      One of the worst Manuel's I've ever seen. I had no idea what the lights indicate. Or what the C and V buttons do. Personally I would rate this charger very low because of the lack of instructions or labeling on the charger itself.

    I've had mine for just over a year now. Excellent piece of kit, never had a single issue (not even with the spring loaded contacts). Bought it with brand new HG2s and 25Rs, this device has been the sole charging method for these cells, they are still after a year of constant use (cells would cycled through and used within a max of 3 days of being fully charged to empty), functioning brilliantly (minus the normal degradation of capacity)

    Great video. I've had the 'New i4" from Nitecore for a whole now. But recently had some NiCd AA batteries get (fairly) hot while charging. The charger didn't indicate they were bad. After trying to use the batteries however they went dead quick. Using the unit today, it's charging my assorted AA's fine, it seems, and they're not getting hot. Any way, generally my experience with the charger has been Very good. But at least once it was acting peculiar. I also charge 18650's, and it wonderful that it's completely plug and play. Although I did read the manual, and it does read like half dedicated stereo instructions at times.

    There seems to be a variation in the product because mine had smooth lugs on the negative sliding bracket which often would not make contact with the negative end of the batteries. One had to jiggle the battery a bit to get then to touch the bracket, but they often work loose during charging and you return to find that you battery is as dead as when you started.

    Coming from the I2.. I think the holding on this one is worse! it gets hotter and did the same test and am not too impressed. Might invest in a better charger as these rare sony batteries were hard to find genuine ones (not re-wrapped) so I would like to have them last as long as possible and the heating up is quite alarming. • @Jim7550
    @Jim7550 Před 7 lety

    Excellent information on the New i4 charger. My understanding is lithium batteries will last longer (more charge cycles) if charge is just shy of 4.2V as your video shows. The slight loss of power should not be noticeable. The NiMh batteries get quite hot in this charger. The heat can not be good for them so I will not allow overnight charging.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  Před 7 lety

      Yes that is true with regard charging cycles, not a bad thing to be a little under the 4.2v... the problem isn't the Li-ion charging it's the Ni-MH heat and termination. It's better than the new i2 which was under the 4.15V at times.
      I'm not overly impressed with the Ni-MH side of things, few chargers heat batteries that much which isn't good for them (leaving aside the lower voltage readings which can vary a bit). It's not a fast charging rate, the Opus C3100 can charge Ni-MH at 1 amp across 4 cells and they remain pretty cool. Perhaps the design isn't allowing enough airflow to the transformer

    • @Jim7550
      @Jim7550 Před 7 lety +1

      I might place low value resistors or lamps to limit current to 50/100mA on each NiMh cell, thus lower cell temperatures. Thanks again.

      i found out the 18650 batteries on mine dont get hot only the case gets hot on mine but maybe my AA batteries get a little warm .but i have got a fast charger for my AA and AAA batteries that get realy hot nowt like the nitecore

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  Před 7 lety

      Hi the 18650's are a fair bit larger so don't have the same heat build up. AA's do even with all 4 bays in use, charge rate isn't high either. A lot of fast chargers do, but the Opus BTC3100 doesn't because it's got a fan. D4 doesn't have any obvious heat build up even at the same charging rate for AA's (ie all 4 in use 375mA). Case probably needs more ventilation slots

    • @Jim7550
      @Jim7550 Před 7 lety

      Hi Baz, Subsequent charges of NiMh cells don't show heat build up the first charge did on new cells that had been in storage over a year . Charge voltage is 1.405 so I'm happy with the charger. Voltage on the Li cells end up at 4.02 volts so again all is good as far as my low current use. Only thing is the "V" button seems to have zero effect. anyway thanks for your observations and good video. Bye. Jim

    I have older version of i4 for some time and I figure out when I use 12V adapter it heat much less(about half less) than with standard plug when it need to use internal transformer, so it could be heat by transformer.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  Před 4 lety +1

    • @MehemLED
      @MehemLED Před 4 lety

      @@MrBazReviews Since I figure it out I'm using it only with 12V adapter. In my country I can get used 12V 1-2A adapter for 2€, it's easy to replace it when it broken, and I think charger would last longer because less heating.
      I used very old Nitecore i4(maybe first version), and when it broken I get 2014 version and now I'm using it. When it get broken I will get 2016 version which you reviewed.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  Před 4 lety

      It happens with all cells, including the Eneloop so I think that's not likely the issue. I believe the problem is the design isn't great for getting rid of head (prob the built in transformer)

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  Před 7 lety +1

      The default charging speed is 750mA for larger cells up to two (18650/26650) you have to set it manually for lower tthan 1.5amps if using a single cell. See 3:25 for the charging speeds

      my cell is a 18650, once I insert it into a slot when no other cell is charging, the 1.5A led turns on automatically, so that means it's charging at 1.5A right? How can I turn that off in order to charge it slower?

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  Před 7 lety +7

      Press the C button when you insert the cell to change the current from 1.5 to normal which is 0.75. It's quite safe to charge a single 18650 at 1.5amps that's about as high as you can charge without having any detrimental effect on recharge cycles.

      Shortens the life span over charging nothing bad likely to happen, unprotected cells can vent (but need to be higher than that), protected ones have a circuit that prevents charging above 4.25V

    I have noticed that I can't change the the 1.5 amp down on single 18650 charge. After charging 1 battery I get 500 hits. If I charge the same battery with another which drops the amps, I get 800 hits. This automatic 1.5 amp is unacceptable to me as I feel that it is killing my cells and I use single cell MODs. I can't find a way to tell it to charge at lower amp for single.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  Před 4 lety

      Hold the C button down to get out of the 1.5A charge rate - the red light shows up by default for one cell for 1.5A charging. 1.5A is unlikely to hurt any 18650 for cycles, most of those high drain cells can charge at up to 4A (that def will impact cycles). Only the high capacity ones say 3500mAh have a recommended charging speed of 1.0A (they can take more that's their best speed to preserve cycles), other ones can charge way faster

    • @Adrian_Mason
      @Adrian_Mason Před 4 lety

      @@MrBazReviews Thank you for responding but with 1 cell the hold C button does nothing and I definitely notice a huge use difference. It may not be hurting the total life of the cell but it is hurting the single charge usability. I actually thought my cells were dying after using this for the first time, but they are fine if I charge 2 or more cells in it. It seems that C button only works for making 1 of multiple cells to charge at 1.5 amps. I guess I will need to buy a single 18650 charger or one that gives better user control over possible trickle charge.

      Hi Garth you can manually set the charging for a cell such as a 18650 to 0.75A from 1.5A (which is the default). It doesn't have a "low" charging mode like the D4 though where you could set individually lower charging current per channel regardless of battery type. If you are using smaller cells such as AA/AAA's, 18350's etc then the default charging speed is 0.5A or 0.375 if using all 4 bays. Hope that helps a bit

      Hi charging rate is 0.375a for four cells so it's going to take a while to charge all 4 bays with 18650's (depends on capacity around 7-9 hours). You can charge one cell at 1.5a that's about as fast as it goes or charge in sequence at 1.5 amps moving to the next slot. 2 slots can charge at the same time at a rate of 0.75a. For 21700 it's fine as it is for most 18650. Some 18650's ie lower drain I'd charge at 1amp, the high drain cells are fine at that speed. It won't effect their lifespan it's only when doing really fast charging (some can take 3-4amps) that will shorten their life. If you are vaping that discharges cells faster so that is why vapers tend to get through cells quicker.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  Před 7 lety

      Yes you don't have to adjust the settings it's only if you want to change voltage or use the sequential charging (ie higher charge rate then move to the next slot). If you just put one larger cell in (ie 18650) then it will default to 1.5amp charging, 2 it drops to 0.75 amp etc.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  Před 7 lety +2

      Depends I prefer the D4 the i4 isn't a bad choice if you need faster charging on Li-ion cells (ie one cell at 1.5 amps 2 cells it's the same as the D4 aka 0.75a). If you also charge Ni-MH I would go for the D4 as it's better at charging those cells.
