ASME PTC 19.3 Thermowell Calculation of Taper Ratio

Thermowell can be tapered or straight .
This criteria is defined in ASME PTC 19.3 Which defines the taper ratio and the limits that we can use for taper ratio calculation.
the criteria is to keep the taper ratio between 0.58 to 1.

Superb information.. thanks...I have questions about thermowell ..how to select stright, tappered,step type and shap size and insertions lenth .any more calculation in thermowell.??? Interviewers akses calculetion of thermowell.

Good question !!
One of the basis to decide this is the client Design basis.
However, in our industry the most widely used thermowell is tapered TWs.
Like a similar example is that of thermowell connection, usually we have flanged thermowell but for certain special cases we could go for welded design but this depends on client preference.
This is as per best of my current understanding.
Hope some engineers can shed more light on to this subject 🙂
