  • Lotus vs Porsche - which one makes the best mid-engine, driver-focused sports car? That's the question I'm going to try to answer today. I recently had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a 2012 Porsche Cayman R and a 2006 Lotus Elise--both on the same day. Since opportunities like this don't come often, I thought it'd be fun to compare the two and see how they stack up against each other. Let's just say, I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

    Great summary of the differences and the use cases. When I was considering a weekend fun car, I drove a Cayman GT4 (as well as 911 turbo and GT3). I thought they were all great. Then I tried a V6 Exige and an Elise. The Exige was the most extreme and very impressive, but a bit much for road use. I instantly fell in love with the Elise. It’s the most fun I’ve had on four wheels and is the closest to the racing kart I had as a kid. I don’t think anything will come along that can replace it.

      Elise is truly something else. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel again

      Living it ! I have an Elise and an Evora S… The Evora is more powerful, faster in a straight line than the Elise and it corners like a Lotus should …But the Elise truly has my heart. It gives me a buzz like no other car I’ve ever driven. Most everything else feels like a barge in comparison.

      Thanks for the video and the enthusiasm! I had a gen 1 997gt3 for three years and have now sold it for an elise. Don't regret it one bit, more fun at saner speeds, very direct, love it!! The gt3 was great but to have fun you have to be on the track, ... or in jail! Cant recommend the Lotus enough, most car and fun for your money. Not expensive to run. Grab one while you can as they've stopped making them. And, .... you can take the roof off!! Come on!

    I keep going back to watch this video, it's just one of my favourites! I just love the raw sound of that 2ZZ-GE and your very enthusiastic reaction (the way you giggle) is just priceless! I had trouble finding it this time around though, because when you updated the thumbnail, it shows both Porsche Caymans and no Lotus Elise. I really thought you deleted it! I finally found it again by going by the title instead of the thumbnail.
    Cheers and keep up the great work!

      WOW no idea how that thumbnail got updated incorrectly. Thanks for the heads up, we'll be fixing shortly and making sure this never happens again :)

    That Lotus sounds so fantastic. Would much rather have it over the dull Porsche.

      I wouldn’t say the P car is “dull” exactly. It’s more refined and less visceral than an Elise but an amazing sports car all the same. I’ve driven many P cars but have never been an owner and it’s definitely on my bucket list . Meanwhile, my weapon of choice is my Elise 😊

    Fun video and welcome to the Lotus appreciation club! haha
    Just a quick correction on your "Mods" notes for the Lotus. The stock touring/base wheels are 16x5.5 F/17x7.5 R and that's what those are. The LSS option had lighter wheels that were an inch wider up front. Also 10% stiffer springs.
    Love your excitement, that's how I feel driving mine!

    • @kimolas
      @kimolas Před 11 měsíci

      The LSS wheels were only an inch wider for the first year or two of them being sold in the US, which is why you always check when buying LSS wheels what width the fronts are.

    Great video---you really pushed the Elise so obviously it connected with you the best. I drive a 2004 JCW mini so using an Elise as a daily would be fine by me.

    • @BlatentlyFakeName
      @BlatentlyFakeName Před rokem +1

      I used an S2 Elise as a daily for almost a year. Other than the noise (you need ear plugs for longer drives, otherwise you get ear fatigue). If the bodywork gets damaged you can't just simply swap panels. It's all handmade fiberglass and sometimes tailored to that specific car, so it's very expensive to put right.

    A while i was thinking to buy a used Porsche 718 Boxster but if i would do that, i would have to sell my S2000 to have enough money and after 13 years i still love it to much to leave it. But as a car lover i wanted something else as a hobby car too.
    So i kept the S2000 and maybe in the future i'll buy a Porsche, maybe not.
    I'am not the youngest anymore(57) but i'am healthy enough to get in and out a Lotus and since last week i own a 2006 Lotus Elise R and when the 220SC came out the previous owner bought the original Lotus supercharger kit for her, so my Elise has 220HP like a Elise 220SC.
    I haven't driven many miles in it yet but it is a real go-kart for the road!!!🥰😛 I also have a daily used Mini F56 JCW(year 2015) and MINI has the slogan "Go kart feeling" but it is not a Go-kart like the Elise, far away from that.
    I love my S2000 on cornering roads very much, it has KW V3 suspension and it handles very well but comparing to the Elise even the S2000 is not a Go-kart.
    I still love my S2000 very much but with the Elise there is a another love in my life!❤

    The Elise is way more driver focused. Though technically these cars aren't in the same catagory. The Elise is a sports car, almost a track car. The Cayman is a GT.
    BTW don't lift off mid corner in the old Elises. They don't like that 😁
