KUSHTIA, BANGLADESH - During our trip to Kushtia we spent an entire day home cooking… and it was one of the greatest food days of our trip to Bangladesh. Not only in Bangladesh, but all around the world, the greatest food experiences are often home cooking. Today we’re cooking an all out Bangladeshi fish feast from morning to night!
When you think about Bangladeshi food, you might think about the rich goat and beef dishes, but really, the most common of all foods that’s consumed daily is fish and rice. Bangladesh is blessed with an abundance of river, and seas, and fish is common around the country. So today, we’re focusing the entire day on eating Bangladeshi fish dish specialties. In the morning we had day old fermented rice with ilish, the national fish of Bangladesh. Then we went to the Kushtia market and especially headed to the fish market section to buy a variety of different fish to cook for lunch and dinner.
Aunty is such an amazing cook, she’s the person you want to be cooking for you when you’re in Kushtia! I loved how she’s so natural at cooking, from the look in her eyes you can tell that she enjoys cooking and the joy it brings to others.
One of my favorite dishes of the entire trip, in all of Bangladesh, is ilish fish cooked with fresh mustard paste and mustard oil. It’s like mustard on top of mustard and the pungent flavor is so incredibly tasty when smashed into rice.
Another incredibly special day of Bangladeshi food in Bangladesh. Thank you to Rasif’s family for the incredibly warm hospitality and delicious food!

Wow I’m really amazed by the variety of foods that are available in Bangladesh. It seems like they have special dishes with anything a person can possibly eat. I’ve never seen such a diverse cuisine ever in my life. The people also seem to be really nice and hospitable. I hope I will enjoy my trip there later this year ❤️🇺🇸🇧🇩❤️
Come to BD and explore
Thanks. Also if possible if you ever try Indian or Pakistani or Bangladeshi food then please don't use fork, use finger instead. Believe me, your finger will pass signal to your brain and you will find it way better experience than using knife and fork.
Even if you're vegetarian you'll get the best veggies here.. rich flavor.. this land total south asia is homeland of thousands of spices, so we know how to make a food taste rich..

Hello Catherine. Thanks for saying that .I am originally from Bangladesh. I lived in London for many years now in Texas , been to many restaurants but never find this amazing taste of foods 😔
I toured Bangladesh for a couple of months 2019/20. It was the best culinary trip I ever had - delish, colourful, inexpensive & prepared by the friendliest people on earth.
Thanks for your nice words. Pls come again with friends and family. Love from 🇧🇩

So cool to hear that John, glad you loved Bangladesh and its incredible food and people!
I have cancer and these videos keep my mind working. I can't eat any of this right now but through the mercy of Allah Azawujaal I will heal. My biggest food destinations in the Sub Continent are Pakistan, Bangladesh and Kerela. By His mercy I will hopefully visit these locations and dwell in the beautiful cuisines they have to offer InshAllah.😢
Inshallah you will heal soon and you are most welcome to Bangladesh ❤❤🇧🇩
You will beat that cancer brother best wishes

Bengal was probably the richest state when the British took over. These river fish dishes go way back to ancient times. Magnificent stuff, Mark.
Yes bengal was the richest even during mughal and Nawab era.. the culture itself is very rich.. most of the poets in India are bengalis.. even the singers are bengalis..
Yeah, there are many countries which are richest in this era. They have become richest taking our wealth like uk. But, the wealth we have beneath our soil. If we can get out this wealth, we would be next uk.
Yes , That's why Mughal Emperor named our Bengal "Jannatabad" (Paradise of earth)@@sakuraharuno4667

I can honestly say that Bangladesh has some of the best food in the world. The flavours are out of the world. The vegetables and spices are so rich because the soil is the most fertile in the world. The food is literally grown from the sediments deposited from the Himalayas. You can't beat that. And some of the fruits and spices can not be found anywhere else.
So True
Yes💯

Great way to put it, ultimate fertile soil makes for outstanding recipes and dishes!

Well Bangladesh & India were once one country and as an American there are many South Asians from the Indian sub continent and you can’t always tell them apart, they’re cultures are almost identical but with subtle differences due to regions, states and religion but that’s just my opinion.
Thanku 😘
Mark has only scratched the surface of Bengali Cuisine, Bangladesh’s unique river system hosts 1000’s of types of fish and crustaceans, paired with the numerous types of vegetables available there are literally 10’000’s of dishes which can be made.
These differ depending on the areas you visit and seasonal availability.
Not to mention the different chicken, mutton, goat and beef dishes…
👍👍👍
I have a long term illness I've had since I was 16 that prevents me from travelling, so I watch videos like this one for the experience. Mark is my favourite because he makes you feel like your right there with him seeing and smelling everything, you can see how good things taste from his face. I live in a tiny town in the UK an sadly there aren't any places to try different styles of food here so I can't try for myself but mark makes u feel like you know what it would taste and smell like while he eats..
Much love Mark an family 😊
@ Donna b . Just somehow buy the plane ticket and I will push your wheelchair if necessary and take you out to taste our food and culture as much as possible. Hope you get well soon
ask local curry houses to sell or give you their own food they make for themself. 90% of the Indian curry houses are owned by Bangladeshis. English Scottish love to eat in Indian restaurannts,
To all the people saying he should go to this district or that..absolutely right. Bangladesh is an outstanding food hub for any food bloggers...Mark Wiens is the best among them...His host has taken a smart approach of taking Mark to his known places for this time around and giving Mark the full exposure of what he (the host) knows well. Mark was in Bangladesh before Ramadan and for a few days. That is why they were quite selective. I think we have open a door for Mark to come again to Bangladesh for few more times to experience our amazing country. Because our food varies not only from district to district but from season to season also. This is a good start for Mark and hope to see him many more times in our hospitable country. I think this is only the beginning for Mark in Bangladesh.
I have not seen any better comment than this.

There are quite some dissimialrities from the food of Indian Bengalis and Bangladeshi Bengalis. For example most of your dishes are vegetarian based. Whereas our cuisine is more meat and fish based. So it’s safer to term our cuisine as, Bangladeshi cuisine instead of Bengali cuisine.
@@antaraanikapiya thats a misconception. We eat a variety of fishes and meat. The ghoti people may eat some fish that bangals don't or vice versa and in mixed families they have a knowledge of both. the cooking masalas and techniques may be different to suit our pallate but its no way veg based lol

A couple of interesting facts about the rivers & fishes of Bangladesh:
There are 700+ rivers in Bangladesh, the most in any country. if you go to google map and watch a satellite view you'll see that the river system of Bangladesh is like a very intricate vein-like pattern on the earth. Bangladesh itself is also the biggest natural delta in the world, resulting in great biodiversity for freshwater fishes. Because of that, 90% of the fish Bangladeshi people consume are freshwater fish. In terms of preparing fish, we mostly cut fish into steaks rather than doing fillet or butterfly like in the west. Also "boneless fish dishes" are very rare in Bangladesh because we specialize in eating fish with bones and everything :P
nice vid as always.
Thank you very much for these insights Sabbir
Nicely explained...
100% agreed. But we also do fish bharta, in different ways, but these are painstakingly deboned by the preparer. Mark there is also Ilish bharta, and Ilish pulao. Ilish truly is the signature fish of Bangladesh.

The food
The culture
Wow😊
Thank you 💖
I live in Assam, Northeast India and these fish dishes are just like how we cook them maybe our ancestors borrowed the dishes from them , but i was in awe as the recipes and food habits are exactly the same. Even with Bengalis in India there can be slight differences but with Bangladesh its the same so nice to see. I was drooling at the Elish maach , its my favourite 😋😋😋
Hi Mark! Wow you really manage to find some interesting and unique food paradises!
It all looks really good!
This one probably the best episode of Bangladeshi food journey of yours..cause this shows the real homely foods of our everyday life...
I love the guy next to mark. He just cracks up watching mark eat. Wish I was there ! Looks phenomonal
Ohhh the way he is tasting food. Super amazing. Literally you are making us hungry 😅
Mark please don't leave Bangladesh, this series is so heart warming I don't want it to stop :(
Eating all that breakfast with your hands in Asia was a treat Mark, they say be a Roman in Rome, you are exclusive when it comes to food and travel vlogs, awesome treat and a great video, thanks for posting it. Also note, among all the foreigners who make video in India Bangladesh and Pakistan, you are the one who knows how to eat the food the right way with your hands
As a Bangladeshi this is what comes in my mind if someone says "real authentic Bangladeshi food". Hats off to that cute aunty for cooking and representing our food so well. It's so mouthwatering...
hats off to Mark Wiens... never seen any non-Bengali enjoy our food this much, you made me hungry. thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Really great traditional village food in Bangladesh .
