WoW! Those are gorgeous! One thing you may be interested in knowing is that the bird’s-eye maple figure is caused by a disease in the tree, and so is spalted maple. Curly, flame, tiger, etc., is caused from the tree growing so big and heavy that the grain becomes crushed over the years. Basically, it gets sort of “folded” back and forth over itself so that you see alternating layers of cross grain and end grain. All figured woods are beautiful, and those two flutes are incredible. great video. you may know this already but i will comment on finishing tiger maple. if you look to authentic flintlock builders they use a technique called aqua fortis. it is only used on maple. now a days it is simplified by the fact that you can buy ferric nitrate crystals already processed. a small bottle of crystals will go a long way. once you have your project completely prepped for the finish, dilute the crystals in water (1 part crystals to 5 parts of water , by volume. only mix a small amount it goes far). brush it onto the sanded tiger maple, let it dry, warm it up with a heat gun and it will blush to that nice warm reddish brown. once you have it blushed the wood apply you oil finish and you will have a remarkable classy finish. it may sound complicated but if you do it once you will find it easy and never use stain on tiger maple again. i learned it from a muzzleloader builder. with the processed ferric nitrate crystals this is safe process thank you for sharing your videos, knowledge and skills with us. awsum tom
Especially loved the playing at the end. Where can I get a good beginner flute from a woodworker here in America. Texas specifically. Are there woodworkers forums somewhere with an ads section? In Seattle, I rode the ferry to the islands and met a man who plays atop deck. It was raining and I thought myself the only person outside. Till I heard his flute. I wasn't sure where he was. And concerned if I watched, he might stop. So I sat and listened a good while. Eventually my curiosity got the best of me and I found him pressed into a corner trying to not get wet. I faced the other way and kept my distance as he played on. The ferry having crossed was beginning to pack those exiting to the front. So we spoke briefly and said goodbye. He encouraged me to look for one. It has been something I will regret if I don't find one. Thanks Donald. That deep haunting melody reminded me my breaths on this world are numbered. I need to get to it. I want a deep one as well. His was deep but much smaller. About the length of a hand. Bless you! 🙏🏻👵🏻
