I read and study and watch yours and others videos. It is quite the thing to see, how you keep up on so many hives. Multiple honey pulls through out the season, treatments, feeding, rearing queens, there is never a shortage of things to do. I’d love to quit plumbing and keep bees full time. I need many more hives before that can happen. Excellent video once again. Nice job and congrats on your great season. It’s all hard work and hustle, like anything else in life that’s worth a damn. I love the uniformity of the clusters! Don’t be modest, their something to be proud of! Fantastic strategy you have in your area! Better get back to pulling my honey!! 💪🏻😊💥🐝🐝🐝
Fantastic blog and the timing for me is great as in Australia we are just coming out of winter and I am trying to put into practice what you are doing. Thank you from West Australia South Coast
Yes....everything comes full circle...the cycle of life....I’m amazed...I never get that kind of population in my hives....and it’s not without effort....we must all be thankful for whatever is provided...God gives what He thinks we can manage...

Hey Ian ..thought you would find this kind of cool.....The senate building in Ottawa..has installed 13 bee hives on there roof (1for each Prov.and Terr.)..there being maintained by the staff of the Chateau Laurea..(5 star hotel)..and the honey is being served in there dinning room...just thought it was cool
Just watched a Netflix documentary on the series called unwell about bee stings and bee venom this might be the time of year for you to be able to harvest bee venom depending on how hard that may be thanks again for the insights into your bee keeping
Good morning, I recently started owning hives this year by accident, a friend got ill and he gave me 2 hives and after a short while I had to split them and make a third. Your videos are a tremendous tool for learning, I noticed you feeding and adding patties to prepare for the winter, I have also started this. Can you feed the hives in the winter if you store them in a walk in cooler? I happen to own a warehouse and we have a small walk in that is not used and I was wondering if the colonies would benefit from a controlled environment of 1 degree Celsius for the winter months. I could provide feed all winter in the form of syrup but I wouldn't open the hives up to add patties and basically leave them in the dark from late october to april/ may when the temp is suitable. Any advice would be appreciated. I never knew that this activity would be so rewarding. I don't plan on getting more hives, I just want to make sure that these ones are healthy and sustainable. I have them located by Little Mountain Park at our truck shop and they seem to be thriving. Thank you.
Is there no such thing as a late season alfalfa/ golden rod flow out there? Or is it just too unpredictable to risk having your hives fall behind on the winter nest?
question time always the factor if you did have time to harvest the bees how would you do the job from the assemble boxes to be able to put bee inside future video's
Hey Ian, Is there a difference between canola vs. rapeseed for the bees? Which one do you plant and why? Thanks for the videos and the plethora of knowledge! Love the videos.
Go back and watch all Ian's videos you can see exactly what hes doing and when...there is a video of him explaining dates and his thinking and planning for the whole season
End of the honey flow. Oh no you've already feeding bees you know what that means what comes next. Old man winter It'll be here soon. The next couple of months I get to see you get stuck and I get to see the big red tractor come pull you out.. Lol
If you make up 12 new NUCs of bee that does not seem like allot of work to me. I think you need to ask yourself do I need them for next year. What was your hive die off this year? It didn't look like you had many.
Ive treated my bees for mites with strips. Some books states that you leave the strips for 10-14 days, yet others say 2-3 days at this time of the year (august in Hamilton Ontario) any thoughts?
Sort of like the parallel for when jobs get turned over to robots and artificial intelligence. 5:07 The excess workers might be viewed as expendable by the powers that be?
Love the videos they have changed the way I manage my apiary excellent content question how many gallons of syrup would you say on average it takes you to prep your winter nest and also how many pounds of pollen supplement I know it differs by location but trying to achieve 90to 100 pounds first time single brood chamber don’t want it to be a complete failure trying to achieve brilliance and excellence as you do thanks
What about putting the extra bees in queenless hives and just foundation. They can draw out comb for next year . They help you with minimal effort since the will all die anyway.
5:00 Was going to ask why you don't leave them with a bit more of their own honey for insurance vs taking it all and setting up syrup. But this answers the question.
When you say the winter nest is setup. What does that look like Ian. What do u mean?

Could you show us a close up of the pails? I’m maybe wanting to use the same system but what kind of feeding hole is in the bucket lids? Looks like a hole with mesh? Hope to see it in in of your next video’s :) Grtz Jurgen from NL
Jurgen Uffink Betterbee.com sells pails similar to that. I use them to feed my hives too. I’m actually going to start feeding like Ian does, through a hole on the top of a migrating lid. Then you don’t have to have hive boxes to cover them.
Primitive Daisy I live in The Netherland. We use totally different systems here in NL ( expensive feeder trays and tops and so on). I’ve even never seen sombody using external pail like systems here. Haven’t even seen migratory lids ether, I made migratory lids for some hives to test them out. Idea for me is to make the pails my self to keep costs down :) ordering pails from abroad is to expensive I think.
I was curious how windy it is there if he had a problem with them falling over or off the hives . We are too windy at times here in northeast wouldn’t think they would work . I love my top feeders inside I can use them for liquid and dry throughout the whole season.
