This was written between the guitarist Jane Weidlin and British singer Terry Hall of the Specials, they were having an affair and it wasn't very secretive, he wrote her a letter and some of the lyrics were included. They then created a song out of it.
Not only did The Go Gos then record it but so did Terry Halls band Fun Boy Three(they sound a little different) but both bands had a hit with their version at the same time.

I absolutely *love* the Fun Boy Three version. It's darker and more downbeat than the Go-Gos (which I also like, just not as much), and Terry Hall's lugubrious voice gives the song a very different feel.

The early 80's were the Saturday morning on the modern era. Bright, sunny, innocent but action packed and lots of cartoon colors. The best part about the music was that it still required real singing and playing, so even the pop stuff had soul and staying power. The drums had swing and bounce, the guitars and vocals had humanity in them. Every track a one of a kind slice of goodness committed to tape and transferred to vinyl. Think I'll go back for another listen.

True story, I was a cashier in SoCal [1997] in a State wide Home Improvement store. Jane Wiedlin (Bassist for The Go-Gos) came through my line, twice, both in the same day. I knew who she was, she knew I knew who she was. I didn't say a word or draw any attention to her. I treated her with the same respect as all are other customers. That's why she came through my line the 2nd time. That 2nd time, she made deliberate eye contact with me, with soft appreciative eyes. She never once carried herself in such a manner that a lot of celebrities do.

The guitarist had a secret romance with a man from another group who had a girlfriend. When The GoGo's came back to the States, he sent her the lyrics to this song, she liked them. She finished them & said it was about their time together. They would never talk about it, so their lips were sealed.
