A state of mind, dealing with homesickness, loneliness, depression and anxiety with wild camping.

- EDIT... I filmed this 7 years ago, three years after the death of my amazing wife. Whilst I was not depressive nor anxious as such. I did suffer terrible homesickness which was very debilitating. These days I'm happy to get out lol but still miss that company. and still stick to areas I know well. thankfully I can stay out longer now.
The story of my late wife is now on Blogger....
A chatty video edited out of my UL Dartmoor camp.
I get that funny feeling the night before, and when I wake up, and it's not all that pleasant, I could certainly do without it. What I am pleased with is that it goes as the day progresses, it just "spoils" the start of the day.
It is also one reason I try to camp not a million miles from the car. Having said that, I'm a hiker / camper. Parking the car, walking 100 feet and pitching doesn't appeal. I prefer to enjoy the day hiking (or half day!) then pitching.
One day, I'll try two nights alone. But I don't think it will be that soon.
Hi tony, excellent weather, great location and a nice video. Thanks for sharing. Rob
Spot on David :-) Good luck to you and yours. Glad you both enjoy the videos.
A fascinating read indeed, thanks Richard.
Tony, Really enjoyed this video, thanks for letting us get to know you better.
Thanks Ben, good to know you guys are out there.
A very personal video, thanks for sharing Tony. I can relate to the home sickness, I tend to get home sick when the weather is bad or I'm having a tough moment while out on a trip
Tony, I've felt like you have before...pretty normal. Many obvious reasons to feel funny in the Outdoors by yourself, but then nature and time get us over the hump.
Thanks Matt :)
Its good to share.
Yes, I'm really lucky to have such fabulous subscribers, a truly inspirational group.
Thanks for kind words. Mostly I make it up as I go :-)
Your videos are great Tony, full of honesty, pathos and humanity.
That's without even mentioning your walking, camping, gear reviews, hints and tips (intentional or otherwise re spot something incidental in the background and think ahhh thats how you do it or whatever) and the gear lists too, invaluable to people wether just starting out or even more experienced folk (always good to compare with others etc)
Keep doing what you are doing, seems there is a great community here!
hiya, probably wait but see. For now Bess has me, Gizzy and my folks. I'd like to get a border collie. but again need to see. Thanks for your very kind
message, means a lot :)
THanks Dean, yes, the weather especially alone makes a massive difference. I try to be brave and say rain and wind fine but there is no enjoyment, esp alone I'm sure, and makes it tough. It was one reason I stopped early last hike. Then the sun came out :-)
Tony, thanks for taking the time to make this video. Things are a bit different, but I can definitely relate to feeling homesick when out and not with loved ones...
As for hiking with others... if I am ever in your neighborhood, we definitely gotta hike together! :)
Hi Tony. I'm sure I ave seen your videos before and I cant understand why i have not subscribed to your channel before this? This is a very thought provoking video and for me it made me think about things personal to me. Thanks for sharing this and all the very best to you. Take care my friend.
Sinclair.
Excellent reply, thanks, yes, roaming Dartmoor feels as close to home as its possible, especially alone, so for now, that's where I'll roam, matters not where, jut getting out in the wilds. Don't worry about water! There's a ton of it on Dartmoor and its quite safe. Treat with any method you prefer. If you're out for a week, something more than just a poncho not a bad idea ;-)
Yeah high winds and rain sometimes removes some of the enjoyment factor. If I'm on a multiple day hike then I suppose you have to roll with the punches and carry on... If it's just a single night out from home I'd much rather it be a more relaxed affair especially now days when my walks/camps are often alone. Good weather enhances any situation :-) thanks again for sharing this video, all the best.
Being alone means destination and route to it is up to me. Getting it right is neat, getting it wrong, a lesson. I never got tired of learning & always went back for more. So far, I always got home again! Finding an entirely agreeable companion is not impossible but perhaps rare & I'm wary of irritants so any companion is rare! I'm also aware of journeys better for sharing. You'll know that one. We live & learn by experience. If one suffers, the rest suffer, so I reckon we have to make all good!
It's the primary reason I check forecast to at least generally aim for good weather. Temperature not an issue as much more wind and rain.
Chad, we gotta do that one day, definitely :-) Hell, Mississippi isn't that far away lol! I used to visit the USA for the fun of it with my folks back in the day.
Its probably similar "feelings" we get for different reasons. But I certainly had your feeling whenever Sue and I were apart. I did two solo walks when she visited her folks alone and it was miserable. She coped without me much better than I ever did without her. Thanks for watching and commenting. See ya!
Home is where the 'heart' is Tony.. If you're heart is happiest on the moor... that's where you should roam! I have 2 weeks to go ...and the I'll be on Dartmoor for the week .from Okehampton to Iveybridge...a bit worried about water! as the the heat is up at the moment.. I wish I'd got a tarpe like yours now! rather than the Banshee200 .... on well!
