As a huge Hair band guy in the 80’s I despised this song and pretty much everything done by her. It wasn’t until later in life when I realized what a unique and beautiful voice this woman has. Not only that she is as genuine and as sweet a person as she portrays in her videos. I spent 23 years as a catering chef, I won’t name the company I worked for but I worked the Hollywood Bowl every summer, and had a chance to meet her. Now I’m a forever fanboy of hers.

She held off doing this song until the end, then recruited girls from the audience to join her in a conga line and sing "They just wanna, they just wannnnaaaaaa". • @metalmark1214

This was Cyndi Lauper's first single as a solo artist. She released an album in 1981 as a member of the group Blue Angel, but "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" made her famous.
The song was a huge part of '80s culture. It became an anthem for female attitude and set fashion trends as the video showed Lauper wearing bright, outrageous clothes that looked like they came from a thrift store (they often did). It set the stage for artists like Madonna: independent women wearing cheap, yet fashionable clothes with a taste for garish accessories. Lauper co-wrote many of her own songs, but not this one. Like "I Will Survive," it's a girl power song written by a man. A Philadelphia singer/songwriter named Robert Hazard, who had a band called Robert Hazard and the Heroes, wrote it. Hazard recorded his demo of the song in 1979. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Lauper said that she had to alter the lyrics from Hazard's original. "It was originally about how fortunate he was 'cause he was a guy around these girls that wanted to have 'fun' - with him - down there, which we do not speak lest we go blind," she said.

Cyndi Lauper has such an incredibly powerful voice. You should see some of her live performances. Her voice will blow you away. In the 80s, Madonna was huge, but Cyndi ruled. And she is even credited with influencing a lot of modern women artists today.

Cyndi and Madonna broke out around the same time. Many wondered which one would have the bigger career. Madonna proved to be the one to go on to reinvent herself as times changed, making movies, and on to superstardom. Cyndi pretty much faded as a symbol of the 1980’s.

The magic of her sound, her incredible vocal range, the positivity of the message, and the personal freedom she inspires, it's all musical perfection. She apparently had been working in a band for a long time trying to make it, more rock and roll stuff, and at one point she went to several doctors thinking she'd lost it forever, and then finally blew up as a solo artist. Love you guys reacting to her, awesome stuff.

The cultural impact of this song cannot be overstated - it was one of the early mega-hits on MTV, and launched Lauper into superstardom. I know you've reacted to some of her other work, but I don't think you've done "All Through the Night" yet - I would highly, highly recommend that one as it's my favorite song by her. Cyndi was one of the true icons of the 80's - she changed music, fashion, and from everything I've ever heard was a truly kind-hearted woman. What a legend!

The unique instrument sound is that of a xylophone, played by striking tuned pieces of metal (similar to the concept of a steel drum, but different). : ) Of course, everything can be electronically replicated these days.

I think it’s a synthesizer. Early 80s was big on synths and new digital synths like the Yamaha DX7 were used heavily in music production of that era. Mallet type sounds are easy to make and sound good on analog and digital synths. On this recording it sounds like a synth to me.

I have a story for everything. I had a '01 Pontiac Trans-Am WS6 with a Monsoon stereo system. This is equivalent to a Bang & Olfeson system today. I had T-tops off, nearly a Targa or GTS. I played this cranked going down Main Street 20 years ago. Because boys want to have fun and watch pedestrians. But, Cyndi was fun, touching and introspective. She was very popular in the '80's. Still a great singer.

Cyndi's voice is really the style of the "Power singer"...Top of your lungs, and let it out! The crazy noises :Lex is talking about is actually wood percussion blocks with a LOT of studio EQ and echo. (recording engineers where wizards of thier craft-- Back then, every label had an ace or two working the control room..That's why they got producer credit on every record).

In a way, she did something similar in the 80's to what Lady Gaga did. She decided to go completely goof-ball and off-the-wall. After her success, she decided she wanted to do some more "adult" (regular adult, not sexy adult) singing, and it's very different.
