  • 4th week of training. Weather was unusually warm, but her response was good. I was pleased with her first free flight and now she needs anti carrying training A falconry license is required for these activities.

    I saw my first kestrel today out my window at work in Newark NJ. We have a beautiful rooftop garden that is surrounded by a glass fence that actually killed a red tail hawk until the covered the glass with little dots so they can see the fence. Anyhow it was nice seeing another raptor in the garden without it flying into the fence. Love how that tail goes up and down. They are so small that it's hard to tell if they are a raptor but I could tell based on its behavior too. It stays in one place for a few minutes before moving onto another perch. The local birds behave differently too.

    I am really enjoying this little bird. She has learned to fly through the house turn the corner and fly down the hall for a tidbit. Fun!

    Had my first encounter with an American Kesrel. Must have been stunned by a car, as he was in the middle of the street. He's in good hands with experienced birders and recuperating safely. Such a beautiful bird to watch up close.

    They are one of the most beautiful falcons . I recently released this Kestrel, but she was a joy to fly while I had her.

    This was my 1st Kestrel. She was trapped around 152 g. She flew well between 105-112 g. I just released her Sunday. I have several videos of the training and release on my channel. I enjoyed flying her to the lure the most. Thanks for the comment.

    Don't give up. One of the requirements to become a falconer is to take the falconry exam. The Georgia website probably has suggested reading materials. If your serious then prepare and take the exam. A falconer maybe more willing to take you on once you have passed the exam. Good luck!

    A 1:23 I think, if you listen closely you can hear a red-shouldered hawk. xD A pair lives nearby and hopefully they're mates, because I want some baby hawks! :D Noel is doing a good job so far.

    This afternoon the Kestrel ate half of a mouse! He's not moving too much; probably getting used to his cage and surroundings. I hope his head wasn't too badly hurt as he was bleeding slightly from the side of his head.

    They are very common in North America. I believe some migrate in the northern parts but not much in the south where I live. I wouldn't be surprised if they were in Cuba too.

    Tail bobbing is a characteristic of this species. Not sure why.

  • @falconfather69
    @falconfather69  Před 11 lety

    No. Falconers usually hunt English Sparrows or Starlings as these birds are not protected species and are considered pests in many places.

  • @falconfather69
    @falconfather69  Před 11 lety +1

    Many parks are in bird sanctuary. Falconers also have to use discretion when hunting around other people as some may be offended by the sport. I would not hunt in a public park.

    Almost all Kestrels I have seen used in falconry are female does the gender of the bird effect how easy it is to train? or are males just not as common?

    • @falconfather69
      @falconfather69  Před 7 lety +1

      This was the only kestrel I have trained. Females are larger so they can handle larger prey. I'm not aware of differences in trainability.

    I’m doing falconry when I move to my new house I’m 24 I’m going to work wit vine of these guys is it true you don’t need telemetry because they don’t fly away if they miss the bird they usually land nearby

    • @falconfather69
      @falconfather69  Před 5 lety +1

      That's true, but other things may happen. They could be chased away by a larger raptor such as a cooper's hawk. I would use telemetry if possible.
