I still remember the day I got Star Fox. It was late winter and it had just snowed in Virginia. I knew my mom would be taking me to the mall to get my new prescription for my glasses, and I really wanted Star Fox that had just come out. So I woke up early in the morning with my snow shovel and went around shoveling drive ways for $5 a piece. I managed to get ten sidewalks done so I didn't have enough...but the last driveway I did was my friend's house and his mom gave me the rest of the money I needed. I just remember after getting my new glasses, I ran down to the Electronics Boutique at the mall and go there just as they were getting ready to close (as it was a Sunday), and I handed over my money and got my game. It was actually the first game I had ever bought for myself with my own money. And I treasured it because of that.
Star Fox 64 was a special game too. Back then we couldn't afford to get a lot of games, so I would often just rent them from the video store and play them over a weekend, often getting my fill. But sadly Star Fox 64 was one of those games that rarely ever available at Hollywood Video, Blockbuster, or the local family video shops. Eventually I gave up. But my mom was one of the most generous people I ever knew. I got back home from school one day, and she had gotten it for me. No special occasion or reason, just because. She's been gone for 20 years now, but I will never forget her kindness and generosity. I try to give as much as I can to the people in my life in her memory.
I love hearing stories like this! I have a lot of similar ones myself of getting up early and mowings lawns and chopping wood to buy video games back then.

I recommend (Astebreed) it's a very intense space shooter.
Just want to point out that in Star Fox Adventures, General Scales didn't work together with Andross' spirit/ghost but Andross was taking advantage of Scales' plan and Fox's involvement to revive himself from the dead. Scales were pretty much unaware of Andross until the very end when he attempted to assault Fox in The Krazoa Palace, after Fox have returned the Spell Stones to the Volcano and Ocean Force Point Temples and gotten nearly all the Krazoa Spirits back to the Krazoa Palace. He revealed himself just as the both of them were about to fight when he interviened, revealed himself (though not by name but Fox afterwards recognized the voice, only realizing it after Andross' rebirth when he was attacking him in Dinosaur Planet's orbit) to the General and forced him to give the last Krazoa spirit to Fox, in order to make his revival possible.
Star Fox instantly got my attention with it's 3D visuals and being a fan of Star Wars, military aircraft and fictional spacecraft. As I got older my favorite Nintendo series transitioned from Super Mario Bros to Star Fox and Metroid, their respective leads are now my favorite Nintendo characters. I was really looking forward to this video and I wasn't disappointed, great work!

Star Fox Assault will always be my favorite in the series.
It’s a highly underrated game that really deserved better.
Assault isn't the worst Star Fox, but in a world with Star Fox Command and Star Fox Zero, that's a low bar.
@@PaulvonOberstein Star Fox Command was one of my biggest gaming disappointments. Once I finally managed to save up for a DS Lite in my early adulthood, I got that game as my first game with it...and it blew so hard.
I should probably replay it, my first game was Adventures when I was a kid and I loved it so going into Assault thinking it was going to be "Adventures 2" really put me off and I believe I quickly returned it before completing it. Turns out it was the remnants of Dinosaur Planet that I liked so much about Adventures.

My most fond and happy memories with this series was playing Star Fox Assault on the multi-player mode with some friends on Katina Outpost.
Such a great game with an actual serviceable story, and definitely the best gameplay. Transition between on foot, vehicle and aerial combat was awesome and it even had on-rails sections. It's a damn shame we'll never get another decent installation in the series.
That’s awesome!! I never played the multiplayer, but it looks super fun. I think Assault is a great game that introduced some interesting new gameplay. My only complaint was that the on-foot sections seemed to go on a bit too long at times.
@ChrisB Crisps Assault's gameplay was most similar to Halo. Which is probably why I love Halo so much after I discovered it. In another analysis essay on Star Fox Assault from a CZcamsr which I forgot their name. The game was actually gonna have a total of 16 player matches via a Local Area Network. Too bad that never came to fruition.
@ChrisB Crisps I agree, the on foot sections were a bit annoying, especially when paired with their terrible on-foot controller configurations and the odd button layout and ergonomics of the GameCube controller.
Oh wow, that’s really interesting! I believe Mario Kart Double Dash had a similar plan as well if I remember correctly.
@@RewindArcade That's interesting. There seems to be a common trend of GameCube games almost utilizing LAN functionality but scrapping it last minute.
I was in the first contest for star fox when it launched in Canada. I can still remember walking into my local K-Mart for game day. For a kid it was a very important moment in my life. I didn't do very well as the contest was the first time I was able to play the game but I was impressed and fell in love at first flight. Well done with this amazing retrospective/ Watching this brings back great memories, thanks for this.

To this day, I still can't believe that Starfox 2 actually got an official release. I think it's one of the best retro gaming surprises in history.
Definitely something unprecedented in the world of gaming. It was such an awesome surprise when it got announced, even if the ROM had been floating around for years.
@@RewindArcade If you remember, the rom that had been floating around was a late beta. The finished rom had never been leaked.

It's a miracle that Star Fox 2 came out, the person in charge of the SNES Classic production remembered that SF2 had a final build and asked for its inclusion, which was greenlit and so we got it
Yeah, so crazy how all of that came about! I’m still amazed that Nintendo gave them permission to utilize the ROM.
Actually, the story goes they were using the ROM to test the SNES Classic's SuperFX2 chip recreation, (the chip required for not only the StarFox games, but Yoshi's Island too) and they decided to include it too as a bonus.
The ROM of it had been leaked a while back and was running on emulators so the cat was well out of the bag and Nintendo had nothing to lose but still money to gain. I am glad they made the decision too: playing it on the SNES mini with the proper gamepad controller just feels more RIGHT then with an Xbox360 controller on a PC.

During the N64 era, I was more of a RAREWARE fan than a StarFox fan.
So I really enjoyed StarFox Adventures despite the fact it was never originally a StarFox Game to begin with.
Love Krystal especially in her StarFox Adventures design.
Yeah I liked it too but I had a handmedown tv with no brightness setting and that game got too dark to play lol I barely fumbled my way through KH1's dark areas on that thing back as a kid and didnt have patience for another game like that
I wish Starfox Zero didn’t reboot the series yet again, this is my first time hearing the entire history of the series but it’s so cool knowing that there was continuity from Starfox 64-Starfox Command, I definitely want to give the entire series a try as I’ve only played and completed Starfox 64
Yeah, it seemed like a strange decision to reboot the series yet again, but Command’s multiple endings definitely put the canon in a strange place.
It’s yet another result of Miyamoto’s constant meddling.
Sometimes that works out really well, sure. Like with Metroid Prime and Starfox 64. Other times result in Starfox’s reboot loops and no F-Zero for decades because nobody can figure out how to innovate a game where you drive the cars with your nose or something.
Apparently Nintendo wants to keep Star Fox indefinitely in this loop, retelling the Lylat Wars over and over again. Even Starlink has tie-ins to this arc, despite being an entirely different game.
@@zephyr8072 It's because SF and FZ are based on arcade games, because arcade games are short its hard to evolve them.

I actually think Star Fox Assault is the 2nd best entry in the series behind SF64. Not sure why people complained about that game so much? I had no problem with the on-foot levels in the game.
@@TheDr502they hate it because there was no branching paths, not enough on rail sections, and having on foot levels at all. All of which is pretty dumb

honestly if u ask me the reason for the issues with star fox are its fans, assault got panned for not being like 64 (despite it being a great game), command was just bad anyways, so for zero its clear they wanted to recapture the 64 feeling again since assault didnt do well, they did and once again got shit cause its too much like it and "cOntrOls bAd". ik not all star fox fans are bad but man they need to stop circle jerking 64 so much and accept experimentation cause assault and zero are fantastic

Thats the problem. Nintendo apparently couldn't care less about Star Fox as of today. Since they still fail to move on from the Lylat Wars arc for some weird reason, they sort of left the Arwings in suspended animation.

I feel like Nintendo has done everything in their power to try and erase the Wii U by bringing almost every successful title over to the Switch. Something that seemed very “un-Nintendo-like” for the company, though the games all sold pretty poorly so I get why it was done.

Completely agree, man. I still love playing the original game even now.
I imagined recently that the starfox universe could have some form of a pilots' academy/high school setting. The idea, various students with varying personalities, skills, commitments, loyaties, and you take on the role of a student who gets into various troubles, makes friends out of enemies, and gets helped by engineers and historians, who ends up in a old and busted arwing during a training exercise that goes awry and where people learn of your piloting skill firsthand, which eventually leads to you saving the school, and a further threat at a later date perhaps to save a nearby city, then after a period of reflection, getting to know the other students better and everyone coming together to help each other out, save the planet and go on to team up together with other people to save the entire lylat system. y'know, kind of like a cross between a persona game, one of those final fantasy games, a fire emblem game or two, starfox, air combat/ace combat series and things like valkeyria chronicles or metal gear 5/peacewalker where you build up your team and base.
the idea comes from the fact that you could have all sorts of eccentrics, normals, and people with different skill sets and disciplines, all coming together at an academy in an effort to better themselves for their own goals, to fulfill their own desires. and these people could have split loyaties, have vested interests in others doing well for their own benefit or for the benefit of an entire country/village... y'know, just a large gathering of people. and in any large gathering of people you can have all sorts of concepts running around.
and you can just imagine the characters already without me saying them, there would that typical overbearing rules-adbiding competent upper-classmen, who has the defining character trait of being an unexceptional pilot, attending a school for piloting...there would be the mechanics obsessed loner type who sticks to their own, and holes up in the garage/hanger where they work on the vehicles...you just know that there is going to be that one kid who's in over his head and needs help...and some dude who has a duty and a responsibility to make sure his family is recognized and he saves face, but gets into trouble because he believes himself to be 'more important' than everyone else.
on top of all of these ideas you could have a central theme surrounding the academy of people being free to fly the way they want, as oppose to doing things in the correct way, the same way as everyone else does them, which goes on to create a more unpredictable dogfighter on an aerial battelfield. no flying in formation for these students!

Jesus man.. Star Fox is a cool game I used to play it when I was 10 years old in 2011 on the GameCube I ain't gonna lie it's pretty nostalgic.

i can't think of another series where one entry stands so far above the rest (star fox 64 of course), its easily in the top 5 games on the n64 and one of the best shoot em ups of all time
I definitely agree that Star Fox 64 is the golden child in terms of pure gameplay, but I also love the RTS-like strategy elements found in Star Fox 2 and Command. I really wish we could have gotten a game that mixed SF2’s strategic mechanics with 64’s insanely good gameplay.

Star Fox is one of my most beloved franchise and Fox one of my biggest childhood heros. I got really sad and emotional, remebering what happend to the frsnchise. There is so much potential if they would just give StarFox the BotW treatment, overholing the formula instead of just abusing it for some gimmiky Miyamoto ideas..
I will always have hope to something new in the next Direct, even if it never happens.

star fox was always replied on gimmicks. and to me i always liked that
1 and 2 with the super fx chip, 64 with the analog stick, assault with the duelstick, and zero with the game pad. all of which i think really worked out, especially zero, such a good game

My first Star Fox game was Star Fox 64, and it's what got me into the series, especially with the characters who we'd be flying with, and the story. It was a really fun game to play back then, and is still fun to revisit nowadays. I hope the series gets a new game in the future, or maybe a movie. I'd love to see Myu and Fay be reintroduced into the series.

A big part of the reason why the first game did so well was because the soundtrack and sound effect design were epic and engrossing. The game's soundtrack would switch between pop music and orchestral perfectly to fit the theme of whatever stage you were playing.

Entering its crushing 30s, it's amazing that there is still a following for this after years of reboots and mismanagements.
It definitely has a very passionate fan base despite so many missteps. Really curious to see if Nintendo does anything for the series’ 30th anniversary or if Zero damaged its reputation too bad that they want to let it rest longer.
@@RewindArcade I'm not 100% confident that they'll do anything about. Regardless of fans, Star Fox was just never that popular to, specifically the Japanese market, since sales for the game after Star Fox 64 was abysmal. I do think that Zero has irreversibly damage the franchise too much that now, Fox, Falco, and Wolf are just only recognized as characters from the Smash series than their own game.
I don't think the series even has that many reboots compared to other series. JRPGs practically reboot every single game with new characters/settings/ect.

Great video, my only criticism is the lack of SF64 3D & Guard in the intro. (Also, that WiiU robot game wasn't scrapped, it was retooled into a Nintendo Switch LABO game.)
Despite it's ups and downs, I always loved the StarFox series. Those polygon graphics, cheesy overdramatic voices, and weirdly cute yet tough animals never get old for me.
Not only was the N64 & SNES games a big part of my childhood, but it's early N64 game and fansites helped me interact with many friends, and family IRL, or online.
I have my StarLink Arwing, and Fox McCloud Amiibo displayed proudly on my shelf. While I enjoyed Zero despite it's flaws, and StarLink, I hope a new StarFox comes out, or even just an improved version of Zero/Guard comes out for Switch.
That nod to Iwata during the end credits of Zero still brings a tear to my eye...
Truly an underrated series, and I hope it comes back again in some form. (Game or movie maybe?)

What I got from viewing this is how far Nintendo got away from the simple rail shooter with primitive 3D action (but amazing for it's time) to a massive virtual worlds extravaganza with cute, hairy characters. They really just kept the name of the franchise.

Unpopular pick but Starfox Adventures will always be my favorite game ever and therefore my favorite Starfox game. I wish I never got rid of my gamecube
The story behind Adventures never stops being painful. I bet if both Dinosaur Planet and Imamura's original Star Fox sequel came out separately without merging they would have been much better games on their own, at least the former one for sure. I still loved SFA, it was *the* game that made me get GameCube, but playing it now always makes me question what could have been.
And then there's the absurd cancellation of the fully completed SF2, ultimately its sacrifice was in vain thanks to all the delays of N64's launch. Even with the silver lining of this game eventually getting an official release on SNES Classic it's still so frustrating that we were robbed of this masterpiece at a time when visuals like these could actually blow you away. Releasing it decades later in an era where 3D gaming has already peaked is just not the same. Honestly, this whole franchise has suffered so badly due to mismanagement, it really deserved better.
Yeah, Star Fox has had such a strange and bumpy history, probably more so than almost any other series out there. I agree with you that I’d have loved to see Dinosaur Planet and Imamura’s N64 Star Fox game release separately myself. Especially because DP was so far into production already.
And yeah, Star Fox 2 really did deserve better. It’s one of my favorite games in the series and really had a lot of awesome ideas and game mechanics that would have been incredibly innovative back in 1995.
i sure hope nintendo makes a new star fox game thats not a remake of star fox 64. nintendo could work with alot of ideas like a star fox prequel where james is the protagonist.

Star Fox assault was so ahead of its time! I used to play that game with my brother and friends all the time!! Until this video I totally forgot all about it. They really dropped the ball on that one. It had so much potential and could have made it even so much better with bigger maps and refining the controls. But then just disappeared.
The fact you could fly the arwing and wolfens or get in the tank or run on foot and use grenades, sniper rifles, machine guns etc. There was nothing out at the time that allowed you to really do all of that in 1 multi player game. It was so fun! Man I miss that game

Since you did mention fangames, an absolutely incredible one you might want to check out is Star Fox: Event Horizon. It even has the original actress for Krystal and is just amazing work for a fangame in general.

This was very fun to watch and seeing how Starfox came be with young teenage prodigies who where great at technology and coding and Miyamoto walking through shrines. My favorite games are Adventures for trying something new otherwise the series might have gotten stagnated and feeling 2D Dimensional, and Starfox 2 for the Free Roaming, Strategy and Puzzle Elements. The Microsoft acquisition still breaks my heart because with how great Rare did on the N64 imagine the Rare Support on GameCube (The cancelled Donkey Kong Racing), Wii, Wii U and Switch? Perhaps in alternate timeline.

The Warp Stone in StarFox Adventures only warped Fox to 2 different areas.
A Snow Mountain Pass where he would meet Tricky, and Kazoa Palace when Fox obtained a Kazoa spirit and he needed to return it to the Sazoa Shrines.

I still remember the smile on my face and the excitement I felt when my sister got me a used Star Fox Adventures for my sixteenth birthday. I didn't care that it was used, I was just happy to have a game from the franchise so I would know what it was really like. The next year I got Assault, and I was even happier, even though it was just the disc. Many hours of good memories with those games. I've been in love with the franchise since the summer of 2018, I don't remember exactly why but I think it had something to do with Smash Bros. I really hope at some point Nintendo sheds some light on the franchise sooner or later, and it would be amazing if they kept the story going with some cool twists and concepts that everybody will enjoy. There will never be a day where I don't think what's next for Star Fox.

2001 E3, StarFox Adventures was already on the Nintendo Gamecube development and it was titled as StarFox Adventures Dinosaur Planet.
The Dinosaur Planet line in the title was dropped sometime in early to mid 2002 from my memory in regards to reading the old Nintendo Gamer Mags I remember reading at the time.
Dinosaur Planet is the games name when it was still intended to be an N64 game and had absolutely zero to do with Starfox. Nintendo liked it that much they wanted it into the Starfox series. The 64 prototype has been released
