    I have an army of Firstborn Imperial Fists still waiting to be painted, but I wanted them to look battle-hardened and like they've been fighting in muck and grime for the last decade without reinforcements. I was too afraid to start, but I really like how you did that Imperial Fist model, so I'm definitely going to try and follow the steps in this video. It's been extremely helpful to watch. Thank you!

      If you want to speed up the process use an oil wash instead of the Garaghaks Sewer contrast (3/4 raw sienna + 1/4 black semi transparent and add 2x the amount of mineral spirit) and you clean the wash after 8-6h with mineral spirit on cotton swab. Then let it dry 24-48h. And just some edge lightning to finish.

  • @orgun
    @orgun Před 2 lety +8

    New Contrast paints look really cool. Please just use Streaking Grime or a burnt umber oil wash if you want to get a result like the Garaghak's Sewer wash though, there's much less danger of ruining your model because it dried too fast or left tide marks.

    I was about to follow the latest GW guide but might hold out for this new contrast paint. I’ve already got a can of Zandri dust for the base, will this still be worth using? I do like a darker finish if that’s the effect it will have.

    I'm still torn on this. Why not just use a yellow ink?

    • @Volcodom
      @Volcodom Před 2 lety +7

      Contrast has been a niche use case in my arsenal. One hundred percent yellow azo ink with a little matte varnish will get you here over a based brown with a few passes of white ink and brown and then white ink and at half the price. For a whole army box having a perfect color right there is attractive if you're color matching, and a few of the contrast paints are super good for stuff like starting skin with verdaccio (Marco taught that using plaguebearers flesh) or some of the browns make a really good start and glaze for nmm gold. But it's all up to what a painter like. I'm in the inks category with you but if I was gonna do a whole space marine thing I'd probably grab a bottle of contrast to airbrush with them for ease of setting up the sketch on everything.

    • @bGRmn
      @bGRmn Před 2 lety

      Agreed. The yellow looks too similar to a base common yellow for it to be worth the price. Also; I fell like It's just too "situational" to be worth using by itself.

    Your pot lids are caking up on the inside of the rim preventing them from sealing up. I use a broken dental pick to remove the caked paint from the inside of the lid’s ring thus allowing the pot to be properly sealed up.

  • @sendoprey

    It would have been great if you could have made a video on how the majority of people will be using this paint. The purpose of contrast paint is for beginners who probably dont have access to an airbrush etc. Doing a video with just a white undercoat would have been a lot more informative for people deciding whether or not to use this paint.

    Protip: make a nice wash with spirits and burnt umber oil paint, slather it everywhere and then after it's well dry, take some makeup sponges dipped lightly in spirits and just wipe off the wash, comes off clean leaving a nice yellow under without removing the nice sunk in wash from the crevices, works even better if you use gloss varnish on the model before washing and wiping. You'll find the wash actually flows much better over varnish too! Saves a mint on spirits to boot

  • @petersaczko6192
    @petersaczko6192 Před 2 lety

    Darker colours that move closer to black tend not to be transparent because black is the absence of light or colour. The washes like Nuln Oil tend to be very thin in pigment density in order to not obscure detail and maintain the vibrancy of the colour they are painted over.

    For me, the worst part of making mistakes is the cost of paint...
    Other than the damage inflicted on your wallet, there isn't a mistake that can't be undone when it comes to painting. So don't let yourself be discouraged by your shortcomings. Failure is the best teacher!
