    Always a delight to listen to you talking about video games. It feels poetic, comforting, positive... like a good book.

    I was typing timestamps for the video when the description suddenly got updated. Thanks for doing so! I'll continue the video now :)

    Ah, the Blood Starved Beast. It's the way you see it slowly thudding towards you for the first time after that screeching violin music kicks in. And then it smacks you to the floor and spews poison all over your face... I'll never forget that.

  • @w00twood
    @w00twood Před 6 měsíci +6

    I loved this. You're very verbally fluent, and I was thinking this when you suddenly said about halfway through that you're 'not being articulate enough'... a 2 hour video with basically no filler words and loads of exposition speaks against that!
    Nice touch piping in the York theme tune just as you were giving hints that Deadly Premonition was coming next. That was good editing.
    P.S. have you ever been to Snoqualmie Falls or any other Twin Peaks filming location?

      I had the same thought. I like to think I'm pretty smart, but I've been doing a lot of job interviews lately which has emphasized how horrible my verbal abilities are. It seems like he isn't referencing a script or anything and I don't know how someone can be this fluent or even think of so many things to talk about.

      @@gdtyra I suppose Michael having done YT for years means he's quite comfortable speaking on camera, at length. A very different situation than a job interview! Good luck with those by the way, most people hem and haw a bit so don't worry too much.

    I usually just put on headphones listen to Diablo music, walk rapidly around town with a straight back and whack garbage cans with a stick. Sometimes they explode, unfortunately.

    One quick correction: Fall-from Grace is Lawful Neutral, not Lawful Good in Planescape Torment. Succubi are normaly Neutral Evil. That's another game I have from when I was younger on CD. :)

    Diablo 1 was my favorite of the series too, I liked how you got three basic classes that you could customize in many different ways. If you wanted to make a wizard that uses a battleaxe you totally could, but the sequels all have class restricted items that drop at random so there's a chance of getting more clutter than anything you'd want. I loved Planescape Torment as well, matter of fact Planescape is how I found your channel, I searched for it on youtube one day and found your series about the setting. Have you ever thought about redoing those? They're great but the audio is...well you know. Also I'd recommend checking out the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games particularly Shadows of Chernobyl, it has this inventory focus that really makes you second guess helping out the npcs, while they can help you later, it will also wear your equipment down. So you actually have to decide carefully if it's worth going for.

    I've literally just finished playing VTM: Bloodlines again, just closed it down before seeing this video was here. I never get tired of that one. My other favourites that I've been playing recently are "Rebel Galaxy" and "StarCrawlers", both of which are really good indie titles. They're both really cheap in a GOG sale at the moment if you don't have those yet.

  • @PalaceMidasTV

    My own list would definitely be coloured by games with great music and atmosphere. Sometimes I even like mediocre games with good atmosphere, like Blood Omen 2, and I can see exactly why you love Deadly Premonition. The developer of that game in his design philosophy has characters eat cereal or drink coffee thinking the player will think of their game next time they have coffee. It's so great. Lot of the titles you chose are brilliant.

  • @cord113

    One of my all time favourites that will always be at the top of my list is "Vagrant Story" on the PS1. Another, that is also a PS1 title, is "Koudelka". If you don't know those 2 you should check them out.

    • @michaelsnow1
      @michaelsnow1  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I played Vagrant Story back in the day and never beat it. But earlier this year I decided to try it again and finally beat the final boss. (Admittedly I used save-states sometimes though)

      That scene near the end when Ashley meets his family still makes me cry every time. They got the music for that scene absolutly perfect. Also, the amount to do in new game plus with all the extra areas and dungeons you can unlock is amazing. @@michaelsnow1

      @cord113 Před 6 měsíci +1

      That was a good thing in Vagrant Story. Cripple the head to stop mage casting, cripple the legs to stop faster enemies fleeing to heal, etc. I also liked the way that if you were good enough with your timing you could take out even a boss in a single chain, miss and the Risk system meant you were screwed when they hit back. @@michaelsnow1

    Do you know the one thing that spoiled it for me with Doom 2016? Near the end game everything in me told me things were building up for a modern version of the original level 1 Doom soundtrack to kick in. I felt so disappointed when it didn't.

    That's quite a variety...
    lot of them matching mine - some are still playeble even years later. That's impressive. I only wish that I've bought Warcraft3 instead of Diablo2 when I had that chance...

    I tip my hat to the lack of romance RPGs. I'd rather go on a grand adventure like Wizardry 7 than play a BioWare dating simulator like Dragon Age any day of the week.
    A lot of your top 30 games would be on or near my top 30. I would include Fallout 1, Deus Ex, Thief 1 and 2, The Dark Heart of Uukrul (an incredible and highly underrated late 80s dungeon crawler), and Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar (a Wizardry 7 spiritual successor released in 2017).

    • @BriteRory
      @BriteRory Před 6 měsíci +1

      Dark Heart of Uukrul is a seriously awesome game. As is Grimoire!

    I could listen to you talk about games all day, this kind of video is just perfect for me, thank you sincerely for taking the time to share your thoughts like this.
    Edit - For my own list, I would include Dark Souls, Morrowind, Daggerfall, Wizardry 7, Fallout, Baldur's Gate 2, Tactics Ogre, Fallout New Vegas, Shin Megami Tensei, Might and Magic World of Xeen, Actraiser, Ultima Underworld, Darklands, Arcanum, Castlevania SotN, Art of Fighting, Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl, Red Dead Redemption 2, Ico, Final Fantasy 6, X-Com, Majora's Mask, Metal Gear Solid 5, Xenogears, Shining in the Darkness, The King of Fighters '98, and Lunar Silver Star Story (both the Sega CD original and the PlayStation or Saturn versions). These are games I've replayed at least twice, some of them multiple times, or for games like Morrowind, New Vegas and Stalker are basically an ongoing lifestyle due to modding. Games I haven't played in a very long time but would very much like to, and would possibly include in my all-time best-ever favorites category would include Suikoden, Phantasy Star 4, Star Ocean, and Metal Max 2. I'm also very fond of Mount & Blade, Persona 3, Planescape Torment, and SaGa Frontier.

    • @taz0k2
      @taz0k2 Před 6 měsíci

      I like the atmosphere in Fallout and the combat. It has great world building. The story though, to me, is pretty underwhelming: A mutant merged with a computer system aims to eradicate all unperfect life and replace it with "perfect" super mutants. The super mutants though are presented as being dumb orc-like creatures throughout the game, they don't seem particularily perfect. If you inform The Master that super mutants are all sterile then The Master realizes his plan sucks and he commits suicide, The End. So not the best story.
      The writing approaches Planescape: Torment levels in a few places though such as the "Corridor of Revulsion".

  • @mrp8171
    @mrp8171 Před 6 měsíci +1

    My major beef with mm8 is that game was to much dumb down compared to 6 and 7. Yeah, we have more races, but they combine race with classes (so you cant have dark elf knight, you only have dark elf, with was just a reskin of archer from 6 and 7 with added merchant skill), less class progression (from two in 6, branching in 7to just one in 8), less quest (with collecting ingrediens for potion counting as quest), less outdoor maps and dungeon was way smaller. You can plow through game very quick, even if you was not experienced with other installments. But it was all 3DO fault, they give developers only 9 month to make game.
    Also, time stamp for Planescape Torment is broken.

    So if you love all these Souls games and still haven't played the (imo) best of them all, Elden Ring, oh are you in for it.
    That game has not only scope, but depth. In all dimensions. It's not hard, just use magic, but experience it in entirety to actually get why it is great. Also the best overworld music and ambience in all of gaming.
    Also Deadly Premonition 2 ? Such an ending.

    I sent you a pic if you're interested. If you like Dark Souls you should take a look at the board games. I picked up the base game with 3 of it's expansion packs a while back when one of our local game stores was closing down. The models alone were worth what I paid for them.
