Honda Civic misfire diagnosis: Using clues from your customer

  • 2004 Honda Civic CEL diagnosis. Using clues from the customer helped steer us one direction. Luckily it was the right direction. A misfire on cyl 3 turned out to be a leaking head gasket. The repair was done after the video and verified a complete fix to all the symptoms. Thanks for watching!

    Well done with the diagnosis and the smoke test... I’m a 40 year veteran auto tech, Subaru trained and almost retired, now working on bmw and Suzuki motorcycles and farm quads, and that smoke test is one thing I’ve never done lol. All the best for your future and your business!

    Anyone whos watching this, you can do this exact same test with no tools: (Headgasket test)
    1. MAKE SURE CAR IS COLD (DO NOT DO THIS WITH A HOT CAR) {NEVER open a radiator when the car is hot, your eyes will be boiled out of your head..}
    2. Make sure radiator is full to the top, you can just use water for this part if you dont wanna waste coolant.
    3. With car/engine cold, remove radiator cap and leave it off
    4. Start car with radiator cap off, if water goes flying everywhere, you have a bad head gasket
    If a tiny bit of water raises and leaks out the radiator thats ok (this mostly happens from vibration of a starting engine), but if it explodes out and goes flying everywhere, you have a bad head gasket. Youll know when you see it happen ha.

    Excellent video. Using the smoke was very clever and effective for the oil leak. That cap is a common roblem on that engine.

    Good diagnostic skills. You can also use a block tester, that blue liquid and pour into a bottle that has an opening.. If the liquid turns yellow from it's original color.. you definitely have a blown head gasket.. very accurate test..

    So I replaced the ignition coil on Cylinder 4, it worked for a while then it crapped out again. But by looking at your video, I realized I was in the wrong cylinder. Cylinder 4 is on the left side of the engine not the right?

      If you are standing in front of your vehicle, cylinder 4 starts on the left. Cylinder 1 is on the right. So its 4 3 2 1 respectively.

      Numbering starts from the head of engine (where the belts are). In your case, the head is on the right side. So you are right.

    I know this is old but I have a 2003 Honda civic and the layout looks the same. I had a p0302 code and changed coil and plug on the second cylinder or at least I thought. Got codes again a month later and today the mechanic told me the cylinder you’re saying is cylinder 3 is actually cylinder 2 and put an ignition coil in and says it’s good now. I’m feeling like he screwed me. The second cylinder should be 2nd from right as i thought correct? I mean in this video you checked the 3rd which he claims is the 2nd. Idk if the 03 model is different but battery and everything look to be in the same areas.

    I have same engine, have random cylinder missfires, plugs, coils fuel is ok. What the hell is causing it to missfire?? It went to dealer they found nothing wrong, only slightly too much compression due to carbon buildup in combustion chamber/piston etc. Could that cause missfires? Also how do you clean up that carbon?

      I have same thing, nothing works (mk7 Civic) changed all coils,plugs, cleaned egr,throttlebody, idle motor, new 20mm2 ground wires,fuel pump has checked no dirt in there.
      Interesting thing is its flashes lights (all) when i 3000 rpm to engine brake or tap gas pedal (no charging light on)

    Dam I had codes p0300 p0301 p0302 but now that I look I see oil on the side like that in your video so does that mean head gasket for sure?

      no oil on the side has nothing to do with head gasket just oil leak

    Hey man my 2005 honda civic says misfire on all cylinders, i changed plugs and the ign coils still having misfire issues and no power. Especially when im at high speeds it starts chugging and when i try to speed up it takes forever to get going, any ideas bud that could help me fix this pleass? My gas mileage as took a dump as well

      Same all misfire issues. I have an 03 ex coupe, changed plugs, still misfire. Changed coil packs still, then changed fuel injectors last night and no ecu light or misfires. (Yet) Drove 47 miles no misfires. (Yet lol)

      Had the same issue as you guys fixed it last week for $20 it was the fuel filter on top of the fuel pump assembly

      live and let live there’s only one filter on the fuel pump assembly for this civic and it’s on the inside of the fuel pump. As far as I know there are no filters on top of the fuel pump

    I know its a old video but I have a issue at the moment I just can't seem to find. Start car which is a honda ep2 d16v1 I start it cold 15 degrees c any higher it doesn't do it. But under that itll misfire for about 10 seconds drops revs and fuel smell goes to stall bit doesnt. Then its fine no eml. I've cleaned all intake sensors put a fuel cleaner in. Any ideas ?

    My 2002 Honda Civic LX has Code P0303. I replaced all 4 spark plugs. Previously over the last couple of months I changed Cam Sensor, both O2 Sensors, Evap Canister, cleaned Cat Conv. I tested all coils by disconnecting them one at a time and all made the engine run rougher when disconnected. I switched #3 with #1 coil by counting right to left for the cylinder #'s. Code still shows it's #3. A month ago I did overheat momentarily and was low on COOLANT and OIL. Did I misidentify coil #3?

      You correctly identified coil #3. The cylinder numbers are from driver to passenger (closest to timing belt is #1, furthest #4). P0303 can be caused by a multitude of different things. Literally anything wrong with Air/Fuel, Spark, or Compression can cause a misfire. It sounds like you have ruled out plugs, coils, and various sensors. The D17 engines are notorious for blown head gaskets which is why a lot of people start there in the case of coolant loss with power/misfire complaints. Depending on when you are getting misfires, a leaking head gasket could be an explanation. For example, if you are only experiencing misfires on hot start-ups and it smooths out after that, coolant may be leaking into the cylinder and wetting the piston head/plug while it sits, which affects the spark and air/fuel upon start-up until the chamber is hot enough to evaporate the coolant again. If it's misfiring on cold start-ups, the head gasket may be affectively reducing compression of the cylinder until the head/block warm up enough to expand and reduce the gap... HOWEVER, that doesn't mean a leaking head gasket is your problem. It's just a strong hunch with these engines. I suggest doing a compression and leak-down test. Block testers don't always pick up a small leak of the exhaust gasses and there's always the chance that you contaminated the fluid if it's a single chamber block tester. If both of these tests come back good, move on to things like EGR command/lift readings (if you have access to that data from a scan tool), fuel pressure/injector operation, intake vacuum readings, or even making sure you have the proper valve lash (exhaust valves tend to get pretty tight on Hondas).

    Ok so when u did the smoke test I am having the same leaking issues..but what does it mean and what do I need to do.

      I'm assuming you're talking about the oil leak from the camshaft cap (around 12:04)? If that's the case, all it means is that o-ring on the cap has failed and is starting to allow oil to leak out. You can buy a replacement cap that comes with a new o-ring (They're super cheap....like $10) or you can pop out that cap, clean the cap and hole with a rag and brake clean, and apply some silicon gasket (i.e. HondaBond, Permatex "The Right Stuff", etc.) to the cap/o-ring. Super easy fix. It's really just a minor oil leak.

    Boss, being experienced to civic, I am damn sure, headgasket got leaked due to the radiator having air while coolant was replaced, civic gets pain in the ass when it comes to bleeding the radiator..

    does it damage the starter doing the compression testing when you crank it over alot

      no it wont damage the starter. it takes a few seconds to install the tool into the next cyl so the starter is never getting hot. If anything cranking the engine over for a complete compression test can kill a battery that is just barley hanging on. Some guys will put a battery charger on it for this test for that reason.
