    My guess is that the alcohol wasn't 100% dry when you applied the varnish. When varnish (especially matte) dries too quickly, it creates a cloudy opaqueness. Alcohol dries pretty quickly, so that could be the problem. My friend thought he had ruined his entire army when he spray varnished and used a hair dryer to make it dry faster. Regardless, great tutorial and great save!

    Ok. So this is gonna be a LONG one
    I'm 4 minutes into this video, I used to paint and convert when I was 12/13. I'm now 30. During the last lockdown I purchased 5 space marine kits. I never built one full model. I followed the releases, learnt about indomitus and realised I had missed a great thing so I have bought age of darkness. Realistically, I had no intention of doing anything with it. I was gonna sit on it and sell it in years to come. Investment and all that. To be honest painting has come SO FAR since I used to paint metallics in flesh tones, I always want to be competent at what I do and seeing the quality nowadays is intimidating but this tutorial is making me ITCH to paint that kit.
    And I think I'm going to.

    Thanks for this tutorial, that's an excellent result in 10 hours! I was wondering if the yellow contrast paint was necessary given that the oil wash is, I suppose, going to slightly tint everything in a shade similar to that of the yellow contrast paint. Or is it going to look different without the contrast paint?

    • @ThePaintingCoach
      @ThePaintingCoach  Před 2 lety +1

      I think you'll get a slightly more desaturated yellow without the contrast paint - you'll still need to do the gloss stage as the primer is very matte and will stop the oil flowing into the recesses

    • @ericlang7408
      @ericlang7408 Před 2 lety

      @@ThePaintingCoach thanks for the explanation. I didn't realised that the gloss varnish was required for the wash to flow nicely! Thanks for the tip! I suppose you have to use a gloss or satin varnish as a matt one might also prevent a nice flow of the wash 🤔

    • @ThePaintingCoach
      @ThePaintingCoach  Před 2 lety +1

    Nice tutorial. Regarding the varnish, based on how much of the gloss varnish you applied to fix the issue I would assume you used that much matte varnish as well. I believe you are applying too much varnish at one time. Your best results will be through an airbrush but if you are brushing it on it should be more clear and not have the milky consistency that appeared in the video. So I would either thinner more or apply less and do multiple coats.

    If the pointed end of the MK6's beak helmet is cut off, can it be used as a MK7 helmet?

      No I don't think that would work without a lot of resculpting

    Varnish need to dry under a hot lamp. So you have no frosting

    Does anyone know of a spray/rattle can the color of/or similar to Sons of Horus Green? Would like to use this painting method on a SoH army

    I wonder what caused the varnish to frost. Makes me scared to varnish 😬

      Never had it this bad before - i think the oil layer was still reactive

    Still wild to me that you don’t use any handle while painting

    • @ThePaintingCoach
      @ThePaintingCoach  Před 2 lety

      Haha I do normally - I use a Redgrass Games handle - for these I was lazy and couldn't be bothered changing for every model as I was focused on speed

      @@ThePaintingCoach Fair fair! I have the Redgrass one, but I prefer the Ferox Fabrication one (he's a local Canadian so I like supporting him) but I IMMENSELY prefer his magnet puck system to the peg system the old Regrass ones have.

    I LOVE your thinking. However, i would never paint on a varnish. Cans and airbrushes make it too easy, and without the errors you ran into. Obviously, you know this, but your audience should be aware that spray varnishes are king in the speed paint world.

    • @ThePaintingCoach
      @ThePaintingCoach  Před 2 lety

      Yes and a can saved it - I tried to do the whole thing 'no airbrush' to make it as accesible as possible - and we got a nice accidental learning point 🤣
