    There are 2 areas of vertical progression that are unique to commander: 1) Improve the collective fun. 2) Multiplayer tactics.
    That first area is the biggest area with the most room for growth. Before the game we improve our communication to help identify which decks would be a fun game. During the game, starting as early as mulligans, we don't necessarily play optimally. After the game we reflect on how we can improve our decks with the collective fun in mind (not just with power in mind). This is why skilled commander players are resistant to power creep, because some of our deck improvements intentionally deescalate the power of our decks.
    The second area is also interesting.

    I think its important that the player regardless of format choice develop a deeper understanding of the rules and interactions. One of the big issues are players that are new and skipping standard and diving right into edh

    • @JohnFromAccounting
      @JohnFromAccounting Před měsícem +1

      Standard is a great format for new players because of the limited card pool and the lower number of mechanics to learn.

    I do understand and agree with the sentiment that we should be playing more single target removal (I try to play 7-9 single target removal with 3-ish board wipes), but sometimes you just don't draw it or you're in rakdos and have no enchantment removal. Also, with how much power creep there is in the game now, even if you do remove the threat, they or someone else just plays another threat. Lol My level up moment is just to accept that I can't win every game and to just try my best and not take a casual game too seriously. 😅

  • @Sinistra359
    @Sinistra359 Před měsícem +1

    Idk if I'm better than I was say a year ago, but I do play differently now now that I understand the rules more due to having encountered multiple rules interactions. So I guess I did get better in a way, but still punt from time to time. Which is fine because it leads to fun for the table lol.

    I think the best way to improve in general is to not only try out other formats, but also other tcgs as well.
    I've been playing pokemon for 20+ years and attending pokemon worlds for 11 years now.
    Soon after trying out other tcgs I improved drastically.
    Also top 8 other tcg regionals.
    2019 I tried magic/commander for the first time in search for a more casual format. At first it was like that.
    Over time the level of the group grew and nowadays we're nowhere near casual anymore.
    Next year I wanna try out modern, pioneer is also interesting but kinda dead in my area.

    31:38 funny enough, a few years back when I built my Ezuri Claw of Progress deck, I really didn't want to spend the money ona cyclonic rift. So what essentially happened is that I built a Simic Primal Surge deck with about 50 creatures with power 2 or less and a thassas oracle at the end. Mostly Simic Goodstuff, Tokens, Toolbox etc. and insanely susceptible to boardwipes but hey.. still a cool deck

  • @erfarkrasnobay
    @erfarkrasnobay Před měsícem

    Also, big upgrade for players is remeberibg that board wipe for one creature is still better then losing to one creature. And for me majority of edh players just dont play enought any removals. Having 3 wrathes per 99 cards? No single target removal? Did you never saw elfball untap on turn 3-4?

    I havent played mtg for few years, but I was always consider myself as commander player. But never have an issue with 1v1 formats, I have constructed dozen of rogue decks and performed kinda competitive in constructed enviroment, both times my failure in nationals was Draft. You know, competitive players not very good in reacting to non-orthodox decks, for exemple while most stompy meta was MonoG or Gb stompy (Dominaria khaladesh), players was not ready to side against Gu stompy. Btw playing commander and teaching new players was my motivation to became judge, and lot of constructed players was asked ruling about obscure interaction because EDH has lots of such interactions.

    Being a modern players let's me play so much better than the average casual EDH player that it isn't even funny.
    Your avg EDH player barely understands how their precon deck works. Let alone fine details that squeeze the most value out of your situation.

    • @JohnFromAccounting
      @JohnFromAccounting Před měsícem +1

      Playing complicated legacy decks definitely lets you improve as a player. The 60 card constructed environment allows you to consider every out you have in your deck, so you end up playing better. You consider a few cards your opponent could have, and play around what you think they have. Sometimes they have the fourth Force of Will and you lose, but that's Magic. If you can get reads on how your opponent has been playing, almost like in poker, then it's almost like you can see their hand sometimes.

    lol i have usually between 10-20 pieces of interaction in my commander lists depending how proactive vs reactive the list is. the more you push the envelop and faster you go, the less interaction you need imo, just go go go and win before they do. and even those decks have at least 10 pieces to interact with my opponents

    • @NStripleseven
      @NStripleseven Před měsícem +1

      True. If you have 10 pieces of removal in your deck, you’ll see on average 2 per game (assuming you get to look at 20 cards over the course of it). I have never seen a game where there weren’t at least 2 problematic permanents that I’d benefit from being able to deal with, but that nobody else was going to. Often it’s more, even.

    I don't have eternal prospects of getting better. I got enough solid pods won under my belt to no longer care. Once you achieve a certain point, its just a matter of growing as a FUN player. As a player that can enjoy every game while making games enjoyable. Idc about getting "better" anymore bc the power scale at that point is no longer fun, just excessively power hungry.

    I know I'm improving in commander when I can introduce new friend with little Magic experience, can lend them a hand with any weird interactions, and everyone in the pod had a good time. Commander is about having fun, and when more people I am playing with are having fun then I am being a better commander player.

  • @shadowKunai

    Ive been playing EDH for quite a while now but a constructed player at heart. My whole issue i guess is that fun is subjective. in the idea of choosing fun over optimal plays for me the optimal play is fun and I think the political aspect of EDH isnt fun at all.
    But i guess thats my constructed mind. I love mtg as a game but it feels like the current direction towards commander to the detriment of constructed players is pushing me out of the game. I can no longer play the game they way Ive played it for the last 12 years. feels bad man

    As a Modern player, I feels like Wizards didn't test the cards in MH3, I felt like they only cared about the Commander card.
    I play Jund and I felt the Goyf token thing was a insult, while only getting one new Goyf in the format. That's better in Death Shadow. It's not bad in Jund Saga, but they didn't understand what cards they were making or testing. I felt sense they were making a Jund deck we would get a Jund color card in the set, or a few cards for Jund. We do use some new cards and we are doing well, but it feels like MH3 was just built to give us a middle finger.
    I see all the commander cards that were reprinted hogging up slots that could have been for other cards for the modern format. MH3 was a set that disappointed me as a player.

    • @JohnFromAccounting

    I started with commander and moved into constructed. Yes, it made me learn rules, turns, phases and all that to a greater degree. But the biggest take away for me was conceding when the game is over. Commander has a massive problem with people not conceding and moving on to the next game, as a table. This lack of concession is gigantic part the community being so split on whether rule zero is enough of if the rules committee needs to ban a bunch of stuff. You sit through painful games instead of calling it and moving on.
