- It was a match that swung both ways with Casper Ruud first taking advantage of a slow start by Holger Rune, before eventually having to hold off a fightback from the young Dane. For the second year in a row, Ruud will be playing for a place in the French Open final and as last year’s runner-up he’s looking to go one better than he did in 2022 and win the title at Roland-Garros.

It's amazing how Ruud seems to save his best tennis for (some of) the big tournaments. He seems to glide through the draw unnoticed, and suddenly he's in the semis or final.
so unnoticed that he forgot to ask Nadal for an autograph last year and will be upset if in this years final he won't get one either
That’s true but both times he reached GS final he usually had an easy draw. Nevertheless it’s weird he hasn’t won anything besides 250

@@robert111k I do too, it was another time tho. Swedish tennis has fallen from grace, and I'm still a fan of the Ymer brothers. But reality is we have gone from the by far strongest tennis country in Scandinavia to the weakest.

You can tell Ruud draws inspiration from Rafael Nadal because the way he is playing on clay now heavily resembles the way rafa hits the ball.. I'm mostly impressed by Ruud's game this year's Roland Garros and hope he'll be able to win RG this year.
I know that he says his inspiration is Nadal but when I watch him play it always reminds me of David Ferrer a lot more than Nadal

I agree his game resembles Rafa. Too bad he can't take the advantage of a lefty, bringing that slice serve to the opponent's backhand.

Ruud was switched on from start but Rune was too slow off the blocks.A bit reserved and in the shell and Ruud capitalized on that with amazing first 2 sets
Casper Ruud deserved the match to the end and just focused on his work. It would be better if Holger did his job instead of the show. Now he should think twice before plugging his ear.

A satisfying win. Nice when the arrogant and self-absorbed player loses to a classier guy. Especially pleasing is that Ruud is simply way more fit, and Rune at 20 has no excuse for that.

I think cos he was losing and they wanted to see a proper match.
Also the crowd wanted a closer match. The first 2 sets were dominated by Rudd because Rune played horribly.
Probably because they had payed big bucks to watch this match, and didn't want it to be over after 1h30.

Highly entertaining match. Many differences between those two but the one that struck me the most on a technical level was the overhead. Ruud, a classic clay court player with a mainly defensive baseline game, hit every overhead with precision and won the points while the more aggressive, power player Rune hit relatively weak overheads, not fitting of his talent or ranking. It just shows that some things are a matter of focus, practice and being serious towards yourself and your game.

Casper is at home on the clay, hopefully he can become a mini king of clay, I rate him highly. If he ends up playing Djokovic or Alcaraz he will have to play deep to the court, otherwise those two will eat him up. I backed him to win the title from the start, I still think he can do it if he plays smart and Zverev will be no easy match either. He plays similar to Rafa on clay but he doesn't use the slice much like Rafa and Rafa's backhand is better but he's learning and improving all the time.
Rune played the worst hour of tennis in the first two sets, it was so painful to watch. Then he finally showed up and played his A game but still made some bad decisions in the fourth, plus the serving really let him down in this match. I thought he’s come a long way since last year in terms of mental game and maturity but obviously he still has a lot to learn.
Ruud was just very solid and he surprised me with some great defence. I also like his personality, unfortunately his tennis is quite boring and I don’t think he can do any damage to either Alcaraz or Djokovic. I hope Zverev wins the semi, it would be really good for him after last year’s terrible ending.

Oh, no one is doubting that Ruud won't win the title. Never won a tournament of the 500/1000 category still. Ruud is a really good player and very likeable but he won't be a real GS contender

In the first two sets, Rune continued his bad play from the previous match. After that, he and Ruud were even in most aspects - the deciding factor being Rune's poor serving (a first serve percentage below 40 in the fourth set is disastrous against a guy like Ruud). All in all, we haven't seen a Holger Rune at his very best in this tournament.

No idea, but those big 5-setters take their toll. He probably was not at his peak condition but equally Ruud was dictating a lot of the tennis and maintained sheer consistent pressure which then ground Rune down even more?

Not to mention Rune has, overall, much more potential than Ruud, especially against the Top5.

Pedro Silva has a solid point here. Ruud is likeable but he is just a snack in the finals of the bigger tournaments. Never won a tournament of the 500/1000 category. Last year against Nadal he was a complete tourist as well. But he will have more trouble with Zverev
If Sascha keeps the momentum, and play like last year SF, he can win. He would have won last year if he wasn't injured.
Didn't see any potential in Rune today. No way he could bring a solid game against Djoko or Alcaraz.

Boring match, Rune still has a lot to go with experience, and Ruud was just playing as always since last year. No surprise here.
I was amazed how mentally weak Rune is.
Also, I had thought about his shotmaking skills way to highly. His volleying was downright terrible, and he made so many stupid decisions on clutch points!
Way to go for him if he wants to reach major finals one day.
I guess if you don't follow or understand tennis you could find that match boring. Why not stick to sports you know something about?
