@@Dr.Junk. i play league almost everyday the last time I've seen a tahm at all was probably 3 months ago. His kit as is rn is boring as all hell in my opinion. Many are but tahm doesn't have the flashiness and satisfaction of a rell crash down ulting or a Leo dropping R or even other top laner

Yeah devour is a toxic ability to use, but damn it feels good to use it. As a support main, I love when my teammates recognize that I saved them, or seeing the enemy team rage because I denied their play, but with some supportive abilities that is hard to see, since maybe you used a shield/heal at the exact second, but nobody saw that. Devour on the other hand literally has an animation where Tahm swallows his ally, so all eyes are on you. That's why I love wardens, standing in front of my ADC as Braum, or making my whole team shine with the power of immortality as Taric.
Wardens make supporting feel rewarding, because they get to be on the spotlight, unlike some enchanters who might make great plays, but fall on deaf ears because of how honest they are in practice.

As an enchanter main with a secret love for Tahm Kench, and occasional swaps to Braum/Taric, I totally agree. Very informed and based take.
I enjoy tanks and his character, design, lore, voice make him my favorite champion. Plus the devour mechanic on a catfish monster is perfect, tho I agree it's frustrating and unfun to play against.

since i started playing in 2016, Tahm is the champ that sold me on league for real. and he makes me smile every game i play him still.

Tahm Kench as a character is an extremely fun addition to league, and I love seeing him, I do not love playing against him, in the slightest 😂
old tahm had the same issue as soraka at one point, you couldnt burst her down because she would used W on herself, had armor, magic resist and ult still to survive, but you also couldnt try to burst someone else because she would heal them, basically leaving the enemy with two poor choices
Don't forget old soraka having a point and click mana drain ability
I had zero idea that people hated Tahm Kench. Yeah, he does a lot of damage for a tank but that definitely isn't unique to him when stuff like K'Sante and Ornn exist etc
Ksante sacrifice his own stats, big amount of stats to START DEALING dmg. Taam poke you to death with tongue wich stunning you on 2-3 sec, and heals him on 25% of his health.
difference is that they have interaction and things you can dodge, telegraphed abilties, etc. i agree they have generally more damage but that is for K'sante: in R hit everything
Ornn: hit every single brittle and Q
Tahm gets a shit ton of healing for hitting with a low mana cost high range/hitbox Q as well as guaranteed dmg mitigation, K'sante has to sacrifice a long CD to use a telegraphed ability to reduce incoming damage (W) while TK has a passive version which always works and is used automatically
@@overlordoftoxicity7710tahm is can you kite him the tank. if you sit on top of him you lose unless you are a 200 years tank buster champ or have 1 anti tank item. ksante goes from tank to skirmisher from his ult. tahm slowly kills you like a tank his is just Higher. people notice ornns damage cause he has high burst for a tank almost being able to 100 to zero over a few seconds on some champs with his full combo.

@@overlordoftoxicity7710 pre 11 and maybe pre 2 items. past that no way. at 11 his ult give his passive alone 60% increased damage and it does true damage. he also gets all the privileges of being a skirmisher while ulting so kiting him is much much much harder then the big ass fish waddling at you slowly. maybe kench does more to a squishy champ per second but kench isn't 1 shotting you unless somehow w q hearthsteel kills you. but even if he has 10khp that wouldn't kill an adc both at lvl 18. 99% sure of that maybe senna would die to it with no items for both other then hearthsteel cause sun fire wouldn't do much and even senna would 100% live with some items.
It's strange that with just swapping places with an ult and a normal ability, tahm kench went from being a tank support with a unique displacement tool to a tank vanguard with an annoying disruption unique-ish ability and then turning his Q into a poking nightmare
And yet, he's way more balanced now, both in top and support
I had no idea he was hated so much. Usually when people talk about characters they hate, it's Yuumi, Shaco, Evelyn, Teemo, etc. Yeah, his tankyness can be annoying, but Sion and Dr. Mundo and other hard to kill tanks exist. Yeah, his devour can be annoying, but it's less annoying than stealthy characters or characters with multiple dashes or characters built around healing.
I figured he was an annoying champion, not a hated champion.
To be fair, who hasn't vars made a most hated video on lol. Eventualy every champ will get their own "why everyone hates"
the trolls that played him when his ult was his w gave him a BAD rep. allies being held hostage at fountain and stuff like that.

Vars isnt even mentioning how this"lane bully" actually lanes by standing at make Q range and Qing for cs because he cant walk up to any of the current or last seasons meta.

Tahm became beyond broken the moment riot decided for some reason that "Hey! This TANK SUPPORT character should definitely get damage scaling with his MAX HP! Also here's heartseeker a very fun item"

There is also this greenish support character that has infinite range scaling that out ranges any ADC late game.
@@cat-.- Sennas intended to be damage tho, just like Pyke is intended to be an assassin, or Brand, Zyra, Velkoz and Xerath. Tahm Kench is (or i guess was at this point) a class of support that is NOT meant to deal damage, yet has scaling damage with the thing that makes him his class if that makes sense, and pretty fucking high scalings at that.

As a main support I really miss his old W. It was the best way to say to a miss positioned ADC "you are getting out of there wanting or not.
I genuinely didn't realize the frog was so hated. I play a lot of tahm and think hes tons of fun, its always funny watching traditionally strong early game champs fight me assuming I won't deal damage cuz im a tank lol.

Or trundle, jax, yone, tryndamere, darius, olaf who all get into melee range to auto you to death early game? Or riven who permastuns you and gets out before you can fight? Fun is not what the majority of toplaners is all about.
Edit: What about illaoi mrs "i land 1 e i win lane but i cant do anything but hold or splitpush because my passive is terribly designed" or yorick mr "i dont even fight you i just hit e and cage and take your tower in 1 picosecond".
And finally what about mundo and nasus? Permaslow oneshot gigatank 0 skill just scaling.

I hated when his current ult was on his w and I got trolled by kench keeping me on the bench. I absolutely hated that, but I'm completely ok with his *intended* gameplay both before and after w swapped.

Honestly call me biased but I loved old Tahm. Maybe it's because I almost exclusively play with 5stacks and because I'm half dota half league player and his ultimate reminds me of Io ultimate, but either way I loved the sheniganas you can do with him. I agree he was problematic but I genuinely think it's mainly because of the damage on his W and thick skin. E should've been the ability that was reworked, and W damage made smaller and imo he would be fine. He would still be a bit degenerate and kind of niche, but I wish league had more silly champions that require you to open your 7th eye to how you play like Bard.
Would he be crazy good if he was like that in E-Sport? Yeah probably but it's not like we don't see champions that are both broken in solo que and at high level play every other game at worlds now anyhow. If I have to make a sacrifice of seeing the same champion in pro play all the time, but for us (normal people) to have fun with him I choose the latter.

This whole video just gave me mad nostalgia for season 5 and 6. Tahm is the only champion I have ever considered my main, and I had ALL THE FUN using him back in the day when I didn't despise the game. I'm honestly so glad I more or less quit league before they massacred and turned him into the blubbery useless sack of chum he is now.

I love TK and play support, but my teammates don't know how to play around him. I don't get to play him much. Its really frustrating when you eat a teammate and then they exit early ending back up in the same fight.
Tahm is the personification of friction combat. Because of being melee, 100% single target and 100% immobile (his W has very limited combat uses), he has basically nothing but sheer brute force. Therefore, Tahm wins out on any 1v1 because that's the only thing he can do. But here's the catch: everything he does, he can only do slowly.
Tahm will outlast you eventually, but he will never kill you fast. The downside to his near invincibility in the 1v1 is the fact that this is not a 1v1 game and he may not necessarily have the time he needs to eventually outlast his opponent. More often than not the opponent will get back up before Tahm gets to that point.
I think that's an interesting dynamic. Matter of fact, I'd expect that coming from any tank, but everyone else ends up as just CC bots who can't do anything on their own and get shredded to pieces with the wealth of %health damage, true damage and armor shred present in the game nowadays.
Tahm is the only champion I can think of who can still pull the "winning by outlasting" style. I miss that friction combat coming from other champions as well.
Tahm is the least problematic champ he's covered I don't know where this is coming from.
Imo nasus is way worse and I don't think hes broken either his W is basically exhause with no cooldown. Shred and infinite stacking.

This is something I miss as well. I have no problem dealing no damage when I'm a tank, but it kinda sucks that I can't make up for that by being a sturdy frontline. While I don't get absolutely one-shot, it still feels like I melt away pretty fast unless I'm gigafed. I don't understand why Riot doesn't tune back tank damage while scaling up their tankiness a bit.
I'm saying this as a Bronze tanknivia support main though.

Huh? I tried him and I was getting 2 shot by akali. Land all the abilities, does 0 damage, instantly die. Try devour teammates, out of range. Try to get passive up, die before the third hit. The only way hes good is if the enemy feeds.

i only started playing in 2020 ive never found his devour to be much of a problem befor or after the rework im glad his power budget is in a better spot now and i hope he gets less hate overtime because his character and voicelines are really cool hes one of those characters that feels like the fantasy you are are playing a sweet talking hungry manipulator the river king its such a cool theme
I agree with most of the points here, but if having a champ that "discourages interaction" is always a bad thing then the game would be so stale because then every champ would eventually play like riven/samira, and discourages wardens as a general concept
As a former TK enthusiast, I miss being able to artificially allow my Wood Division friends to play with me using his old W. It was flat out stupid how much ridiculous shit you could negate. RIP 🙏
what if they created a downside to using devour?
for example if tahm gets hit with an ally in his mouth his ally will take a percent of that damage too, say 75 percent of the damage of the attack, so that devour isnt just a free stopwatch.
another idea is if tahm is hard cc'ed or takes a certain amount of damage while having anything in his mouth hes forced to spit it out, and if he is forced to spit out an enemy then he doesnt get the damage off, and to make sure he doesnt spit out the enemy immediatly to get guarenteed damage off, he has to "chew" his enemy, where he has to keep the enemy in his mouth for longer if he wants more damage and spitting immediately does little damage. edit: he would still be scary in top lane, but his team fight effectiveness would be lessened a bit
He's already a single target only attacker with a slow rate of doing damage, I don't think nerfing his worst aspect(teamfighting) is going to change anything
I get why they had to make devour an ult, but man it was so fun being tahm support with it on W, making it change to R just feels so wrong to me and kinda ruined the feel, even if it didnt do much overall
As a support main this is why i decided to play TK. Having a teammate get caught out and being unable to do anything sucks. Being able to save literally anybody from any and everything as long as I'm close enough to them is sooooo satisfying. Add on the fact that he is a straight up monster in early level scraps and is surprisingly hard to kill and he becomes a lot of fun to play.
Most enemy sups I play against (silver) are enchanters though and poke the crap out of me so that part is rough.
His devour melee range, how tf do you even use it when everybody is flashing around and his only mobility takes 3 years to go off. He feels completely unusable. Going back to zack.

As an old tahm main, I loved his old kit, always going top and rushing frozen mallet was such a fun time, (all chat always turned on for extra spice) , still love that champ although can't help but feel a sense of sadness every time I pick him up these days.

This, the catfish is instant comedy every time he shows up in a game, whether he's soloing the 7/0 rengar as a support kench or diving the adc through two turrets and three ultimates as a toplaner he's consistently an entertaining presence.
The extra damage he has on his passive now used to be on the ult passive, so he did not have as much damage in his AA before 6.
9:09, The way I play Tahm seems very useful for late game. I usually play with my brother and I think he is very good at playing with a lead and carrying games so our strategy is that he will gank for me top as much as he can while I let the enemy top perma push and I just let him get all the kills. My brother can then snowball and 1v9 from this and I play late game kinda like a pocket sage(but Tahm Kench). In team fights I use my W to engage for him and I make sure to stay near him at all times so if he is about to die I can ult him. So far I have a 80% win rate out of 10 games with this strategy so I feel like it’s pretty good. But maybe it’s just low elo I dont know.

Oh god this video reminded me of me and my friends' 'kidnap' comp when devour didn't ground TK. We go TK supp, Kalista, and Skarner jg. Skarner would engage with TK as follow up using Righteous Glory, with enough CC TK can devour 1 enemy and then Kalista pulls TK back and throws him under tower or towards allies. Enemy support can't do anything lmao. We also ran Shaco support, Teemo support, Trynd support with max W to make enemy ADC miss cannon (AP build to be pseudo front line), Panth support (back when Q was point and click), and some other bullshit comps that you can't run on ranked.
Yeah, I played against a Tahm Kench mid as Fizz recently. He wasn't very... good... so I stomped him in lane despite being new to Fizz, but I couldn't burst anyone by midgame because he'd just remove them from the game.

When Tahm Kench first came out, the Q didn’t use up the passive and Devour is W, and I guess I was one of the first To bring him to Top in my region, dominating every time
I think one of the biggest tipping points that skewed opinions on Kench was patch 6.13 when they moved his damage bonus from max health from his ult to his passive. He wasn't nearly the lane bully to begin with since you didn't get the damage scaling until you hit level 6. As much as I loved the change as someone who played a TON of top lane Kench back then, it took him from being a really solid counterpick option into some of the popular picks at the time into an absolute lane bully against far too many champs. Not to mention how abusive he became as a support on top of it all.
This is less of a why everyone hates and more of a rework retrospective 😂. I feel like Vaars just kept bringing up his old stats

As an ARAM (mostly tank) player, it's hard to hate a champ that can be completely countered by items. I don't hate Kench, but I'll always hate my teammates that refuse to purchase a Serpent's Fang or any GW against him.
I hope one day there's an item that's both anti-heal & anti-shield
I think one of the biggest issues with current tahm devour is that they essentially made it purely only for eating enemies the cd just isnt worth eating allies
I mean... I am not a professional in League, but most of the time I won't let my teammates give 300 (or more) gold to the enemy so they can be absent for a 33% of the R's cooldown.
When the enemy throws a ton of abilities at an ally only for me to whisk them to safety moments before those abilities land is super powerful in turning teamfights. Especially against champs with resets or ones that get stronger off kills.
There is difference between people who plays LOL to win and people who plays it to enjoy its champions
I used to play old Tahm kench top a lot. The idea that devouring his ally would be so frustrating for enemies never accoured to me. Typically devouring an ally meant i didnt have my main ability to use for enemies while also being extremally immobile which meant i cant get my devoured ally to safety. Devouring an ally also meant the person didnt participate in a fight so it usually meant just delaying their death - not saving anybody as the video proposes. Devouring allies was not foolproof neither (4:43) as the ally could escape devour early and chose the direction which not knowing the mechanic usually resoulted in them being spit back into enemy team. Thic skin was similar - while it increases Tahm survivability massively it usually just delayed his death as he couldnt escape any situation. What was frustrating about the champion was something entirely diffrent - the insane amount of single target cc Tahm Kench had being able to stun people with his Q over and over just to W them and repeat the whole proces again. Not being able to play is a very frustrating experience. At the same time being so single target focused made Tahm very hard to do anything later in the game in any teamfight so it felt as tho he was a weak champion. As for support role Tahm Kench was basically a hard counter to many melee supports - he was immobile and couldnt engage at all but if the enemy walked up to him he pretty much auto won the fight - especially given his W which didnt scale at all (scaled with ap) and had massive %hp obliterating enemy tank supports.
As a sidenote it is funny that you showed Garen vs Tahm toplane. Garen E works while devoured which is very frustrating for Tahm and very funny to look at as Garen spins cutting Tahm Kench from the inside.
man, I had so much fun with pre-rework tham and malzahar. You could just spit the minion with the malzahar E on it into someones face and instantly transfer that DoT to them.
one of my favorite offensive uses of Devour came when I ate a Zilean who had ulted himself. His ult expired while sitting in my tummy and when I spit him out he died :D
Did I miss it? I waited the part where I believed why they swapped W and R, cause Devour was used to grief allies, like 1~2 weeks after the height of the outrage, they swaped W & R.
idk just a shot in the dark but why not make Devour bit more of a risk like shen ult where people he eats take a portion of the damage dealt to Tahm like if he is a pinata and it just becomes damage reduction instead? Just keep the part where he give allies a shield when he spits them out so it is more of an engage tool rather than just a free save all the time? also would be funny if he eats an enemy only for their entire team to murder him and their own ally in his stomach!
Honestly I can understand why they swapped his W & R but they should have buffed his devour back up to do decent damage because it's an ulti now, his devour damage was so high before because it wasn't easy to just casually use it, people knew they could just walk away & dodge his relatively easy to predict Q due to it's wind up animation to stop him using it
All the points that you mentioned are actually the points why I love Tahm. He's actually my second favorite champion after Bard.
He's not exactly useless you just have to know how to use him effectively. That's what separates good Tahm players from ok Tahm players.
Though Bard is still more impactful than Tahm, since Bard can alter a whole teamfight (for better or worst). On the other hand, Tahm usually alters a skirmish or pick.
I can understand why people used to hate him, but he really isn’t that bad nowadays, he may be a lane bully because of his simplistic design, but it also makes him easy to read and outplay. Also his R may be annoying, but it isn’t any worse in my opinion to malzahar, malphite or fiora R.
Idk, I find him pretty useful when playing with him. W is an aoe knockup, getting a pretty hard engage. Q with 3 stacks is a stun, so that's another CC, otherwise it slows and it also heals him. And otherwise he is a pretty high damage dealing, beefy tank. Especially with Heartsteel and Grasp, his passive just scales infinitely. And of course his ult is a very versitile tool. From saving a champion, to catching a high priority enemy target, to removing a dangerous enemy who got to the backline, to engaging with W with another frontliner.

Old Tahm had a better design for support gameplay. also, Vars I agree with a lot of your video choices, but as a Tahm main I don't see people getting that mad when I'm playing Tahm. I usually get the exact opposite from my team and the other. I think Tahm is generally loved by the community.
as an ARAM main, i noticed tahm is one of the more appreciated champs among his teammates. sure, no one likes playing against him, but whenever i see him he consistently gets high honors. maybe people just love playing with a good tahm?
The only memories kenches in my games are happy ones if him saving me from danger with his ult. Those moments really stand out

I suggest a video on Zed. No matter new champions, Zed is always my permaban. The “melee” assassin that pokes me from a screen away and wastes no resources doing so just feels like smashing my head on a cactus.
I genuinely believe he was more fun to play against and as when he was pre-rework. I don’t understand why people disliked his old W so much when it was literally just a displacement ability, and people used it to shoot minions more than that.
Idk. Maybe the 32% max HP magic damage that was paired with it? On a 10 second cooldown?
Or perhaps being able to remove your teammate from the whole map, rendering them untouchable every 10 seconds was not fun to go against?

how about the aspect of trolling with tahm? wasn't he hated for it too back in a day where he was able to devour an ally and just put it to the enemy hands. and I think it was just before the movement speed updates on his W.
i remember that bot game i played once. team had a premade anivia and tahm. that was not a fun game
I get old Tahm being hated but I kinda love new Tahm. I find him not entirely fun to play against but a blast to play as and I don't mind having him on my team ever.
I think only high elo players hated Tahm. In low elo everyone loved him because you got to save poorly positioned ADC's and banter with the opposing bot lane.
Honestly I think the better way they could have gone with it is just decrease how long allies can be held for to a really short amount of time.

Tahm was the first champion I devoted enough time to get Mastery 7 on, and I don't think I ever got flamed for the pick. As long as you weren't trolling by ferrying people into the enemy fountain, every carry in solo q was super happy for that get out of fail free card.

Tahn kench saved me from quitting league. I started playing league at 2018 with my friends and I didn't enjoy this game at all, mainly because I was very bad and almost every game I went 0 5 at best. I decided to quit and before quitting I wanted to pick a troll champ and troll my team a few games and maybe get myself banned. So I asked my friend what is the most troll champion in league and they told me that it's tahm kench because he can take his teammate to enemy fountain with hid ult. So I picked him and in the very first game I stomped my enemy laner, he went 0 8 and then rage quit. In the next game this continued, every game I was hard winning top and because of that I decided not to quit and played tahm kench only for the next 2 years. Noone was playing him at that time and they didn't know how strong he is in top lane, so it was easy to carry with him. Now I dont play him because I dont like his rework but he is still my most favorite champ in the game
i guess he's the opposite of taric where he's too strong early and devour bot late, taric at least scales decently with his healing, shielding and cc and an ult that you would normally not use at all
Stopwatch should never be removed from the game. If it wasn't there, there would literally be no counterplay to the likes of Kayn, Nocturne, etc.
My opinion. 2 sec slow on his Q, which has a 100% AP Scaling and uses his Passiv to get even more. And it even has double %HP scaling because of using Passiv.
With his E, he becomes a Ornn with way more Damage. Imagine Ornn W but permanent.
I just started playing LoL again and faced him for the first time top lane as Teemo. The second he hit 6 he would just ult engage me and all in over and over and he took no damage. I had first blood on him too and it didn't matter. Couldn't even get close enough to the minion wave to throw a mushroom to clear it without him clicking R, running through like 3 of my mushrooms and still winning. Crazy top lane champ right now for sure.
How would he even get his passive up? Q 3 times in 5 seconds?
@@s133p3r0 He comes up under you, knocks you up if you don't have a dash ability to get out from it, 2 auto attacks, then hits you with his tongue, then devours you. As Teemo, you can't do anything because he gets the 2 free auto attacks before you can blind him because of the knock up. Kind of wild. Once he hits 6, you can't even get close enough to throw shrooms to clear the waves. You either have to sit under tower, or you need to go somewhere else. Asking for jungle ganks doesn't work either because he can use his massive shield to survive long enough for his ult to come back off of cooldown to escape. He just shuts down the lane completely.
I know a lot of Tahm mains still whine about the devour being relegated to an ultimate, along the rest of their changes; However their initial release was objectively a really unhealthy design, no matter how fun was for the Kench abuser. Is a bit weird having to use it as basically a meat shield, but I think it's better than having to spam the devour to both allies and enemies.
You know who could use a similar rework? Yone. Having an E that´s an instant lifesaver, that also displaces your hitbox on cast (which allows you to also dodge certain abilities) that gives a MS buff, a true damage acumulating buff that has the potential to be an execute, that also gives you inmunity to cc, is a bit broken for a basic ability. Why not rework the Ult and tone it down a lot, or even change it into something else (since to be honest, the only reason it exists as is, is so it has synergy with Yasuo's one, even tho you would rarely see both in a single match and team) and swap Ult and E.
I don't mind if it then gets it's duration and explosion damage buffed, cuz at least it would make sense to have all the sh*t it has, but I think it would really help the health of the game itself. Algo the magic/physical split he has on his W and autos, along with other things,but hey, baby steps.

I don't play top lane very often, but when i do, outside of very specific champions, i always ban him. I played like three games against him back to back at one point and decided that it was never gonna happen again. Regardless of how good or bad he is in the current meta. But its only top lane that i do this in because i know he isnt very popular
onces you play him a bit you notice his issues and it gets hard to hate him like hating pantheon. i hated him but after m7ing him for a challenge i gave myself, i got it beaten into me that yes might not die some games but you aint killing jack shit unless the enemies goes back to the bronze age and fighta you in melee range for 30 seconds without killing you first. also just LDR and botrk make him unplayable into an adc with any peel or can kinda kite. so as annoying as laning is i learned his lane bully statis and hes meh now. as long as you don't int inti him early and avoid your minions hes manageable. better then illoai by a mile cause you have the wave for safty and he can't wave clear very well. unlike her who 1 shots it then e's and does a third if you hp every e even running out if range and which gives up exp and cd lets her hit tower for free.

As a Tahm main, I say how can one hate such a eloquent lad. His gameplay ain't bad it's just that, much like in lore, players have a bad habbit of thinking they're better than the River King. I dare say one could easily warm up to Kench if they gave it a go.
