  • My son and I take a 7.5 mile hike into the Pecos Wilderness in early June to Serpent Lake. We find incredible beauty, snow drifts, and mosquitos.

Thanks for another great preview of the Carson National Forest. We plan on heading up next week. It should be interesting to see what the fire did. I have read that the wildflowers are exploding right now. Cheers

I hiked this back in 2019 and enjoyed it. I feel like backpackers should be aware of the hunting seasons before they go. I hiked up the day before big horn sheep season and shared the trail/lake area with a lot of hunters on horseback. I did not attempt to summit the peak. If you see a lot of horse trailers at the trailhead you’ll know.

Great video! We are backpacking up to Serpent Lake on Saturday for a single nighter and wondering about the water sources. Since you said you ran out, are you saying there are no water sources past those first 2 water crossings? We're taking the dog on his first backpacking adventure so very excited! Thanks for your help.

That is correct, except for a small stream that you'll cross just before the lake. It's really not that far from the trailhead, just kinda steep. Personally, I had just made an error in judgement not to fill up at the lake when we were there.

Nice video! I'm going in a few days. You said you ran out of water. Is the lake not safe to filter from?

Beautiful! Didn't see the fishing rod this episode. Any fish in the lake?

The lake is super shallow, and I didn't see any signs of fish. Sorry.
