What can I do to better my chances of getting into a great college as a sophomore going to Junior having only taken 2 AP Spanish classes. I want to take 4 AP classes junior year but I’m not sure if I should, I wanted to see if I can take any classes in summer to show me what I would be getting into.

Hi Brook, thank you a million for many great, great tips on a whole range of college admission topics. I am currently working with my third child on her college application. I am probably in a very small minority but I strongly advocate that students need to explore their interests way before the summer before their senior year. It was really easy with my oldest since he knew he wanted to do cancer research since he was 10 years old. He is now a Ph.D candidate in a top cancer research institute. My second was much harder. She tried everything starting as a Freshman and nothing struck her fancy until her senior year when she took an econ class and that was it. My third one is also fairly easy. She is a natural when it comes to engineering. So she is applying as an AI and mechanical engineering double major. It's really important that students not only find their interests but they actually test that out (by participating in extracurricular activities or working for a college professor) before deciding what they are going to major in. Sometimes students, and adults too, can watch a Ted talk or meet someone who inspires them in a profession. They may think oh it is so cool to be whatever (fill in the blank) but when they actually get into it they find out it isn't quite as fun and exciting as they thought. I had a boss who went Caltech and worked for JPL as an astrophysicist on the Apollo program. He later changed his mind and got an MBA from UCLA. He told me the work he was doing for the Apollo program was bone dry. But he did not know even as he was studying astrophysics at Caltech!!

Question about Letters of Recommendation -- we have heard that it is best to get teachers from core academic subjects. What if student wants to go into computer science - that subject is not considered a core academic subject. Wouldn't the teacher of that subject (AP Computer Science Principles/AP Computer Science A) still be appropriate to write one of the letters, even thought computer science is not a core subject? Thanks!

@@RFJersey, I actually agree. But looking back on my time applying to colleges as a first gen, underrepresented minority, rural high schooler, I made so many mistakes that weren't necessary.

@@RFJersey LOL. This was pre-Internet. I'm so old I invented dirt. I did fine. I'm more concerned for the poor youth who don't even know there's something to research. I volunteer in the schools and meet some of those students.
