  • A video exploring the differences between wood and bone auloi, using replicas of the Posedonia aulos based off of the measurements of Stelios Psaroudakis (The aulos of Poseidōnia 2014).
    Instruments made by Max Brumberg
The recording was made with a ZoomH5 recorder. No mastering of the recording, both recordings were made with the same settings.

Both sound great, but I must say I prefer the bone. When you switched to the bone one I could feel the music pierce my heart. Well played!

I almost prefer the warmth of the wood, but the bone is just so full sounding. I'd be curious to hear how the cane compares as well. Also very curious about those shipwreck finds, would love to read about them

I do like the warmth of the wooden ones but the bone ones sounds like they have a more complex sound. More overtones, I guess, as Max said.
I would also be very interested in hearing the ones made from cane.
I also saw a video a while ago with someone playing Aulos made out of silver?

both pleasant to hear (congratulations :-) ) the wooden one is indeed "warmer" but it also has homogeneity, which the bone seems to lack (through the video; maybe the real thing sounds more balanced qua overtones of the various notes). The playing is on another level, but this we knew already :-) Accordingly the master builder of the instruments.
