Palace Zone but that level was deleted so that pit became the pit of doom.
Not really, the hidden palace zone was supposed to appear once you have collected all 7 chaos emeralds, so yeah.. the pit was planned from the start

I hate that pit. XD Simple annoyances like this are always remembered in classic games like this. Can't forget the Barrel in Carnival Night Act 2 in Sonic 3 or when the game thinks you hit a pit in Ice Caps (the part when you're sliding down without the ice rock that breaks the wall)

In the iPhone and iPod Touch version the spike pit got replaced with a level that was never in sonic 2

I don't even remember that hole as a kid. a few years ago, I decided to Crack out the old genesis, and play through sonic 2. I went from not even knowing the pit of doom was there as a kid, to not being able to avoid it as an adult.
So glad it eventually got repurposed into a secret entrance to a previously unfinished level…!

The unescapable damaging floor before Doom.
Imagine having hundreds of rings while being super sonic while down in the spike pit. The only way out without waiting or dying is with debug cheat. Still not as bad as a part of Alex Kidd if you die you are trapped in a certain place with no way out forceing you to start the game over again or quitting.

The Entrance Way to the Prototype Hidden Palace Zone
The best part of Sonic origins is this is now the entrance to secret Palace zone.

I've been caught in that pit so many times. I've lost count and it's not like you can restart the level because the developers didn't think of that :< Well think about it, it's not all bad. You can take a shit and not have to worry about something killing you for a minute XD
This is just as annoying as the Barrel on Sonic 3 XD Or in Ice Cap when you're falling down the slick snow and the game thinks you fell in a pit because you're going too fast. Little annayances are always long lived XD

Uh... no, Sonic games on Genesis couldn't support such features thanks to the hardware of the console, it could had such a thing in other games, but with Sonic series at the time, were just too much for the console to handle such thinga

***** Yes, Hidden Palace was incomplete at the time the game came out, but my point was that Mystic Cave "PIT OF THE FUCKING DEATH" wasn't the way to get ascess to HPz, in one of the many interviews of the game devs (Interviews leaded by SonicRetro)
They said HPz was going to be a zone where the player was going to be teleported in after collecting the chaos emerals, but the only "Teleportation" mechanic in the game is both the Teleport Box in 2p race and the Starpost portal that leaded to the Chaos Emerald "minigame" so is left to believe that the player was going to hit the startpost with the 50 rings and entering the Emerald minigame, only to be surprised that they just entered in a portal to a hidden zone. (Something like the Rainbow Giant Ring in S3&K)

Well, you're all wrong. The Mega Drive could support such features, the stage was incomplete and was never planned as the entry to HPZ.

Did this exact thing, but with Knuckles in Super mode, AFTER having let the bridge down. I figured I might be able to climb back up, and maybe the bottom of the bridge would let me pass, but to no avail. :(
There's a hole just like this in the first Metroid game, down in Norfair, except it takes exponentially longer to die because Samus can have hundreds of energy units and the Varia that halves damage...

worst part is theres a lot of rings in mystic cave, with the lightning shield very close to the start so you are most likely to be super at that time

This could so easily turn into analog horror if you give sonic a lot of rings for example stuck in super form in the pit of doom. No escape.. having to wait seconds to die having the urge to burst out of insanity while desperately trying to find a way out.
In the mobile version you won't die and be stuck there you will fall into a ditch and go to hidden palace zone with new enemy's and a boss this was originally cut from the original Genesis version
