Funny thing is that ash did it once only to fail. Apparently you have to beat it to make it realise you are worthy or you could take the care approach where it would volunteer to join you the last one being rare. The stronger the pokemon the harder it is.
not impossible, the chances are just extremely low, I believe it was less then 1% unless it has a status effect and its health is in the red 🤔 I normally just buy 100 pokeballs and keep trying till I get it 😂 takes a while but very satisfying to see a legendary in a regular pokemon instead of a ultra, timer, or dusk ball lol
In emerald I accidentally miss clicked and threw a normal ball at Rayquaza at the very beginning of the encounter. To my surprise, it actually caught it. No debuffs, hp loss, just an untouched Rayquaza instant capture.

You know what's even better I always thought that if somebody did do that like Ash did to any types of Pokemon to prevent them from escaping their captured by Pokeball is the instantly grab the ball and hold it until you hear the sweet captured sound that is definitely the smartest thing any Pokemon trainer should have been doing

I remember catching a kyogre in a regular pokeball once. I forget which game it was, but I remember running out of all the better pokeballs I had, so I just threw the regular one on the outside chance it would work. And it did.
I always wondered if you were in a real Pokémon game why don’t you just do that hold it shut so they can’t get out. They automatically become your Pokémon if they can’t get out.
And in actuality, they’ve tried this in the anime. Ever wonder why a pokeball that fails to catch its target cannot be reused? They explode when the Pokémon breaks out.

So is that means the difference between PokeBall and ultraball is just ultraball is a bit harder to open
Try it with a caterpie first. You might not have the muscle mass for a Groudon.
