I have thought this a lot but Twoset walking the walk with what they preach about Practice is probably the thing I admire about them the most. We've heard Ray say it before, and now Carlos! It gives me so much motivation and excitement to tackle things knowing that I can improve and knowing that there are people out there--relatable, non-intimidating people like Brett and Eddy--who are doing it everyday as well. Mad prop to them: I'd never thought I'd enjoy classical music and its rich culture and history as much as I do with them as my passion-driven guides.

Some of the things Carlos said about TwoSet were so sweet. It's actually hilarious to see TwoSet meet people who are really influential and high up in the classical world, like Hilary Hahn, for example, because TwoSet is always incredibly nervous to meet their heroes (or in this case, their heroes' instruments) but then they always discover that their heroes are also huge fans of TwoSet. Look at the smiles on everyone's faces in this video - it's almost like a romance. If you weren't involved in the classical music world before TwoSet existed, you may not realize it, but they have absolutely changed the atmosphere for this entire community. No wonder they're loved.

Love the video! The point about the Lady Blunt at 8:20 was interesting; it sold in 1971 for 200,000 and then in 2011 for 16,000,000 which at first sounds like a lot but if you do the math that's an annual return of about 11.6%.
As a comparison, if you just invested that 200k in the S&P 500 from 1971 to 2011, you would have seen an annual return of ~10.1%, so honestly even though it sounds like a lot it's not that huge an appreciation.
But the plot twist here is inflation; Carlos says that the price it sold at in 1979 was the "equivalent" of 200k (presumably in 2011 dollars at the time of second sale), so with an annual average inflation rate of ~4.4%, that's actually an annual inflation-adjusted real return on the violin of 16% compared to 5.7% in the market, so pretty dope!
Thanks for coming to my ted talk lmao

Interesting (as opposed to iNtErEsTiNg! 😊) I was wondering, if the prices for top instruments have increased at that rate, who is raking in the money? Answer, it seems, nobody is making an outrageous profit - given that the cost of trading in these instruments is clearly very high, as is the cost (insurance, security etc) of keeping them, or lending them to soloists. I was surprised Carlos revealed anything about when he would be travelling with the Da Vinci.

Thanks for the analysis! 16% is wonderful but I think the best return is being able to enjoy and play your investment. You can't do that by investing money in the index.
But yes, as pointed out above, you need to factor in maintenance, repairs/restoration, insurance, auction house fees (I don't know about Tarisio but Sotheby's and Christie's is a good chunk of percentage), etc. That said, it may not cost the difference between 16% and 5.7%.
From an investment standpoint, would it be easier to estimate return from investing in the index fund or in a Strad? Also, if somehow the Strad was stolen or destroyed, how much is the insurance payout? How would they evaluate the value? I think for anyone to invest in instruments, they probably have an appreciation (no pun intended) for music.

It is fascinating how times have changed, when a CZcams channel can bring a big value to an international and leading auction house. Most of the audience watching these videos are like me, with a passion for classical music but without being a very accomplished violinist. The extraordinary aspect of this channel is that also world class violinists like Hilary Hahn, next generation like Chloe Chau and even the older generation like Maxim Vengerov, also watch this channel.
A not unlikely scenario is that a wealthy collector and investor buys the "da Vinci" and then lend it to a prodigy like Chloe Chau. If she continues to develop and become one of the world's great violinist, then it is a winning formula: famous violin + famous violinist = even more famous violin.
Kudos to you guys for creating a niche channel, that actually has an impact in the traditional world of classical music!
