- Do You Make These Stupid PC Mistakes
A lot of people believe crazy pc myths that they have been told or watch and read online. A lot of this stuff is pure myth and not true. Some of these pc myths are old and still going strong today in 2024.

I 'sped up' my mates PC a few years back. I had to come clean with him; all I'd done was disabled unnecessary star up apps, and switched off Windows animations.
0:08 Thanks Britec09 for calling out the problems and flaws of CZcams, we need more of this done everyday
People fall for this stuff all the time. clickbait
Linux doesn't make my computer immune to virus, BUT it immune to my smaller brother now
Linux is having issues right now. Did you see the thing with Linux Nix where the leftist activists are trying to take it over and boot out anyone who is not for lGBTQ and DEI?
Yes W7 is a risk but even worse is that I know people still running XP and no amount of trying to convince them to upgrade has had any effect.
Windows 7 is a risk
@@Britec09 Didn't mean to imply it wasn't. Was saying that if you think people are taking a risk running 7 there are people still running XP that think they're fine but they won't listen. Rewording the above to make that clearer
Indeed, Windows 7 is probably going to be more secure than Windows XP whether or not it is supported either. And with the proper precautions, Windows 7 is simply still usable and not as dangerous as people make it out to be in my opinion.
I'm glad I made the switch to Linux, but if you're running 10-year-old hardware on Windows, you'll still be running 10-year-old hardware on Linux. I made the switch because I became fed up with Microsoft's antics and greed, not because it would make my system faster.
Windows 7 works fine as an offline device, my laptop still has 7 Pro on it and it still gets Defender and Malicious Tools updates when I occasionally connect it up to the network. Haven't full-timed 7 in quite a long time though, 11 is on the horizon.
Say it, benchmark, benchmark, prove it.
Already have, but new updated one coming.
My pc has 166 processes running and those combined consume less than 1% of my cpu. So even if that would affect fps in a game, if you have 120fps or 121.2fps (1% more), you won't notice any difference.
I remember in the 90s and especially in tbe early 00s, television commercials advertised clean your PC and make your PC faster services. Good times.
After switching to Linux on that same computer and same hardware, my computer was faster. Simple tasks like boot up and running apps happend noticably quicker than it did on windows 10. That was my biggest switching point.
I understand Linux is not for everyone, especially since they are used to Windows, but it is for me.
If your PC performs well, you don't need to tweak it to improve performance. Windows is optimized. It's your old hardware that is slow
I agree
Windoooz is super bloated, only the LTS and especially windoooz server versions are lighter.
and defender makes it even slower, and that is why Linux runs faster on the same hardware
Windows 11 is far from optimized, have you seen the amount of garbage that comes when you do a fresh install of win11? Best solution here is just make an unattended.xml file and your good and if U wanna take it a step further use Chris Titus PowerShell tool and use the basic debloat and that's it, that'll be the best it will run and have a nice clean interface free of garbage bloat.
Fool
@@xprcloud You are right. The reason to tweak windows is to fully utilise old hardware performance. Someone with like a 9th to 11th generation hardware and 32GB of RAM needs no tweaking WINDOWS.
As much as people hate Microsoft edge and Microsoft store (myself included), if you remove them it will break your OS down the line and you'll have issues with certain apps not working and it will break certain features.
@@trashcleaner for me links and redirects got broken and some apps didn't work as intended strangely enough
This subject never gets old and has kept more PC techs than I dare imagine busy.
I do not like running other peoples scripts. There is too many questions about security, (you should only run scripts you create because you dont know what else they may have put in.) but those scripts also tend to remove things that you may find out later you need. Now the best way to learn how about your computer is to try things and fix what you break. But this should be done on a virtual machine and not on your actual bare metal OS.
This is all why I’ve just bought an Apple IMac Pro…. Yes, it’s changing apples for oranges, but, it’s better the Devil you know than not. 👍🇨🇦
And as a long time subscriber, thanks for your excellent advice and insight. And your advice to keep Win Defender as “backup” is, of course, exactly the right approach.
I'd like to see those benchmarks specifically in cpu heavy games like Hell Divers 2 or any RTS game with a lot going on on screen.
Only tweaks I do right off the bat is to undervolt my CPU & GPU for lower temperatures.
I have two PCs, on my second I removed Edge, Windows Defender, Firewall... and more other junk to be able to play my games smoothly. Why? Well, because my second PC never connects to the internet.
On the same hardware, I find Linux performs slightly better than Windows. Once you start loading Windows up it can start to crawl on even newer hardware once you get to it's limit. Doing the same tasks on Linux, you get that little bit more out of it because it's not bogged down with unnecessary processes and a little bit leaner.
I still have some older systems running old version of Windows. However, these aren't daily drivers, they're never connected to the internet or even my network. They're stand alone and have once specific task (arcade machines, jukeboxes etc). However if I could get that software working on Linux, I would have switched them over. That a "when I get around to it" job.
Anybody that takes computer advice from a 14 year old gamer on the internet as opposed to an actual expert deserves what they get. Not saying anything against gamers - just fact check your sources, is all.
So informative i like it mate 🤩
Glad to hear it
Good video.2 things.A lot of major corporations/big tech/businesses actually use Linux ,especially when it comes to the security side of things. There's even an infamous video of Gates himself admitting to using Linux when it comes to some of his different 'ventures' .& 2,I agree the # of Processes running doesn't really slow down your PC nor do you gain more FPS,but when I finally managed to COMPLETELY remove Windows Widgets,my PC when Idle, went from using 12-13% of RAM to 9%.
Brian, I have followed you from the time I got my very first computer, and as far as I'm concerned you are the most down-to-earth, tech-savvy tech video creator. You should have millions of followers. Thank you for your wisdom. You have saved me so many times I can't count them all. 👋👋👋
Some of those processes are there to speed things up or allocate ram to certain to certain processes that need to run faster. If you're experiencing sluggishness, it's probably because you got too much junk installed or a million tabs open, and of course ads and tracker that are constantly requesting access. There are better ways to deal with this issue. Run an ad / tracker blocker on the network level.
One can never be good enough at Ui missing the Ui clicking sometimes happens but that's when you can adjust the cursor speed
Hi, Brian. You said what I was thinking. If Windows Defender, the Firewall, and System Resources are enough to bog your PC down, It's simply time to either do a big upgrade or just buy a new PC.
That'd be great if everyone was made of money but for a good swaf of the population they can't afford house rent let alone a new better pc. As lng as this is the case all these tweaking apps, optimizing apps, and optimization videos are gonna remain popular.
If you do not need a new pc because you aren't a gamer, then Linux is the answer. It will respond faster than windows on your old pc because it is not as resource intensive.
If by all means you need windows, then yes, get a stronger pc that can run windows and its software.
@@bkThund3r I tried Linux Mint and it didn't work for me. First of all, I write for a living and Linux couldn't run the writing software I need to make my living. Then, after an update, It booted to a black screen. I went back to Windows 10. You can keep Linux for yourself.
@@bkThund3r Liinux is having issues right now. specifically with Nix. apparently we have some activist trying to ban everyone who isn't down with LGBTQ and DEI. If your a developer an your not down with those philosophy's then they don't want you to be able to contribute or submit extensions.
I am just going to say it, if no one wants to use modern versions of Windows but is afraid of using older versions such as Windows 7 because of security risks, just switch to Linux at this point. You indeed can always debloat Windows 10 and 11 though, but it is honestly still easier to use Linux or even Windows 7 as long as programs are up to date and working in my opinion since neither of those oses need much to any debloating at all.
Edit: If anyone here is still stubborn and still planning on using Windows 7 nowadays like me even after this video, I would suggest installing all updates and probably using Microsoft Security Essentials for an antivirus or any antivirus that works for you and is trustworthy. It is also worth mentioning that I recommend using Firefox 115 ESR until support ends otherwise you can just go straight to Supermium or perhaps Mypal. Even with that said though, I would still recommend dualbooting Linux in case there is a problem with using Windows 7.
The only thing a low process count has done for me is cut my shutdown time from 5 seconds to 3.
I love the 🤡s that say before optimization 32fps & after optimization 278fps and all they're doing is putting all graphic settings on lower then low & dropping resolution then the comments section is full even more 🤡s saying 'OMG this works' makes me wonder how these 🤡s manage to find the power switch to there computer.
yes please make the video with before and after benchmarks lets see if any of these optimizers actually improve throughput any at all.
Another awesome video Britec09. I never make any of these mistakes and don't believe in these myths.
Good for you
You have no idea how much I hate clickbaits in CZcams but specially those related to PC like "improve games performance by +999 FPS for free" and all they to is clean system temp files and the exact same placebo tweaks as the rest and even worse, they suggest to disable every protection while telling users to run a bunch of high privilege shit they share with an url full of nasty ads.
I admit that I have tested those, but a lot are over my head anyway since I on;y have an Intel onboard video card, for example and I always use a restore point first like those guydes say anyway. I also admit that even I get tired of using Chris's tool regularly and recently found a video on Microsoft's own tool Wintoys as well as their own PC Manager, so I just do that in a safe way/
In the beginning, I also didn't have any anti-virus software on my pc (more than 20 years ago). And I was infected but didn't notice anything until i noticed there was a .eml file in EVERY folder on my harddrive. I found that weird and installed an anti-virus and it appeared I had over 6000 virusses on my pc, all those .eml files were a virus related file. Since then, I never ran my pc without an anti-virus. My pc didn't perform any less with that anti-virus software running and with those 6000 virusses present on my system, there was literally nothing weird going on. No software crashing, no weird artifacts, all software kept working fine, no indication at all, except for those .eml files being everywhere, even on every partition and separate harddrive. But they can do alot of damage, like wiping files, limiting your internet bandwidth by consuming it with constant upstream of data to a hacker for example or spamming servers with DDOS attacks or emails, or even get rid of system files, crippling your entire pc, or scrambling your data (ransomware).
Linux varies, there are heavy ones that will run no better than Windows on dated hardware, and lightweight ones that will fly on hardware that Windows would crawl on - Zorin being a somewhat heavier one.
Linux Mint has 3 flavours of interface..
Xfce - the lightest
MATE - medium
Cinnamon - the heaviest
With the heavier ones being generally nicer in appearance, though all 3 follow a "Windows friendly" style like Zorin
Zorin is nice
Zorin can go a little overboard on graphic effects... could possibly tame that down to run on weaker hardware
Yes, but that’s not because it somehow makes old hardware perform better than in windows, it’s only because some distros are written with old hardware in mind while Windows is not.
Linux is having issues right now. Did you see the thing with Linux Nix where the leftist activists are trying to take it over and boot out anyone who is not for lGBTQ and DEI?
No balance in this video at all lol
Hmm drives me mad Brian hearing this same old thing from those who spruik this nonsense so much that it becomes so banal. The only query is - is why do I not get a total number of processes when I open the Task Manager??
Processes are programs in memory
1: Trusting Bill
Great! The Truth will set you free!
Those people are crazy and will never believe it
lets give you the lowest end lap top there is an then when you run advanced system care on it an notice that despite what you were told about it your computer nows does everything 10 times faster than it did before you ran it you too will become one of those crazy people. Especially if the low end computer is all you can afford. Once you've actually had that experience no matter how much some one tells you it's just placebo an doesn't do anything you will not believe them! In other words this is a highly subjective subject. If you got a 3000 dollar computer that already fly's like a bat out of He** of course you not going to notice any difference but if you got a potato pc you will definitely notice an improvement.
Hi it's a good job we have you to point out the sillyness of these people so thank you I feel in the last few months there have been more attacks aimed at windows 11 and I am going by the of malicious malware updates I have recieved best regards Andy Allen.
1 question do you recommend turning off pagefile.sys from system i have 12gb of ram here lemmi know thanks
pagefile.sys should be left to windows to handle it
@@Britec09 and if i turn it of what can happen
I am sure you don't have anything against Linux users, I just believe you are annoyed at the ones who think they are better than everyone. Sadly, many Linux users are this way (especially many of the ones that use a certain distribution).
I am a Linux user of 2+ years and am very happy. I use Linux Mint, it has made my computer usage faster because of the software resources. I don't down talk windows users but I am not happy where Microsoft is going.
I do not use ny PC for gaming so Linux is perfect for me.
If you are happy with Windows or Mac or Linux, that is great. Let others have their opinions and choices as long as it isn't hurting anyone, let's not call those who do something different condescending names. I am speaking to the genera public, not anyone in particular.
I am always watching your videos, it is interesting to see what windows is up to from time to time.
All I see from your video is someone saying things without any proof from benchmarks or latency tests, telling people not to do something because they are wrong. Are we supposed to blindly believe you? That's not how it works.
And just because people use the wrong term, it doesn't mean they are wrong about noticing a change. Linux is lightweight, so they have a better experience on it with a bit more responsiveness. Maybe if Windows wasn't full of bloatware and nonsense, it would be snappier and less resource-hungry =)
How is your task manager in dark mode? Is it a Windows 11 option?
Yes, Windows 11
Didn’t know that…… I’m going to do that right away. 👍🇨🇦
Sage words of advice!
can you even play games Red Dead Redemption 2 and the sims on Linux?
Red Dead yes.... Sims, apparently, not tried it.
Yes, I have tried installing linux on a second nvme and not only it was not faster, it was laggier and full of problems, like games freezing and a lot of software incompatabilities. A debloted Windows will not make your pc faster but much less annyoing with all that useless crap from microsoft..
Good stuff❤
Thanks 🔥
try autoruns
My PC has Linux Mint on it. It has never had any other operating system. I always scan my system and run my updates. Linux Mint makes the computer work better than windows, for FREE !!!
If you want to speed up a windows computer reformat and install Linux. At least you your not installing Spyware
Don't know yet nice thumbnail
Cheers
11 is mistake
I am rocking Windows98 in 2024
×O× and undervolted but Temps are good now😅
Nice
Brian. No Linux user speaks of "Faster computer" meaning CPU / Bus speeds as you suggest. That is completely ridiculous. Quite obviously they mean operationally. Were you were trolling?
Britec09 it reduces background tasks hogging ram
Hi Brian can you do video on vpn software please stevebp
Linux seems faster because there is less to do on it. jk
If it isnt broke, do not fix it.
Of course and also: don't delete random system files thinking they're a virus: did this once, can't get the files back once they're gone
@@Specialist1Aim Agreed, also never clean the Registry.
wise words
OS fine tuning is not for asholes. If you know exactly what you do , the benefits are huge. If you don't know what you do the disaster is guaranded. The truth is that can not everyone be a programmer and a lot of idiots can't follow even step by step directions to perform simple tasks. Don't blame the tweeks which try to make "Home" and "Pro" editions looks like LTSCs. MS respond for bloatware not the creators who try to debloat the OS.
Is our nature to hund max performances with minimum cost , but sometimes we must understud that we need the help from an expert to do that properly.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY USA 248 years
162?? How about 2000 useless .exe in the background ... On a hdd ... It will take 1h to reset .... Come man u're a nice guy ... 😊
Process or in Linux terms PID I have way more than that of claim 100s 200s try Thousands even 10 000s just the way it suppose to work, processes do stop.Over time typically milliseconds 1000 milliseconds is 1 second. Just depends on kernel config. could be 3000 milliseconds so 3 secs maybe more or alil less for memory in terms of loading and clearing cache bufffer and so on. Having Higher memory is good too! I will still not use Windows!
Insane people
They are
I have to AGREE with you, some people are DUMM
Some of the ganers might be but the average user is just naive which is not the same thing.
I don't use Windows at all outside the corporate world (and in there, Windows definitely has a very bad name. MS has a very bad name because in that environment, you're exposed to all of MS's crud and can't escape it. Some of it is IT department's fault, some of it is just that MS has terrible software.)
I chose Linux in 1995. While I'll defend that choice for me, I won't suggest that anyone else make their choice this way based on how I tell them it works well for me. I'm privileged to not need Windows-only software. I of all people should know how this goes, because I have a Mac for some of its Mac-only software I use. I use the thing that gets the work done. I'm just lucky enough to not need Windows to do the work.
Why don't you say what you really mean? 😆
Blah Blah Blah..Doom and Gloom video, what are you? my mother?
YES I WILL RUN WITHOUT antivirus, just like I have since forever, I HAVE BACKUPS,
will re install in case of an issue.
