Happy belated pride to all where ever you may land in this ever expanding acronym!
@@-Poka- that’s not a name or acronym, he’s _name_ explain.
Just call them *gay*
@@NotFckingBen Oh sorry I swear I only was curious about that
@@-Poka- no need to apologize, you didn’t do anything wrong lol
Let's just call them; Sexual & Gender Minorities (S&GM).
I'm bisexual and IDK why non-heterosexual & transgender are grouped together when sexualities and gender identities are they are two different things.
Fun fact: in finnish, there is a whole proper word for LGBTQIA+ people: sateenkaari-ihminen. It literally means "rainbow human".
Reason no. 38583 to love Finland: they have a very sweet terminology for a group often referred to by a lot of letters.
That's much nicer than a group of letters lmao. Nice one, finland
"Human"
This is wholesome.
@@andrejt8160 yes. We are humans
The most concise one I've seen suggested is "GSM", "Gender/Sexual Minority", which covers all the bases without becoming a paragraph long.
Also, I think the reason the "G" was originally in front is because lesbians were historically less subject to legal discrimination (social discrimination is another matter though), particularly in the English-speaking world where lesbianism was never formally prohibited.
Or, how about just "L+"? It's brief, and everyone can then mentally insert the extra letters.
@@leisti why not just queer only 1 syllable or if people don’t like the word queer just +
@@tenacious3911 There is a reason why we traditionally have been less opposed to female homosexuality...
I like that one, and there's the variant GRSM, "Gender, Romantic, and Sexual Minorities"
I feel that the more you add, the less inclusive it becomes- you're setting a precedent for including *everything* in the acronym, to the point where even smaller groups now seem left out.
this is a valid point- especially with the progress flag. i get it tried to be good, and it tried to be more inclusive, but the rainbow flag already represented all lgbt, and adding more stuff makes it feel like it actually is not completely inclusive.
@@just_a_feesh that's how I felt. Adding stripes for, say, african americans, which isn't even an LGBTQ+ thing, also doesn't help- now *everything*, even things that aren't related to gender or sexuality, *can* be included, and thus everything not in the flag is now left out.
This. Also, another problem with left-leaning communities is the hyperfocusing on different increasingly more granular labels, instead of strategically working towards goals that will make *all* queer lives better.
@@just_a_feesh Plus, from a design standpoint, it doesn't look good when hung vertically or at an angle because then the arrow shape points *down*. You almost have to hang it from the fly end.
What about W for White people looking for a way to be considered an oppressed group?
I am not a part of the LGBTQ+ community, but i still fully support it. However, i've always found it silly how more letters get added, simply because the "+" is supposed to mean "all others". adding more letters just makes the name more and more irksome to say.
Yeah, that’s why it’s only used on the internet lol
Because of that I started only using queer. I want to include everyone.
Using the "+" is still quite silly imo. Are the 'LGBT' people more important than the other identities? 'LGBTQ'? 'LGBTQIA'?? Why can't it be 'LGB+' then (heck, it could even be 'L+')?
I really liked the MOGII solution (and 'moh-gee' sounds cute...)
(btw I'm not part of the community and do not intend to offend anyone)
@@nathanalexandre137 I feel exactly the same (and I am part of the in-group haha). For some time I called it only +Community and then Q+Community. But thanks to some ~Anon, that was kinda stained.
Now I only say queer and I know it was a slur and I know that some people really don’t like the word. But I lack the idea and influence to coin something else.
Some say that the acronym exists because some subgroups need more attention. I could be on board with that. But then we should remove those letters who are less severely in danger :)
I'm a few of those letters and I agree with you!
In New Zealand we seem to be drifting towards the term "Rainbow Communities", unless we need to refer to a specific group.

I thought that was just Auckland pride?? Do other regions do it too?
@@yourejustwrong124 I've noticed it with various political parties etc. and in the media.
I've also seen GLITFAB used here in Palmy (for international audiences - the F in this acronym stands for 'Faʻafafine') bit I don't think that's really taken off elsewhere!
In America there's "Alphabet Squad" but it's uh, derogatory.

Queer used to be an insult in English not a long time ago, and apparently some people still don't like it, so I don't think it's entirely inclusive.
It's long since been reclaimed by Millennials and Gen Z.
Queer is open ended and never has to be updated. As long there is sexual normative, there will be the sexual. We are the weird ones, the ones that don't quite fit in.
@@noejaun2540 yeah but what about the gen x and boomers who haven’t reclaimed it? Fuck them, right? Anybody who wants to claim it for themselves has every right, and personally i’m not offended by it; but those people who are are perfectly entitled to be. Especially those who lived through the times when it was used as a slur. Not a good overall inclusive label imo as long as there are still people who reject being described in that term.
‘Gay’ and ‘lesbian’ were and still are used as insults as well so this isn’t a great argument
Doesn't "queer" mean every sexuality but heterosexuality? If it is so, why just adding the letter Q. You could use queer as an umbrella term.
Many LGBTQ+ people don’t identify with the term queer because it was once used as a slur
It’s added for historical reasons, since it was not in the original acronym.
And yes, you can describe the group simply as queer, but it’s unrelated to the acronym itself.
"Queer" is so much better than the ever growing initialism.
The word queer is controversial in some circles, for one personal reason and one ideological reason. The personal reason is that queer has historically been a slur and still is in some places, so some people may not feel comfortable describing themselves as queer. The ideological reason comes from people with reactionary views who don't want anybody to use queer for any reason because it's perceived to be "too inclusive" of the likes of trans people and bi/pan people. These are people who believe the community should only be open for cisgender lesbians, or if they're having a good day, cisgender gay men and bi people.
Personally I use queer more than I do the acronym, but I won't use it in reference to people who are uncomfortable with it for the aforementioned personal reason
Not everyone identifies as queer though. I’m bi and trans, but I don’t use the word queer.
The 2nd A in the longer one and the second meaning of it in the shorter revision does not mean Ally; it means Aromantic. Allies, while important to the movement, are not part of the queer community. Just like allies to the BLM movement are not black or allies of other marginalized groups are not part of those marginalized groups. The A in LGBTQAI+ means Asexual and Aromantic, not allies.
Other than that great video! : D
Edit: Thank you comments for reminding me A also stands for Agender.
Tbf, there is disagreement on this. I’ve seen lots of people within the community say it stands for ally. But I agree it shouldn’t lol
Don't forget agender. Even before I found out that I was asexual, I never believed in the A standing for ally
It can stand for agender too. But yeah I agree, it definitely doesn't stand for ally. People use the argument of "the A stands for ally, not asexual" to try to erase asexuality as though it "isn't normal" and "can be fixed", even within the LGBTQIA+ community itself, which is very harmful towards our community
@@the42oflife oh yes! sorry I forgot about Agender.
@@6.tatertots yes, sorry I forgot about Agender. I agree. I am an ace person and really hate that we are forgotten and/or thought to be broken.
There are some people I have heard use a different acronym:
G: Gender
R: Romantic
S: Sexual
M: Minorities
Which I find to be decently accurate and seems to include a lot.
It actually stands for Gender, Romantic, and Sexual minorities, since romance and sexuality are two different things.
@@asterobiology my mistake, but thank you for the correction. Will correct my mistake, but leave this comment as a reminder that we all have things to learn .
@@asterobiologywhat about intersex people? Would that be under “sexual” because it’s a biological sex condition or gender because intersex people choose how they identify themselves in society for having aspects of “both sexes”.
Basically no one in the actual community includes allies in the acronym
Exactly, A is for asexual, aromantic, agender, etc
I prefer calling them People Of The Alternative Taste Organization (POTATO).
ah yes calling people potatoes totally isn't going to be considered offensive
One of the tough things about this is that it is hard to determine who says what the "official version" is. Like who gets to be the one who makes the call?

Ally here. I remember when it was just LGBT, but today I just use LGBT (spoken) or LGBTQ+ (written) even if the other letter aren't there, they are still implied if you at least have LGBT. Also LGB is associated with transphobia when used in present day.
Also want to say none of the "A" should stand for ally whether or not they actually do, which I'm pretty sure they don't.
the A stands for asexual no?
@@imnotnotgameiacmaniac5327 yes, but a couple times I've heard extended forms with multiple "A"s say Ally is one of them.
The other meaning of A isn’t ally, it’s aromantic
some people do use it to mean ally
Subjective
A lot of the time people do one A for ally and one for asexual&aromantic. It makes some sense, since those two groups overlap quite a bit, but yeah, it is different. Also, there’s a movement by some to deny both of those groups as a part of the community, which is why you’ll hear a lot of people, even members of the community, say that there’s only one A and that it stands for ally. It’s complicated, is what I’m saying.
I prefer "aromatic".
True. The only ppl who say its for ally want to exclude aspecs from the community
I guess it's because I was a teenager in the 90s that LGBT with a + feels combined natural and inclusive, especially since the initialism is always being added to and varieties of combinations get used, though I don't feel entirely justified in dropping the commonly expected Q and have included QA+ in circumstances where that is being used.
Even before you introduced the origin of the word Gay I was imagining what other standards could satisfy and simply Gay+ was one that came to mind, but of course it probably wouldn't be acceptable due to most common usage and erasure reasons. It would just be nice to have an agreed upon fixed term that is wholly inclusive without requiring additions. Then again the increase in letters is great to highlight to the world at large new identities that have been observed to require better equal rights and treatment.

Not to be rude, but I do feel Transvestite, Straight Allies, Polyamorous, HIV infected feels less of a 'sexuality' and more of an excuse to be inclusive (or an excuse to make the name longer ).
Cross-dressers, straights (why are they here), polygamy (might be willing to concede on this) and medically ill people don't really count as sexualities, romantic attractions or gender identities; and I feel it might water down the meaning of the original, the same way the Internet has turned Nazi into just another insult.
That said, what matters more is we learn to treat others the way we want them to treat us, and respect their freedom as individuals.
Most people agree that those shouldn't be in this.
Another initialism I've seen used is GSRD: gender, sexual, and relationship diverse.
One I’ve seen is GSM (Gender/Sexual Minorities).
These are both quite nice, and neater.
@@tomney4460 I use GRSM - Gender, relationship, and sexual minority
That's got to be the best acronym I've heard so far! GSRM and MOGII are both problematic because they describe this spectrum of identities as 'marginalized' or 'minoritiy'. While it's true that we have been historically (and in some regions of the world, currently) a marginalized group, one of our main goals is to not be marginalized anymore. So an acronym that doesn't include 'marginalized' or 'minority' is better in my opinion, because it's more future-proof and doesn't "other" us from the rest of society.
The unrealised ultimate path of intersectionality is that you will eventually realise the conclusion of individualism. The individual is the ultimate minority.
Ur a hero I couldn’t have worded it better
@@junoo7761 thanks. I did plagiarised it. All the best.
There is no smaller minority than the individual.
Perfectly stated.
Intersectionality isn't about minorities, it's about emancipation of different groups.
Billionaires are a minority and they have no need for emancipation based on their fortune. The working class (which includes most of the middle class) is the vast majority of the country and they're part of the intersectional struggle.
I love the quality of your videos and how thorough they are, Great stuff. Have a nice weekend.

When they will C++ to LGBTQ acronym?
@@NotFckingBen woah tf

It wouldn't be that weird to be honest, considering how many trans women are computer programmers ;)
lgbtq+ is probably the most inclusive but i thibk at this point ppl will just use LGBT. it's become a word in its own right, not just an acronym. Don't direct annoyance towards these acronyms to the lgbt community, we don't make them and agree they're hard to say. Even if you're doiing it as a joke, making judgements against a group as a whole is the definition of prejudice.
I've been using 'LGBT+' for many years, and never heard any complaints about it. Any more than four letters and one symbol is too much to pronounce or remember...
How is this word pronounced?
The more letters they add the nore groups that feel excluded.
Yeah, it feels that way.
I wish everyone could just be cool with "queer". It's a shame it's still considered a slur in some places. It's such a nice umbrella all gender and sexual minorities can fit under without a big unwieldy initialism
Tbh even if it weren’t a slur, there are always going to be people that prefer a different term.
@@alexreid1173 Our diversity is both a blessing and a curse!
GSM literally means gender and sexual minorities, and absolutely no one would complain.
Heh, I remember when society lost their shit when they originally added the T. Unfortunately, back then, a lot of the backlash came from inside the Gay and Lesbian community itself.

I like the ancient Greek's attitude. Let's just call everyone Human. Protection and support for anyone's sexuality would fall under Human Rights and Humanity in general.
Yeah well Ancient Greeks still kinda owned slaves so
One way or another, if groups start being dehumanized, we do specifically need to spell out said groups as being included in "the people" lest jackasses in power state "well we don't _have_ to". Just look at how often orientation or gender isn't spelled out somewhere, and "no discrimination on basis of sex" is the best extant legal precedent without a redrafting that activist lawyers can go for, yet judges overrule them on just that point.
Should things descend yet further (and we all know they will...), the lack of protections for _specific_ groups being spelled out into the letter of the law federally can and will be exploited to overturn things for the worse.
And hopefully children would have rights to not be exploited like the Greeks did to their children.
@@DreamingDarlin Don't think nobody sees what you're doing there, fearmonger. If you hate queer people, GTFO.
They regarded you as masculine or feminine depending on who penetrated. What was acceptable depended on social status. People could do anything they wanted to slaves and lower-class people.
Saying queer people/community in place of LGBT has become a lot more popular lately and it's my personal favorite way to refer to my community. Though it may still be a little controversial, as just like the word gay was once a slur, queer was too in very recent memory and people abused with it still feel it's sting. But now that it has been mostly reclaimed/being thoroughly reclaimed and wounds are healing, I feel like in a decade or two Queer as an encompassing word could definitely overtake the LGBT acronym
Queer was actually the word used to describe our communities back in the 70s-00s most often, but a rise in exclusionists, TERFs/Radical Feminists, and other groups pushing for infighting coined it as a 'bad' word to the new generations of baby gays lacking any elders (Cause of the AIDS crisis) and it faded out of popularity for a while. It's only coming back in because there's been a very big push by queer historians and still living elders to run out infighting and clean up the mess all those groups made.
I vastly prefer using queer as an umbrella term. It's just as all-encompassing and easier to say. Unfortunately, TERFs keep trying to push this "queer is a slur" narrative to try and tear the community apart. Their argument falls apart because literally every term for queer people was once a slur, and while they can be used as insults under certain contexts, they have largely been reclaimed. "Queer" is such a historically important term to the community, it shouldn't be erased. We're here, we're queer, get used to it.
I mean, I haven't heard TERFs say that queer is a slur, however I've heard them say that TERF, cis and even bigot are slurs... I mean, TERFs are incredibly stupid, so...
I heard that there is a division forming between gay and queer.
@@greamespens1460 well, generally older LGBT+ people don't like to call themselves queer because a lot of them remember the word "queer" being used as a slur, younger LGBT+ people have fully reclaimed the term... there isn't a new divide forming between "gay and queer", like what does that even mean? Queer is just an umbrella term for most LGBTQ+ identities...
@@walterl322 I heard it referenced in Douglas Murray's new book. I have not read it so I do not know the whole context.
Bisexual was never a slur. Neither was two-spirit.

lol
Personally as someone who's been apart of the community for over a decade and fills many niches of it (Big and small), I've got to say that I'm tired of the term LGBT+. Over the past few years, as I've learned more about why it came to be and our umbrella terms that came before and after it, I've come to see it as a very watered down way to refer to our community. I personally like the words queer and MOGAI, both of which are broad and inclusive in a way LGBT and all its variations can't be in any practical sense.
Queer has a lot of historical precedent- our older generations ripped the word from bigot's mouths and reclaimed them as their own, putting their feet down and screaming that who we are IS different and DOES go against the norm and how we should be proud of that and fight for who we are! We're here, we're queer, get used to it! Not gay as in happy, queer as in f you! Queer is a word that encapsulates both the wrath and the pride of our community- the rights we've fought and died for, the rights we're still dying and fighting for! And, to anyone who says 'queer is a slur'- every single word we've come up for ourselves is used as such! Growing up, the words gay, lesbian, and trans were used as slurs, I never heard the word queer until others in the community told me about it. Also, there are words that are only contextually slurs, such as fag meaning cigarette or Jew.
MOGAI, (NOT MOGII, that's a mispelling) not on the other hand is a very new term, made up, as far as I'm aware, online by people who use micro-identites. I like it specifically because it can be open to interpretation and inclusion much like queer can as well as specifically including intersex people who have a lot of common ground with trans people in terms of struggles and rights to bodily autonomy (Though, they aren't always treated well by us :( ). A lot of people shit on the term because it was made by people who use micro labels (those who label themselves very specifically) To them I say: shut up! Everyone has the right to label themselves however they want and no one gets to have a say in it! You don't get to label anyone and no one gets to label you! That's the beauty of our community! Anyone who says otherwise is a twat and should get a sock shoved in their mouth!
Aro here! The A doesn't stand for Ally, it stands for Asexual, aromantic and agender

Here in my country, Brazil, the umbrella term started as GLS rather than LGB/ GLB, meaning "Gays, Lesbians and Sympathizers"
As for the acronym currently, it would be way better if a word (or acronym, like the told "mogii") that determines everyone was used rather than an ever-growing string of letters (last time I looked for it, it was 32 letters); that way it's easier to learn and speak and everyone would feel included.
Its meant to be an umbrella term, so continually adding to it simply invalidates its purpose.
Just add all 26 letters and be done with it.
It would be discriminatory against the other alphabets 😂
I saw Quiltbag pop-up and then sadly fade. I loved that because it contains pretty much all the letters of the acronym and it's great imagery since quilts are made from all kinds of bits and bobbles --different materials coming together to form a piece of art beautiful in both form and function.
When you attempt to be too politically correct, you become a joke and not taken seriously by everyone because no one knows what it all means.
"political correctness," the dumbest idea I've ever heard. Politics is about having and sharing actual opinions, not trying to avoid them. And besides, there are too many people in the world to try to accommodate for EVERYONE... if you think someone that doesn't use all 26 letters of the alphabet to talk about homosexuals is somehow attacking you, and you get offended by it, then maybe the actual problem is with you. Twitter.. I swear.
Look, supporting them and believing they should be treated fairly is one thing, but domination at threat of being cancelled and having your career ruined is another.
I always wonder why we don’t just call them Rainbows? 🌈 Or something like that?
When I was involved with various LGBTQ+ community, support, and social organizations I noticed that the variations of this initialism or others were dependent on usually two factors: 1) the mission of the organization and 2) the age group that it was either for or was run by. I see this today when certain people I still know who work for organizations within their Native American tribal communities and use the initialism of 2SLGBTQIA+ when speaking or writing about topics and wanting to speak about the larger community. I remember I helped create a website many years ago that instead of using lgbt they decided to use glbt in the name of the website while still using the standard LGBT throughout the website. The reason was because they had done some research that showed people missed the lower case l in the name because the preceding word in the name ended with a d. Thus people saw dl in the middle of the website’s name as just d and so they wanted to avoid people miss-typing it when trying to find the website and opted to make it so the middle letters were dg. There are other initialisms, too, besides MOGII that some organizations use. Again, it depends on how broad the organization’s mission is. A support group organization whose mission is specifically for, say, just transgender people isn’t usually as concerned about the acronym as an organization with a mission that is inclusive of the larger community. Those organizations are often where you see (and people involved with use) either the initialism getting longer or using a completely different initialism. And I’ve noticed a trend among social organizations of using the word “rainbow” rather than use any versions of initialisms. Usually because they don’t want to have to update any initialism if they change and rainbow is understood amongst everyone in the community as an inclusive term. Prior to 2016, I did see some people using the term Qmmunity, Q-munity, or Q-persons, but with the emergence of the conspiracy theory group Q Anon and it’s rise in mentions by media I’ve noticed that those terms using the letter Q have ceased to be used. According to friends who were using it, especially online, they found themselves being mis-identified with that group by people who just associated the capital letter Q used in any similar ways with the conspiracy group. I’ll admit that I did think Qmmunity was clever for English speakers, but didn’t think it catch on with nonEnglish speakers. I remember when there was a plan to have all the various organizations and groups meet up for a conference that a friend of mine had written up a sample invitation letter to go to the organizations’ and groups’ leaders along with a sample poster about the event. He showed it to me and I think it had the longest initialism I have ever seen: LGBTQ?2sGqPAIHUCONHAGS (GSM)(MSGI)(MOGAI)(MOGII)(SGL)(GSD)(GSRM)(MSM)(WSW)+. Thankfully the main organizers decided to just use LGBT+ instead because they felt LGBT is the most well known and they added the + to be inclusive of all other identities aa well as to mean all other initialisms people might use. I always remember that whenever I hear people complain that the initialism is getting to long that in reality it isn’t with the full awareness that the exact initialism used by any organization and group is usually just a reflection of that organization’s understanding of its mission and I’ve seen organizations update the initialism they use, often either because they update their mission statement or because the majority of their members have voted to change it because they want to use a version that they feel better conveys the organization’s mission. As you rightly said, it shows how language continually evolves and is very much alive in its moment. And seeing different variations of the various initialism used by people, especially online, is a reflection of how our understanding of ourselves has evolved, too.
Happy Pride! Even if it’s a bit late (technically the Stonewall Rebellion was from June 28-July 3, 1969 so I think you posting the video now still works). :-)
Honestly, I prefer "GRSM". It's far more concise and þere is no room for infighting over wheþer certain letters apply to certain groups or certain gender, romantic, or sexual minorities belong.
Seriously, þere are people who say asexuals and bisexuals in straight relationships don't belong simply because þey can "pass straight".
@Sanctus Paulus 1962 its dodgy isnt it
@Sanctus Paulus 1962 His name is "Demonic Culture Nut". Demonic culture is another term for virgin barbarian culture. Alas, one could surmise that he is a barbarian, from a Scandinavian region, likely Iceland. It also explains why he'd cave to the demands of the mentally unhealthy community, by referring to them with the letter soup they demand to be called, being discussed in the video.
@Sanctus Paulus 1962 i kinda like it
The more letters, the more it sounds like it comes after the name of a distinguished British gentleman.
Funny how culture shapes things.
English had a word for LGB, but excluded transgenders?
In india, we often refer to them as sexual minorities, and most of the times, we refer to transgender people when we use it.
For the longest time, india had a concept of "third gender"
So until recently, a gay man wouldn't be recognised as a gay man, but a trans woman who just dresses like a guy.
The concepts of homosexuality, while remaining in their original gender is new, and a western concept.
So a male gay couple would have been recognised as a lesbian couple?

Most groups I see prefer LGBTQ+ or LGBT (sometimes with a +). Some Canadian groups add 2S as well. I used to see LGBTQIA+ in some groups, but not as much anymore (mostly to avoid arguments about intersex and asexual people being in the community or not). Other than that, none of these are used outside of the internet. Like actually none of them in any real way. And MOGII/MOGAI also barely exists outside of the internet, and is often a joke.
I’ve mainly seen the I and A removed because of arguments about whether Intersex and Allies should be in the acronym, most people I have come across agree that asexual and aromantic people are part of LGBT+.
I always just use LGBT, sometimes with a plus. I understand others might not feel included, but words are there to serve a purpose and no one in their right mind is going to think I use it to differentiate from LGTBQIA+. LGB however, they are a bunch of mysoginists
@@asterobiology That makes sense too, though I’ve also seen a lot of debates about asexual/aromantic as well. I think those arguments have calmed down in the past few years though.
Something about seeing “Ally” or “straight ally” in the acronym is just so icky to me. Like the community only exists because people from without wanted us out, but now they want in?? The Q stands for queer, which means “deviating from what’s (arbitrarily) considered normal by society” a classification that includes all other categories that have been added. So the addition of more letters afterwards didn’t even make it any more inclusive.
As a bisexual man I find these constant attempt to fit everyone in acronyms and flags ridicules and stupid, it's like this movement is led by a bunch of insecure children.
I liked the Chevron with the trans flag but honestly, the rainbow flag was fine, and black and brown clash way too much with the other colours
Actually I've seen that its the older members of the community who keep trying to add more letters to the acronym. It might be because they arent comfortable with labeling themselves as queer, the younger generation being more comfortable with it since they were never called it as a slur
There was a moment a few years ago when it looked like “QUILTBAG” was going to catch on
I like LGBTQIA best because it inclueds a for asexual
Another acronym I've seen is QUILTBAG: Queer, Unsure, Intersex, Lesbian, Transgender, Bisexual, Asexual/Agender, Gay.
I keep things simple when I say the acronym.
I say LGBTQ.
Pretty simple, I know.
I do the same most of the time. Or i say something like the qeer community. I think Qeer could become a good representational word for us, instead of naming everyone by their letter.
I could demand to have a P for Pansexual in the acronym, but i think thats ridiculous
LGBT isn’t simple though. There are millions of sexual orientations and gender identities. The acronym could go into the millions.
I'm asexual myself but I just use "LGBT" most of the time, occasionally when writing I sometimes use "LGBTQ+" but nothing longer. It's just impractical
The Alphabet Mafia is also pretty funny though
You can say, "Yeah, yeah, yeah whatever guys!" about the BBC-thing, but it has DEFINETELY changed, my friend. And no amount of dismissal on your part will change that.
So it has Q for "queer" which seems to have taken on the meaning of generic not-straight, there's + for "and so on" because there are others not listed, but they still expanded the list to even contain an O for "other" and there are _still_ people who want to make it longer because it doesn't specifically mention them. Sounds rather immature to me.
I'm proudly an Ally, and have been friends with gays, lesbians, transgender, and at least one intersex. I believe everyone has the right to live their lives without judgment....even if that means I'm the only one in their circle on their side.
At least one intersex? This is a weird statement it's like you're trying to collect them all, there's no chance of encountering enough of them to become friends with one of every type unless you're intentionally seeking these people out for "friendship"
@@TommyWashow I guess I could have worded that differently. I just meant that I have one intersex friend, but I may have met others without knowing.
I think P also stands for Poly(amorous).
And I've seen someone adding the letter K for Kink too...
Am I the only one irritated by the way this guy unnaturally drags out the last syllable of the word at the end of each sentence?
Wait...RSVP is a acronym? I didn't know that!? What does it stand for?
It's French: répondez s'il vous plaît
répondez s'il vous plaît means please respond
Rendevous, sil'vous-plait (it's french)
Nobody knows.
It's an initialism not an acronym.

I'm glad you remembered the "+" at the end😂😂😂
I’m so glad that 2S was included! 2 Spirits have been forgotten by the rest of the Gay community.
For anyone wondering, 2 Spirits means that someone the Native American community, or in certain tribes, that someone has both female and male spirits within them, and are actually revered in some tribes. Being 2 Spirit isn’t really a “choice” but something that one self FEELS within them. It’s just a part of their life: just living life as BOTH a female spirit and a male spirit, no matter how they present to society.
agreed !! I'm two-spirit and Cree! it was a nice inclusion
Why worry about what the gay community forgets when there're a dozen other communities?
Are you on crack? Just go with PHPA: People that Hitler Prejudices Against
We tend to use the term "queer" to encompass all in my town
So, long and short, though one acronym is more familiar and recognizable, the others exist for the purposes of inclusivity of or generating recognition for those not covered by shorter acronyms.
Agree with other commenters, though, including the "+" is kind of important to make it not implicitly exclude certain groups.
All I’m going to say is that the + is there for a reason
Summed up, Its basically for the 5% of the country who feels discluded from the bunch. They want to be included too. Everybodys feelings are hurt.
It'a a modern acronym man! LGBTQ+ Subscription gives you new letter every year or so.
i am part of this community, however, i want to give my opinion on something and probably i will get negative comments on it, but here i go: ALLY DOES NOT BELONG IN THE ACRONYM
while i accept allies, i disaprove of them getting a letter in the acronym, because they dont have to go through what the actual queers have to go through, they are just allies and supporters
Ally here. Totally agree.
I don't think it is. I think Name Explain got it wrong, as other people have pointed out.
Second A stands for Aro and Agender, as others already pointed out
Gonna be honest here- although it is most certainly wrong to be homophobic, transphobic etc I find it tiring to be calling people ‘allies’. Because as a straight white male, an ally is a person with common ground to someone or something (for example sharing in a struggle, perhaps a member of a minority like Black people, who actually share in a massive struggle unlike a person such as myself), not some Twitter kid saying they are an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community. Anyway, thanks for sharing your opinions!
I’m asexual and aromantic and I usually use LGBT+ or LGBTQ instead of the longer acronyms. I think it’s important to acknowledge that the community is not just about Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender people, but I also think the longer acronyms are very unwieldy and hinder a good reading flow
No you are not aromantic/asexual...you are suffering from trauma of some sort and should come to terms with it in order to feel the natural human attraction we have to one another...its not good to hold onto such traumas
@@thegooglegnome8933 Why do you think this? Some people dont want to be in *any* sort of relationship. Your comment is basically the same as saying that anyone who is not cishet is suffering from trauma (which is extremely homophobic/transphobic). czcams.com/video/qF1DTK4U1AM/video.html explains what aromantic/asexual is, so that you can actually be educated. *You* are probably the one suffering from trauma in this situation. How can you be so inconsiderate? Oh, i know. You probably have loved someone (romantically) and found out that they were aroace. /t
@@BunnyIsland well you said it not I, only asexual person I've ever met was 100% holding onto sexual trauma and still is...
@@thegooglegnome8933 not everyone who is aroace is suffering from trauma. I'm aroace, and i'm not suffering from trauma.
Just one person isnt the entire community.
My favourite version is LGBT+, which is what they use on UK Government Websites.
The + is there so theres no need for more letters
2:21 Would make more sense to make T Q and A squared 😂
i feel that keeping it simpler would make life easier for these people. these people have a long history of not feeling accepted, and giving them too many options to choose from is just gonna confound and confuse them even more about their place in society. like ordering a pizza with literally any topping you want, but you can't decide which you want. as apposed to having a more select menu of pre-decided combinations (where if you don't like one of the toppings, just swap it out with another). Some people are inherently indecisive (which isn't a good quality), and though freedom of choice is a good thing, it invites indecision. children are taught how to make decisions based on moral guidelines provided by religious texts like the Bible as well as the law of common sense taught via experience through our parents. the kind of decisions these kids eventually make in life is entirely up to them and how they were raised by their parents. It's part of the reason why we like to categorize everything, like in food: if we tell someone we're hungry, the usual response would be "what are you in the mood for?/what do you wanna eat?".
Tbh, I don't understand why straight ally initials should be included here. Thanks for doing the bare minimum of accepting us, but I feel like gate keeping for once. You only get the right of adding your initial if you're NOT straight and/or cis.
It's actually not. Name Explain made a mistake.
@@devononair I know that it isn't, he was telling us about variations of 'LGBTQ' and some of them included 'S'. It wasn't a mistake, I assume
it's likely just one variation
In Esperanto we have "GLAT" (gejoj, lesbaninoj, ambaŭseksemuloj (bi), transseksuloj/genruloj). The G and L haven't switch places so it can be pronounced like a word (which makes the adjective form "GLAT-a" a homonime of "glata" - smooth). I've seen also a lobger version "GLATIK+" ([...], interseksuloj, kviroj, plus). The word "queer" can be used as an umbrella term in English so in Esperanto I say "kviro" (a queer person), "kvira" (queer related), "kvire" (in a queer way, manner), "la kviraro" (the queer community) etc.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I'd be open to the acronym SAGA (Sexuality and Gender Acceptance) or the queer community. Also most of us don't want to add Ally to the Acronym because, the Acronym is supposed to about us and ally is simply an action not an oppressed sexuality or gender.

I don't get one thing. Is it prideful to be HIV infected? Why it is used in such an abbreviation?

They have actually formalised the acronym in our government style manual as LGBTQI+
Why does the king from of the LGBQ+ acronym looks like a password?
Just thinking: all colors are pretty…
Yet, we usually try to match our clothes by limiting the number of colors and avoiding clashing combinations.
Even the people with the worst taste in clothes do not dress up like clowns.
Even the clowns don’t wear their rainbow outfit outside of their workplace.
Wonder why….
Maybe because clowns are never taken seriously??🤔
I definitely want to think of myself as an SA of the llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Community
I think LGBTQIA+ covers a lot of ground but the point of an acronym is to be catchy. LGBT was catchy and easy to say but times have changed and we need a better term to recognise everyone.
I'm seeing things like:
- GSM (Gender and Sexual Minorities)
- SAGA (Sexuality and Gender Acceptance)
These are good. I personally think if we need an acronym for this community, it should be something like that. Or make up a new word completely.
Ideally, we will eventually get to a place where we don't need a word or acronym because, just like the ancient greeks, it won't matter because we're all just people.
POTATO: People Of The Alternative Taste Organization
Transgender- isn’t it about “gender” and not about sexual preferences?
What does it have to do with LGB?
the longest one i've ever seen is 2JLGBTQQIAASP+
what they stand for i have no idea
Alphabet people works for me and my friends because we just can't keep up. One day we were colored, the next we weren't. Then Negro, then black, now African American and people of color but still considered black which the huge majority simply are not. I'm browner. And why does anyone have to declare their sexuality? The color of your skin announces what you probably are, sexuality isn't usually obvious and I personally dislike the Alphabet people claiming they're like us. If you can hide it then no you're not. It's all so annoying and just too much. We're all people and that should be enough!
Asexual unde a flag for sexuality, is that not a bit like sort atheists under a umbrella term like 'religious'?
I thought the + clarified the extra letters.
Why the acronym is getting longer?
Could it be that the latest additions (after LGB) want to capitalize on the attention and achievements of those who actually did the hard work?🤔
The acronym "QUILTBAG" is pronouncable and fairly inclusive, and seems sort of friendly. "Queer. Undecided, Intersex,Lesbian,Bisexual,Ally, Gay" I had a lot of colorful fabric scraps left from a sewing project, and I made a QUILTBAG - and it wound up in the hands of the gayest gay man I've ever known (a dear friend)
Quildbag is asking to be a slur lol
this is because we're interacting in negative space:
LGBT+ is literally just EVERYTHING except straight/cis/etc
its like describing the unknowable universe as we find it, and making every galaxy its own letter.
EVERYTHING aside from Straight cis people
If you add ally in there than that just involves straight people so that’s not as correct technically
Sttaight Ally is in there too, watch the video.
@@MichaelSidneyTimpson I’d say it’s debatable since it does not apply to all versions/interpretations of the acronym.
@@MichaelSidneyTimpson I would argue that almost no one includes ally or straight in the acronym… like I’ve been in this community for many years, including on Tumblr, and I never saw SA in the acronym.

If one more alphanumeric character or symbol gets added to LGBTQ2+, I'll just refer to the group as 0CH (non-cisgender or non-heterosexual).
