I once did a short film, that took 5 years to finish. It was never going to be something that would spawn a career (I dreamed, but not seriously). However, I still look back on it with pride, that I made a finished thing, and it will always exist. I think going into projects with the idea that you will just create 'something', and that your skills will grow as you create, is a good place to start.

Honestly some people should "quit." What I mean is quit trying to make it a career and instead keep it as a hobby. Having a decent job with art as a hobby is better than being a perpetual starving artist. Eventually you want to grow up, have a family, and have a life. And just have good mental health.
And honestly there's so many free and affordable resources online that it doesn't make sense to go into debt just to become an artist.

    • @sydneyharp1989

@@AhmadPhilips you could also say this about any entrepreneur, most people don’t have the strength to fail and try again. People do fail at their first business not to be unrealistic. Financially it can definitely break someone so I understand what you mean but I think it breaks you mentally first if it’s meant to be a hobby. If you would never feel comfortable working irregularly or with differences from month to month it makes sense not to do it as a job because even in times of stability you won’t be happy. But fearing the unknown is normal especially with the future so just because you feel unsure at times doesn’t mean you are 100% wrong.

I did a fully animated 9 minute cartoon. It took me 8 months to finish. The goal was to get a job from it. It didn't happen and I was pretty depressed about it, but it led to a comic series and now a published graphic novel. Over the years I changed my mindset, much like what's stated in the video.
Honestly the first thing I realized is rather than spend nearly a year making an animated short I would rather spend that same time and have a published comic or graphic novel that I can sell.
EDIT: The graphic novel is called "Hani and Huda" it's a comic for like 7 to 10 year olds, so I doubt it's anything anyone here would be interested in. Just letting y'all know since so many asked.

The mistake of making things such as animation with the expectation of getting the opportunities I so dearly wanted really hit me. One of the big reasons I spent so much time doing animation in my free time was to get into a good animation school. And when I didn't make the cut, I was heartbroken. I felt like I wasted all that time, and I completely lost direction. The hardest thing for me to learn was to make things more so for myself and enjoy the progress I was making as an artist.

I make games, personally I get a huge sense of personal creative satisfaction from making the things I thought of in my head and seeing them play out *exactly* how I dreamt it up on screen, interacting with the thing I made and having it work just right, its an incredible experience, as is seeing someone else play your game and have a blast too, its an almost drug like high. I finally finished a level I'd been working on for months and I got a tear in my eye, the overwhelming feeling of seeing a dream realized is enough of a goal to keep me going, anything I get on top of that is lovely but I'm not exactly looking for anything else in return, creative fulfillment is something we all want (I presume)

    • @buffnipz

I find a similar passion for the process, except instead of seeing things play out exactly as I pictured in my head, I usually have a very rough idea of a story I want to express and the challenge and excitement during the process is when I realize my ideas won't work and I have to find some solution. Maybe it's just different for video games compared to making videos but I don't think I ever have a full idea, it's usually found somewhere along the way

But now so many years later I'm trying to take it up again. I can feel the anxiety of wanting to erase anything I make as I'm making it, but the more I ignore it and keep going the more the anxiety lessens and the more I find myself enjoying it. Pressure can ruin so many things, if you find it's destroying something you love, do whatever you have to do to stop it ruining your passion. Create for the love of it, and for your own joy. Even if you think you're creating garbage... Its YOUR garbage, and you enjoyed making it.

It's all about balancing intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Are you doing it because you enjoy it and you actually want to do it, or are you doing it because you think you'll get something out of it? It's good when you have both, but it's also good to understand that what you "get out of it" is something that changes from day to day, and you can never really rely on those external rewards, especially those as uncertain as "this will get me a job," or "this will make me popular." Well I must say, you released this in a shockingly timely manner as far as I'm concerned. I happen to have a short film to be releasing for the film festival circuit in a couple weeks and it's the most ambitious project of my career. I've never invested more time, skill and money into anything before. And yeah, I have high hopes for it and I hope it gets the recognition I feel it deserves, but honestly? Even if nobody sees it and nobody celebrates it, I'm just glad it exists. I'm glad it's not one of many story ideas that will die with me.
You talk in this video about not getting too caught up in expectations for how you want your career to go and to open up to opportunities you may not have considered before, and this philosophy has actually helped me make this film. A long time ago I didn't get on a show I really wanted to work on and it hurt because it made me feel like I wasn't good enough, and instead I went on a long path of making due with other opportunities like animating in flash, doing shadow work and retakes and builds. But the film I'm working on now involves character rigging and a lot of comp work I learned along the way. I now realize that if I didn't go on that path, I would never have acquired the skills necessary to make this film.
the fact that ANY film exists at all is a miracle, because making one is HARD. you have to be so cinematically literate and you have to work well on a big team and you have to be so good at selling your concept just to get anywhere, and even after all that you also have to be insanely lucky to get the opportunity. So I guess be thankful that you even got to make something, because so many in the world don't even get THAT far.

I go with Sanderson's tip when he talks about Magic System in my approach, he says instead of going wider with your magic go deeper with your magic. I have had this as my approach with all my personal projects, and it bares fruit, but obviously life doesn't give the stability or time to crack on like that, so I am no longer in a hurry for 'breaking in' with my big short. I do think if I focused instead of a short animation film that was bigger than 2 minutes, a lot bigger - and just did many 30 second ones that could even be woven into a bigger one probably be a better approach, but you can't reverse time, and it is tricky to make something that breaks in instantly, a lot of successful creatives when you look at the career you see that unless lucky and get the right person that backs them/you and opportunity many of them had a long period of doing and completing things then finally get the shot.

Over the past 4 years of snowballing animation passion projects whilst studying non-art subjects and trying to push it to the next level but repeatedly not achieve what i wanted to - because i had set the dream too high - had me growing less ambitious and tired. Being able to recognise that failure isn't defined by the fixation of a single goal, but rather to be able to see the benefit and growth in a spectrum of goals, is something I definitely needed.

I have had this concept on my mind for a while, but it is good to see it layed out visually (by you), as it helps me put the big picture into perspective. Lately, I haven't had many major goals for my projects beyond just having a good time and trying something new. Part of my own mental well being has been learning to accept that about myself, because I feel like modern society encourages us to have lofty pie in the sky goals, and shuns people as "lazy" for doing things out of amusement and self indulgence, even if it isn't hurting anybody. So in the past I felt like I needed to work harder to meet lofty goals because my work was meaningless if I did not, even though that it entirely the opposite of how my creative process works! It's like a paradox that makes the creative individual shoot themself in the foot. It really isn't worth it. I LOVE creating things, and if a negative mindset is taking that away from me, it isn't worth it! I have one thing that really makes me feel happy in life, then why trade it away for any delusion or nonsense ideological construction meant to make me feel bad? That's the real waste.

  • @JH-pe3ro
    @JH-pe3ro Před rokem +6

I find that the only thing that works for me to reach any long-term goal is to remind myself: what idea am I studying right now? Am I studying it effectively?
It does not matter if the idea is "good". The idea can be proven good or proven bad, but the proving is done by the studying and honestly answering the question. When we hide from that part of ourselves, our goals turn towards credit-seeking behavior and "presenting" success; or alternately, we go in with the goal of seeking credit and looking for easy wins; in both cases, it leads towards adding more scope than necessary: "If I add more, it'll be better" is the death of so many creative projects. Attacking the idea itself speeds everything up. Whether it succeeds or fails, you can document it like a piece of research: here is the idea, here is what I learned when I tried it. That can be incredibly valuable information to most lines of work.

So now I usually have two products on the go. I no longer call them projects. I call them PRODUCTS. I am creating a brand. What is the DNA of my brand? I am also a cartoonist. So now I am taking my screenplays and turning them into Webtoons. Self publishing like my role model, Beatrix Potter who took so many rejections she had to self publish. She is still in print 120 years later.

I am terrible with communication and community, and that's exactly what I must work on, I have to connect.
So far, my goals are extremely humble, because I know I am not a good animator, have no connections and am pretty much inapt in everything 😅
So, from video to video, I get even more motivated, because I manage to meet my small expectations, and they slowly increase according to performance on the field.

Personally ive felt like ive wasted time *not* working on personal projects. Mostly because in recent times I havnt had any other responsibilities... I know im fortunate to *be able to* do this, but... I feel like a leech since I dont have a job and really should at this point. But it does give me more free time, I just feel guilty for not using it for really much of anything productive.
3:50 alright it'll go on my portfolio, thats a 100% certainty. Ill have learned unity (im into game development, thats what my passion is and im learning unity) and well. yeah thats about it.
5:45 that's one I think I need to to more. All too often I just buy things just because I have the money, but I should probably put those behind me finishing a personal project so that I dont feel guilty about spending money, I feel like I have actually done something and then whatever I get can be a reminder of that accomplishment... Which I like sentimental value on items, thats one of the main reasons I get certain things.

    • @aiiiia9971
      @aiiiia9971 Před rokem +1

I relate with that first bit because last year I definitely was creating still, but I would feel guilty about not accomplishing anything out of it, because I didn't have a job and I was "wasting my time" and "leeching", or that's how I felt. Even though money wasn't an immediate concern I figured I should at least have a place in society. So I got a job, just a random low wage job at a deli. I work as much as I am required to, but not more than I can. I don't have aspirations to be manager or anything. I just do it to have something to do and get out of the house.
And when I come home, I work on my projects. At the moment the arrangement is working fine. I can't say I am any less or more productive with my personal projects, since having less free time ironically makes me want to create even more during my free time. However it saps me of the energy to do anything unnecessary or that I don't enjoy for the sake of enjoying it.
      So far, the arrangement works.

I do also use projects at the moment to break my skill, like something never done before, and it does work in growing me but can lead to messy projects that maybe too rough to get through into a studio but I myself have improved. When we are younger we put eggs all into one short, think we can get that one hit which breaks us through the glass and land us into the world, an announcement, when in reality that usually only happens from luck and know the right person that also connect with an opportunity. What frequently happens is many started and completed projects over a timespan and then finally something opens up, you see some creatives or authors and ten years of just active in the sector, failure after failure but eventually brings about a reputation like scriptwriters that never get credit but circulation in a sector that eventually something comes along, and they get it. It is less put forward that a lot of luck is needed over capabilities but also just making things will eventually build a reputation that opens an opportunity instead of one big egg that gets you all you want.

I'd like to offer a slightly different take. No matter what I do (personal project or studio project), I try to stay connected to that 10 year old version of myself that liked to sit and draw doodles in front of the Saturday morning cartoons. I try to remember why I got into this field in the first place. I try to remember the joy of just creating. That joy of creating HAS to be the reward. In other words, it's the act of creating that should be what keeps us going, not the final product. Artists are born. They have no choice but to make things their whole lives. Unfortunately at times we get side tracked when we are searching for recognition- that will inevitably lead to some disappointment no matter what you do.

Your whole "things I expect will happen when I finish" makes me think of my days in college. I stupidly assumed that so long as I graduated with a good GPA, I'd be able to find work easily enough (and the college would help me find work as well). That was not at all what happened. I basically was a contractor for 2 years doing really simple/tedious work and barely making any money (and no job benefits either). Meanwhile, other people I went to college with who didn't care so much about maintaining a good GPA wound up getting full time work at the same company I was a contractor at. That combined with me not being able to get hired full time at all the places I kept applying at made those 2 years some of the most depressing of my life. I was able to eventually get full time work, but really only because someone I went to college with recommended me for the position. And while my team leader at work has assured me that I've very much earned my position, I still have this persistent thought in the back of my head that I'm not qualified for this job I'm in.
Anyway, best of luck with your future endeavors.

This is a very valuable conversation, I appreciate & respect it. However, everyone will always have different outcome though, despite all of these making sense, but sometimes they're still not guaranteed as well, in my personal opinion & experience.
I feel like in this day and age, new generation of animators nowadays would only do animation studies / practices, put them out there on the internet, and they’d get opportunities here and there already, thanks to the Internet and the benefit of getting viral on the internet. Sometimes there are smart Human Resources / recruiters who understands well when animators has good fundamentals in their work, and they’d be confident to recruit them at first glimpse.
I’ve never done personal project, I even dropped out from animation school, I'm a pure self-taught person, but I can understand the sentiments of being frustrated & angry to self for wasting that much of time, effort & energy that ends up resulting nothing from it. Yet, here I’ am getting opportunities and lots of open doors because of my short animation studies / practices on social media; I end up working for Riot, and I have never apply to studios before, even to Riot. But people recognize, recommended, and hire me because of my dumb animations that somehow and sometime went viral.
Sometimes expecting nothing from things can be a pleasant experience as long we commit, believe and put our heart into our craft. But also, I feel like making personal project will only give ourselves an unhealthy amount of “expectation”, but its all depend on personal preferences after all, and how we navigate stuff if we want to survive in the industry. I do feel bad when animator so eager to finish their personal short films, and it end up drowning in obscurity. I think it's okay to follow the trend why is there so much internet animators that can be successful to find jobs at fast pace. That being said, at the end of the day we still NEED to always adapt to our ever changing world & reality.

For the longest time I wanted to get into the game dev industry as a programmer, but when I learned about the dark side of the industry, I'd rather make my own indie game over joining a studio.
Also, very often in so called "creative industries" people don't get to express THEIR creativity - they implement someone else's. There can be only so many lead artists and game designers at 1 project, but those 200 swords and 300 types of monetization gems won't draw themselves.

I made a personal animation project 2 years ago, which took 2 years to finish. It was only 2 minutes long. I fell in and out of it because I look at my work and often don't think it looks as good as any typical animation you'd find here on youtube because I never worked with complete programs and techniques beyond just drawing things by hand. I prefer the frame by frame style. I would have moments where I felt like I was doing really good. And moments where I questioned my abilities. Normally I would have finished it in 1-3 months but I would only work on it for like 2 days in hapazard sessions, then not touch it for 6+ months. All because I try hard to reach a goal then be hard on myself when I don't reach it. I don't really do it for opportunities. I just want to make something people like but sometimes it sucks to not meet the expectation or deadlines you set, so it feels like people fall out or move on and it's not worth animating anymore

For me, that either means trying a composition technique, mixing methods, and whatever strategies for tackling whatever obstacles. Even outside of that, it can be video editing tricks, timing, visual composition, etc etc etc. If you can embrace any opportunity as a new learning opportunity, you typically can't go wrong.

I used to think this was a flaw, but maybe I might just be cut out for animation. I’ve been drawing realistically for years, but at the moment have grown fond of a bouncier and big eyed cutesy anthro art style. worked on a (really bad) comic for about 5 years, and actually wanted to have a story going on its 2nd year. I really had nobody reading but that really didn't stop me from dishing out a comic or 2 each day. Thought it would be easy to make a story, but on the road I realized its quite hard to end one, like from from start, it gives ideas and how it can go, but when it gets more and more onto the story, its kind of hard to get to an ending with all this new stuff. People got lost when the story was continuing, which I did little refreshers or such, but that honestly feel like bad story design, and got myself to doughs myself. Thought about quitting earlier on a mid story only to cut it with a bad ending, and honestly If I could, I would go back and make it right. I'm not gunna say the name of the comic because of the "humor" n stuff being... questionable nowadays, could offend lots or such, but ey. Working on a goal is hard, and I get it sometimes, its hard to go on the road continuing something ya think that wouldn't end until the wall comes closer, but gotta realize something, your work is not you, your work is made by you or something by McCranie, has a good book about starting artists and somewhat helped me after quitting only trying to get back what stopped
